Employees first, customers second | Vineet Nayar | TEDxAix

"Millions of employees walk through our organizations every day not just to get paid but to be inspired by the vision we have for them", says Vineet Nayar, former CEO of HCL Technologies and author of Harvard Business Press bestseller "Employees First, Customers Second" (EFCS) giving a compelling account of how this idea channelized the energy and passion of 100,000 employees to increase HCL's revenues and market cap over six times!
In this must watch 18 minute video Vineet shares at least 8 simple ideas that can do wonders to your Employee Engagement scores and ensure happiness, passion and growth. Not surprisingly Vineet's EFCS philosophy and its execution at HCLT has been described as the "world's most modern management" by Fortune and got him a place in the magazine's first ever Fortune Global Dream-team alongside stalwarts like Steve Jobs.
Vineet Nayar is the former CEO of HCL Technologies, founder of the Sampark Foundation and author of a book that is considered as a revolution in management, Employees First, Customers Second. He not only states simple philosophical principles but also applies them successfully: his company has succeeded the challenge of tripling its turnover ($4.2 billions today). Vineet Nayar has been elected best employer in Asia. His very simple idea of « management by trust » through challenging conventional management practices, was described by the American Fortune magazine as “the most modern management in the world”.He later created his charitable organization Sampark (“to be in contact” in Hindi), focused on the training of teachers. He is thus considered as the man who is resolving India’s problems. Indeed, in a country where tens of millions of children are dropping out of school, Vineet Nayar explains that he wants to “have an impact on millions of lives”.

I joined HCL Technologies in year 2010 when Vineet was the CEO. What made me his fan was his enthralling speeches, employees centric approach and his sheer personailty. He used to address all 89000 employees every year!, asking their problems and then giving answers to them. He is a perfect mentor. I am still at HCL and try to teach same values to my team. Watch this video and you will understand each and every word of my comment :)

Good evening Sir !!! Its being 3 yrs i have been longing to meet you... I have read your words and watched your Video on EFCS and i find it quite inspirational, confident and full of faith. I consider both verbal and non-verbal words of yours highly valuable and challenging. For instance you spoke of the "Challenge for any leader" "The challenge for any leader is to create a workplace that stimulates creativity and innovative thinking. Vineet speaks from very rich experience that has allowed him to create environments that encourage people to venture into the gap that separates the ordinary from the extraordinary, and encourages people to make what seems impossible- possible". And whatever you spoke about EFCS is all correct and revolutionary, but not every manager & leader in HCL is following the vision you sought for HCLites. Not all managers & HR's are into business of Encouraging, inspiring, Enthusing and giving the employees a freedom for thoughts..for innovative ideas..inspite of this some of them are into the business of humiliating and suppressing the challenging and unique employees...some of such employees are overloaded by stress and frustration due to Managers & HR's behavior as they don't keep faith in their employees and their challenging work...and then they conspire and flush the Challenging vision of an ordinary employee out of the organisation.."No matter what will be the mental state of highly challenging up growing youth who dreams to be the Real HCLites". Sir you talked about 360 degree survey..its good..but it wasn't open to every employee of HCL...HR's used to come for this survey..and it was up to them to " whom they wish to circulate it" and even there was 1 to 1 sessions with HR's which were not meant for employee who aspires to walk extra-miles.... My experience with HCL was drastic, though I had dreamt of making my dreams come true being an employee of HCL Comnet system & services ltd.sector-16 noida....but EFCS doesn't worked for me...and i was into big mental loss due to less wisdom of self-purposed..self-visioned Managers and HR's.........nmrk nmrk nmrk

I worked at HCL for a few years, and oberved them specializing primarily in BS, Propaganda, and Appearance, *not* substance. On American soil, very few Americans had the slightest chance of advancment. It was the rule, not the exception, to bring H1B workers to do jobs that Americans could've done better. Their imported workers had little choice but to check check their email, answer cell phone, and login to perform work after hours, and on weekends, and had little choice but to completely tolerate constant insult, disprespect, and condescencion, or be shipped back home. At least American workers can quit, and go work elsewhere. American companies that contract HCL guilty of creating a harsh work environment, and sending American money overseas. Oh by the way, sometimes HCL goes through staffing companies, when hiring American workers, and sometimes those staffing companies are also headquartered offshore.

Also the HCL managers lied constantly, to anyone, if it suited their purpose, and if they could get away with it, whether they be the customer, employees, or supervisors. I was always careful to protect customer's data, when swapping hard drives, even when the drive could not be read. The only time a customer asked for the bad hard drive, to take to a data recovery service, just so happened to be about the only time I ever lost track of the drive. I asked my manager what to do, and he handed me a random hard drive, and said, "here, tell them this is it". That's not an earth-shattering event, and probably not rare. I'm just sayin', not only did it happen, but that is absolutely representative of the culture of HCL.

Aaaand, furthermore... Just so you know, I'm understating the issue. If you are in a position to decided whether or not to go with HCL, especially if you're company isn't located in India, then don't lie to yourself, and tell yourself that I'm just trolling. Just know to what extent you're selling out the workers of your own country, and exporting wealth from your country, and doing business with what may possibly be utter, and complete lowlifes, and incredibly dishonest. I can't know that HCL leadership won't have changed their ways, by the time you read this. Just sayin'.

Mary J Hayes why did you ask your manager what to do? Did you in fact hand that random drive to the customer, or did you come clean and admit you lost track of it? So maybe the manager was trying to save you from being fired? Who knows?
