Endless ALBANIAN FOOD TOUR of Little Italy in the Bronx, NYC!!

🧳 NICK: / breadsaltandhearth
🧳 TASOS: / agreeksolo
✈️ CHECK OUT MY TRAVEL BLOG: davidsbeenhere.com/
Of course, with a whole week to explore New York City’s diverse food scene, I had to go for some Balkan food at some point! Come with me as I go on a wild Albanian food tour of the Bronx!
I started my Albanian food adventure in the Albanian corner of the Little Italy neighborhood in the Brox with my friend Nick from Bread, Salt, and Hearth. He’d be taking me around to four of his favorite spots!
🇦🇱 DEA - AN AUTHENTIC EATERY: / deaeatery
🇦🇱 ÇAKOR RESTAURANT: / cakorrestaurant
🇦🇱 ÇKA KA QELLU: / ckakaqellu
🇦🇱 NO FORK: / nofork21
We began at Déa, an authentic Albanian eatery that sells favorites like burek. Their burek has a double layer of dough, and they make them into round shapes and rolls.
We got cheese burek, beef burek, and spinach-leek burek. The cheese one was crumbly and had so many crispy and soft layers. We also had some coffee and a bitter but creamy yogurt drink called ayran.
The beef one was filled with a generous amount of meat, and the spinach-leek was savory and sweet because of the leeks and caramelized onions! The spinach and leek was my favorite!
Next, we headed to Çakor, where they’d make us a ton of traditional Albanian and Italian dishes: baby lamb with potatoes, qebap and sujuk, kaymak, roasted peppers, cheese, white bean soup, veal goulash, Stone Castle red wine, cordon bleu, veal polombo, and lepinja (Balkan flatbread).
The lepinja pairs with everything! I loved it with the smoky qebap and kaymak. The funky, blue cheese-like flavor of the kaymak added a nice kick of flavor. The veal goulash was hearty and tender and came in a light, flavorful gravy. It’s the perfect winter dish!
Next was the baby lamb had crispy skin but was still juicy. Next, I jumped on the pite, or Albanian cornbread. It was similar to South American savory cornbread. The cabernet was incredible, too!
The white bean soup was hearty and comforting! Then, we jumped on the baklava and moist and crumbly sheqepare (a shortbread like snack doused in sugar syrup) for dessert!
Then, Nick had to leave, but we continued t0 Çka Ka Qellu, a restaurant with rustic decor made to look like a traditional, 19th-century Albanian home or tavern.
After toasting with some raki, we jumped on some fli, or flija, which is a savory layered crepe dish. We also had burek, cheese and peppers, salad, tavas, and more. We also had a small, crispy dumpling containing veal called mantia.
The fli contained six cheeses and was super filling and carb-heavy, and next level! I loved the herbs. Then, we had a cornbread with herbs called leçenik, which contains cheese and has kaymak on top. It was great with the smoky ajvar (red pepper paste)!
Next was the lepinja (flatbread) with the cheesy sujuk dip and cheese pickled pepper. These dishes were so comforting! They’re true Albanian soul food.
Next were the entrees: mantia tava, peppers stuffed with rice and veal, liver tava. The liver tava was my favorite dish there, while the mantia tava was also excellent!
Then, I saw them make Skenderbeg (a breaded & fried roll of smoked meat stuffed with cheese, spices, and covered in a white sauce). It’s named after the Albanian national hero!
The Skenderbeg was like the ultimate schnitzel! It was gooey, cheesy, and perfectly cooked. I loved the crispness and tenderness. They treated us like family!
Then, Tasos and I headed to No Fork, a Kosovar sandwich shop that sells open-face sandwiches, pizzas, and more! Their No Forks Given sandwich was full of meaty prosciutto, oregano, and gooey cheese! It was so good!

Shesherepare = Shakarpare? Fascinating to see how cultures are connected across the world. Shakarpare is Indian sweet with same making looks different.
