    The important thing with this type of drive is to replace them if there’s any signs of wear on some of the numbers because it’s quite easy then to guess the code

    The cost is an issue. I would have no problem if they cost 100 pounds/euros more than a non secure drive. BUT, at least the SSDs I checked, the price increase is crazy per capacity level. I am guessing the encryption hardware/software used doesn't physically change as you upgrade size, yet the price of the encrypted drives is far more than what you would pay for any other drive + the cost for the specialized hardware.

    I would imagine these devices just simply use the self-encrypting function of the drive itself so it doesn't matter if it's an SSD or a hard drive as long as it's got built-in self encryption you should be fine not that they are completely hack proof because these hardware based hard drives or ssds they've recently found if you can get physical access to the drive there is a possibility that you could actually unlock the drive without a valid code Best way would be use bit locker as long as both PCs are using Windows 10 your fine (possibly Windows 10 pro only) just from checking it seems that as long as you encrypt the external drive using Windows 10 pro you can then access it using Windows 10 home I'm not getting a clean answer if Windows 10 home can actually save any data on a bitlocker external drive that's been unlocked

    I rather penetrate myself with a dead cactus dipped in tabasco, than use as a main OS Windows 10 Big Brother Edition. Thank you for the rest of your reply though.

    @@Trusteft it can be whatever encryption method you want like veracrypt it's not really that difficult it's just it's very likely and normal person or company will be using Windows 10/8/7 on the client sides (the issue is having the right version of Windows that supports it if not veracrypt works perfectly fine)

    Is there a way to physically get into the drives (specifically with being able to get to the platters on the hard drives)?

    The drives are epoxied in their housing so you'd have a pretty tough time. You likely could with enough effort, but then you'd still have to access the data then unencrypt it.

    Is the cable removable or hardwired into the device. It would be a shame for that flimsy cable attached to such an expensive device to be damaged. Rendering the entire thing useless.

    Suggestion just buy a external hdd/ssd, and then just encrypt it using software like disk utility on os x or cryptsetup on linux

  • @TechteamGB

    @TechteamGB

    Yes but doesn't easily work with any device, not hardware encryption and can be brute forced. Also ease/convenience for no tech savvy users... You are still right though it's a great cheaper option for techies.

    TechteamGB true my solution isn’t portable nor does it have the cool secure deletion. But it is open source so we can actually guarantee security whereas with that black box it is slightly more difficult

    @@MacbookCore you could always use this blackbox plus software encryption (anyway using bitlocker with an normal external hdd works as well not sure there is much techy about it you right click on drive and turn on bitlocker)
