Energy 101: Wind Power

Ғылым және технология

See how wind turbines generate clean electricity from the power of wind. The video highlights the basic principles at work in wind turbines, and illustrates how the various components work to capture and convert wind energy to electricity. This updated version also includes information on the Energy Department's efforts to advance offshore wind power. Offshore wind energy footage courtesy of Vestas.

First a wind turbine blade works sorta like an airplane wing. Blowing air passes around both sides of the blade. The shape of the blade causes the air pressure to be uneven - higher on one side of the blade and lower on the other. And that's what makes it spin...the uneven pressure causes the blades to spin around the center of the turbine. (I was typing out this part out for my report, and I decided to comment it)

These systems only produce electricity at about 35% efficiency. A spiral shaped wind catcher turbine... of the same height... can produce power at 95% efficiency. They are also smaller, can be packed into a MUCH smaller area, are lighter, cost less, and can stand up to hurricane force winds. These turbines must be shut down if a wind over 50 miles per hour hits them or be damaged by spinning too fast. Spiral column turbines... the faster the wind, the more energy they can produce. The propeller design takes a MINIMUM wind speed of 15 mph to even get MOVING... spiral column... a breeze at only 1/2 mph can get them moving and producing power. Corporate and political greed keeps the systems from going mainstream.

Do the math here. How much energy is made from a windmill to how much is lost to parasitic loss. How much energy is lost to bring that energy to your community. These don't work in cold weather. Define clean energy? This is about bringing the carbon footprint down right? How much carbon is used to make one of these windmills?? Reliable until there is a snow storm right guys??? LMAO

Wind turbines aren't ugly, just like the windmills in Holland aren't ugly. Rather, they are a tourist attraction. And they certainly don't look worse than coal mining.
