The capital was moved to Constantinople because it was in a more strategic location. Militarily it had a natural sea barrier which prevented it from getting invaded on multiple occasions. And it was a better place economically and administratively in running the empire. In addition, Rome was still recognised as the spiritual capital of the Empire and remained significant until its fall.

As a Norwegian i cannot comprehend that my ancestors raided Paris , Constantinopel and all in between for 300 years.. I mean we where peasants and lumberjacks with axes and sword .. And the word Viking only means traveller.. Its insane, but i guess when famine and low on resources hit its good to be tall and good with an axe to be a rapist criminal ..

The Romans have all the reasons to be confident. 2000 years of continuous ruling over a sizeable portion of the world can give to you that kind of confidence. And moving the capital to Constantinople was correct. Hence why the empire still lasted for centuries there while the western empire fell.

Isn't it interesting how rabid atheists claim the Catholic Church led the West into the Dark Ages, while actual history shows the West was slowly crumbl9ng for centuries. If anything, the Church kept the West going. I'm a total agnostoc btw, just in case you think I'm defending Christianity in any way. I'm not. I'm just interested in the facts as I can get them. @@connorgrimshaw5457 but the Byzantine empire is different than the Roman Republic turned Roman Empire. Different traditions, military and political structure. The Roman Empire is generally considered by most historians to have fallen in 476 AD when Odoacer sinks his sword into the throne of the Roman emperor and declares himself King of Italy. The Byzantines were a surviving offshoot of Rome but they were far from Roman in anything other than name only. Completely different culture, political influences, different societal norms. That would be like saying Alexander’s empire lasted 300+ years because the Seleucid Empire and ptolomeic kingdom lasted til 63 BC and 30 BC. In reality, Alexander’s empire was split up by 321 BC, 2 years after his death.

He does realise that the Roman Empire was in essence divided into two sections as it was to large to govern, you had western Roman Empire with Rome as the capital and eastern rome or also known as the Byzantine Greek empire which had Constantinople as its capital. Western being catholic and eastern being orthodox. This guy is the epitome of knowing a little about a lot but talking as though he knows alot about alot

  • @odlfmariner470

It's actually incredible how wrong you are in your very confident assertions, and it's funny because you say that this guy knows very little about what he's talking about, but look at yourself before you start judging others. First of all, Rome was never the capital in the Western Roman Empire, the capital of West Rome was Ravenna, not Rome itself. Secondly, you say that West Rome was "catholic" and East Rome was "orthodox", when in reality there was no such thing as Catholic Christianity or Orthodox Christianity back when the Western Roman Empire actually existed. The great Schism happened over 500 years after Western Rome fell, both East Rome and West Rome followed the same Christianity before West Rome fell (Nicene/Chalcedonian). West Rome was never Catholic, and East Rome was not Orthodox when both Empires existed.

As a Spaniard I can give a little insight into this topic, although I'm in no way an historian. About "ALL" the gold: The mining methods during the time Spain controlled the American colonies were EXTREMELLY primitive compared to what we have now. I don't remember the number but there was some comparison that went something like "the equivalent of all the gold and silver that Spain took from the americas is mined in just 2 years nowadays". Its probably more or less time but it was something like that, just to give context to how slow and basic surface mining was at the time, without any of the advanced machinery of nowadays. Also it is true that the gold and silver was spent and left spain almost as soon as it got in, but inflation also plays a part, as Spain was bringing so much new silver to Europe that the value went down. Spanish coinage was so universal that they were found almost annywhere in the globe and were the de-facto global currency, to the point that USA used Spanish coinage for many decades after independence, and pegged the dollar value to the "Spanish dollar" for many years.

3:02. A number of Roman writers understood very well the revolution of empires. An extract from Seneca, the Roman philosopher: “Ancient empires have fallen when in the very heyday of their power. The number cannot be reckoned of the kingdoms that have been overthrown by other kingdoms. God now makes it His special aim to exalt some and to overthrow others; nor does He let them gently down, but dashes them from their pinnacle, so that no remnant of them is left.” (Natural Questions. 3.8-9)

In regards to Spain you totally didn’t even mention Portugal which was forced out the moors and became a sovereign nation and huge empire themselves, in fact Spain had to steal some of Portugal’s sailors because they were superior to the Spanish (Columbus was first employed by the Portuguese, also Fernando Magalhães aka Ferdinand Magellan was Portuguese and sailed for Spain. Also the Arabs didn’t just colonize Morocco they colonized all of Northern Africa and many countries in the Middle East that prior to Arab arrival were not Islamic nations

It is also good to mention the lesser known aspects of history: such as how quickly societies rise and fall but also how some groups are not as often criticized for their history like the Arabs; when it comes to their own invasions of Europe (Spain/Iberia), and their slave trade.

I read a statistic that claimed that Spain mined from its colonies in 3 centuries almost the same amount of gold that nowadays Peru mines in a single year, so they didn't take all the gold from America. Most of that gold was spent on wars in central Europe (which was part of its empire) to fight Protestantism. Another great part of its gold was spent battling separatist revolutions in America and Asia, as well as fighting against the US in Cuba and the Philippines. The Royal Navy did little harm to the Spanish Armada, most of the Armada's ships were sunk by bad weather. It was most probably the other way round, a Spanish commander, Blas de Lezo, literally single-handly (he only had one arm, and also missed a leg and an eye) defeated a whole British fleet at Cartagena de Indias. The biggest threat to Spain from Britain was the British Freemasonry, which conspired with separatists to spark revolutions in the Spanish colonies (i.e. Simón Bolívar, the idol of the Marxist Southamerican dictators, was their useful idiot). The little gold that remained was lost in the Spanish 1936 Civil War when the Communist Revolutionist Government stole all the national reserves before retreating from the capital, Madrid. The commies gave all the gold to their sponsor, the Soviet Union, but they surely pocketed some of it themselves because they lived some pretty fancy lives in exile.

He was a dynasty man who sunk the wealth of Iberia into expanding his family's domains. These aristocrats happily slaughtered Spanish people rebelling against taxation whilst handing over Iberian money to loyalist Germans and Italians.

The capital of Rome was moved to Constantinople (Istanbul) since it was much wealthier at that time. If you look on the map it was the land bridge between Asia and Europe. Centuries before it was given to Marc Anthony to rule during the second triumvirate which included himself, Caesar Augustus who held Spain and Gaul, and Marcus Lepidus who held onto Northern Africa. All three collectively ruling over Italy/Rome. Augustus and Agrippa quickly dispatched Lepidus and took over control of his area. Leaving Marc Anthony in the East drinking and boning his life away with Cleopatra until they both died. Augustus ruling the entirety of the Roman Empire from there on. "I found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble" - Augustus Caesar

Before the world might as well be run through those whose agenda it was to make conquering a point. Now, whether you are a conquerer or not, you know the agendas of every empire. People are beginning to think for themselves. This was not possible in the past. So the future is kind of in the air as far as who maintains power and for how long. We are living in a time unlike any other time in the past. The internet and this access to information changes everything.

Unless you literally get invaded and conquered nobody is going to collapse anymore. Especially not the huge economies. They would drag everyone down with them so the world would cancel debts, etc. Culturally you can have major upheavals and enter a malaise period but things move too quickly these days for it to last as long as it might have hundreds of years ago.

People have always "thought for themselves", but for most people, the only things they ever think about are the issues in their immediate existence. Sustenance, income, employment, etc. They neither grasp nor care to discover the larger issues that face humanity as a whole. Those who will maintain power will be, just as they were in the past, those who understand and are willing to manipulate other people for their own advantage, whatever the cost may be to those whom they manipulate.

Spain could've Reconquista'd much earlier, like when Castile first started to regain territory like Córdoba 250 years beforehand. But they left Granada because inter-Christian conflict got in the way of a unified front and they totally ignored it to the point where the Castile crown didn't even ask for reparations from Granada for raids into Castile.

There was no Spain until the reconquista. Shows what you know. The Iberian peninsula was a patchwork of small Christian kingdoms and a few Islamic states. Ferdinand and Isabella were each king and queen of separate, neighboring kingdoms - Castile and Aragon. They married, and that marriage gave them the resources to fulfill their vision of evicting the moors.

I am studying this era now. Martin Luther and Erasmus had conversations that were very interesting. He's talking about the Damascus story and how Spain formed to be tolerant of three religions. There were Jews, Arabs and Christians living side by side. They were the big example to the world for a long time. They set a standard during the Italian Renaissance and when the printing press came all of Christendom got a bible book to read. Humanity became literate and were competing immediately about who was more literate. This is when man evolved big time and we don't explore this history enough. It was just as big of a jump into evolution as I can think of. Printing Press was bigger than the computer. The English Revolution and John Milton's "The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates" is the most fascinating historical event. That is the main force of my scholarship, John Milton. The Protestant Reformation is so important to understand before you know the English Revolution. England was all Catholic until Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries. It was an administrative process that happened between 1536-1541. People should know Luther and Erasmus because we all became literate after this. That describes this time period in basic form. I loose myself for whole weekends doing this with resource materials at JSTOR.
