That passage is not describing the rapture as popularly conceived. In that passage, Christians meet Christ in the heavens and then come back to earth with him immediately after meeting him in the sky to reign on earth. This understanding is based on the Greek text and cultural realities of visiting dignitaries. In Thessalonians, there is no abiding in heaven during a theoretical tribulation. This text is not referring to the rapture most evangelicals currently conceive of.
