Just received a starter enamel kit for Christmas, your video was a great look into different ways to use the enamel. I have several questions though. 1. my kit has a holding agent. Is that the same as the Klyr fire? 2. You said to move the piece to a warm surface. Would a candle warmer be appropriate or would that be too hot? I just discovered your videos and am looking forward to checking out more. Thank you for the great information!

Hi Hope, You're going to get hooked on enameling faster than you think. It's so much fun. I suspect that the holding agent in the kit is something very similar to klyr fire. If the makers of the kit included it, it must be a similar product if not klyr fire just repackaged with their label. A coffee warmer sounds like a good place to try out to dry your enamel project. I often place my projects, on the furnishing that I'll fire them on, under a heat lamp. Just be sure you can move them off of the warmer without messing up the unfired enamel. And, be sure to read the book that I assume came with the kit. Have fun. Thanks for your support! : )

Patricia Johnson Thank you for the kind words Patricia. I have never worked with ceramic paints. But, I'll bet that they have potential for use with your enamel projects. My best guess is that they are probably a lot like enameling paints. The trick to using those is that you have to make sure that they are completely dry before you fire them onto an enameled surface. Then, you need to fire a clear enamel material over them. My advice is to experiment with them and see what they can an cannot do for you before applying them to a special project. Good luck! There are liquid enamels as well as watercolor enamels. But they both produce results that are very different from powdered enamels. 😀

Hi Jenna, I used a small MAPP gas torch from the hardware store. MAPP gas is kind of dirty. But, it's cheap and hot kinda like me ; ) Thanks for your support! : )

Would it be possible to enamel one side of a piece, and then enamel the opposing side? I mean, the enamel wouldn't melt or burn or something I'd imagine, if that second piece can be compared to this scenario right?

It is possible to enamel on both sides of a piece. Enamelists who fire their pieces in a kiln normally "counter enamel" or enamel the back side of a piece. This helps to control the surface tension on a piece so that the enamel does not crack. The enamel used on the back side of a piece, however, is generally not as pretty as the enamel used on the front side of a piece. Counter enameling using a torch fired method is tricky. That's why the torch fired pieces shown on the OJA are done on thick gauge sheet and only fired on the top surface. Have fun exploring enameling. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi John, Can you tell me what the difference is, if any, between wet packing and painting with enamel. I see there is enamel for painting, but have never seen anything showing how to do it. thanks.

Hi Jill, Wet packing is when you fill cloisonné with enamel using a binder like Klyr Fire. There are a variety of enamel products that one can "paint" with on a surface. The term enamel painting, however, generally refers to the application of enamel to a glass or ceramic surface. I hope this helps. Thanks for your support! : )

Diane Reed If the metal body is thick enough, you don't need to counter enamel. The examples in the video are made from 20 gauge sheet metal. Thanks for watching! : )

Enameling operations on 18k gold are very similar to those performed on copper, silver and other karat types. I recommend that you visit the Thompson Enamel website for information on their products and how to use them. You should also consult with an enamelist in your area for training. +amin karimi You're very welcome Amin. The Freywille pieces that I looked at appear to be produced through the use of enamel decals. These are the same kind of decals that are used by ceramic companies to mass produce commemorative plates and mugs. You can buy them from a ceramic supply company. I have tons of them. They are really fun to cut up and piece together into new designs. The end result sort of looks like an Italian micro mosaic. Try it out. Thanks for watching! : )
