I grew up in Vestal, NY. I was trying to remember Washington Ave and this helped. This street in the 1970/80’s was amazing. IBM employees would all be walking on their lunch hours. Broome County was magical to grow up in during that time!

Thanks for posting this as pics we had back then are lost. I lived right across from lyric theater. And a few places on the ave. Bought my guitar at the music workshop.

So many happy memories shopping on Washington Ave. I used to love buying the Tulip Sundaes at J.J. Newburys at eating them at the lunch counter as a kid 35 cents each as I recall. Also remember waiting at the bus stop in front of Marine Midland Bank and riding the bus back home to End Well. So many happy memories of E.J. Park too, the water in that pool at the park was always so cold, and who can forget the carousels!!!! No one could have immortalized it better then Rod Serling in that famous " Twilight Zone" episode "Walking Distance"...😁😁😁😁

@@gregorycyr9272 IBM Headquarters are currently abandoned, as well as the local Kmart as well as several shops on Washington Ave, North Street and East Main street. On East Main Street, there's a vacant Friendlys and Pizza Hut sitting side by side next to each other. The Endicott airport has a few abandoned buildings as well as the EJ factories over near glendale I think. It's rather depressing. If you're an Urbex exploration person, I highly recommend Broome County. You'd find a lot of cool abandoned places.

Great slide show! The Inn on the Ave. used to have the best steak sandwiches ever. Also, Pancho's pit was a great addition. I remember my dad taking us down to watch the various parades, and I swear that I saw some Spanish-American war vets back in the early 60's. Sad to see the decline. It wasn't just IBM and EJ leaving; the passing of Mrs. Norton was a big factor also. Also the Hideaway closing. But does anyone else remember the smell of leather in the mornings? Started school at George H. Nichols, moved to Endwell and Homer Brink. That's a big part of my youth.

love it. taken during when this area was still great. and had so many different industries. it's amazing there are half as many people in the area now then at peak population. some of the pictures takes me back even being an 80's child going to EJ's shoe shop on washington.

Burt's had shopping bags that looked like large peppermint candies (red and white stripes) with plastic handles that snapped together. They could be repurposed for years. Good times, good times.

It would be cool to have the dates on the pictures so we can associate a time period with them :) Curious to know how long it took to build the area up and then the quick decline to it's now very poor state.

+Kathryn Dimock Are you one of the EMT's who repeatedly parts their ambulance across from dunkin in front of the NO PARKING SIGN ? Even after repeatedly being asked not to park illegally there..where every day i watch kids almost get hit because they run around and dont see cars coming down the street? Im guessing probably yes seeings your holding a dunkin cup in your profile pic.

I think the village hit its peak in the early 1960s, then slowly went downhill from there. The decline accelerated after 1980 or so. And I know. I was there.
