Lots of friendly fire though, of your 291 losses, 90 were friendly fire. Without the high ground you would be shooting your own men in the back even more.

Allowing enemy cavalry to wipe your artillery from the back was unacceptable.

Tactic works amazing until your enemy realizes attacks are not going to end well and goes for your art/ brings riflemen to match your riflemen

I do a traditional gettysburg L-shape strategy. Line rifleman in an L-shape about a quarter of a mile long. Place artillery on the opening adjacent to the stem, and then place around 2 to 4 companys of calvary at the top to take out any retreating forces....works like a charm...they move right into it.

Did a defense with this tactic using 3 companies of 2chev english Militia in Campaign vs 4 Line Inf of frogs, slightly better KDR at 1:3, had to get in close for the shots to be effective (got murderous when the frogs started to form at my flanks, lots of micro). Gonna see if some canister shot sweetens the pot. Thx for the vid!

Nice strategy! I have one for defeating defending armies in line formation.

Beautiful use of light infantry! This strategy does remind me of what the duke of wellington did at the battle of Waterloo, perhaps he was your inspiration? Also, a mortar or a howlitzer with explosive ammo would have destroyed the enemy during the last half of the battle. They were crushed together because of your scissor move, and a single payload of explosive shells would have broken them.

okay first off this guy sounds like a speech impaired homeless man. Then he got all of his cavalry killed within the first minute of any fighting. He also reacts really slowly

Well designed tactic, presuming you can get them to advance on your line instead of waiting for your advance, which is especially difficult when you put your cannons so far behind your point of first contact. And March4th is right-you need to take much more careful care of your lines of fire-you lost something like 10-20% of your right light infantry line because you failed to order the second line to hold fire until they were out of the way. :P

hold the right mouse button in the area you want to set your units, a small green arrow will appear showing your troop formation and direction they are facing, just drag the mouse while hold down the right mouse button to change the unit direction and formation.

Nice Strategy

I used this tactic in most of my battles - no matter if I was outnumbered or not. You need to maximize the effect of all of your units. Many of my battles where matched as heroic. Loosing not a lot soldiers and a massacre of the enemies. Very good.

+AS91ist i assume all of your battles were against braindead AI? this won't work against a human player i think

The main strategy i usually do is send my main forces straight torwards them while i send skirmishers/light infantry to the sides for flanking backed with either a spare line inf or cavalry. Either that or i focus all my effort on one side while keeping them occupied with the other side with skirmishers/light to harras them.

this is the defense that general buford used here at gettysburg. and it worked.

against unskilled ppl this tactics would work =D nice vid... btw =D

@Qurion2 yeah, there's the problem I was talking about. Since you're on the verge of economic collapse (don't worry, I was too) you're often helplessly outnumbered. Almost all the battles I fought I was outnumbered like 2 to 1 and sometimes 3 or 4 to 1.

@Qurion2 sounds bloody and fun. To be perfectly honest I haven't had an MP fight yet :( but I'd love to try it sometime.

what i normally do in any battle is find a hill and defend it because even if your Attacking the enemy will come against u. i normally have 3 or 4 line infantry together so they can help eachothr but one thiing not to do is charge an enemy line of militia for hand to hand i learnt the hard way. the reason u shudnt is because there innacurracy acctualli helps them at close range

@Qurion2 audeste was demonstrating a strategy for when you are heavily outnumbered. You get identical funds as your opponents in MP, so you wouldn't use this strategy in MP anyway. You'd only use this strategy in SP when fighting against bad odds.

if i was outnumbered and consisted of almost exclusively infantry (i play ETW with units almost entirely consisted of infantry) i'd use this tactic - form all infantry on the center or on higher ground, fire two volleys or the three volleys afforded by rank firing, then skewer the enemy with everything i have - focusing on one specific unit to charge... that way the enemy won't be able to use all its guns and at the same time breaking their lines.... that's just me. =)

@Qurion2 if you think the AI is too easy, try playing the prussia campaign on H/H. I only declared war on Saxony and by 1715, poland, courland, austria, britain, france, spain, hannover, bavaria, sweden, denmark, and others were at war with me. They invaded me once per two turns. I lasted till 1730 until I simply ran out of resources with which to fight the never-ending tide of line infantry.

yeah its easy enough if you can pause and sort it all out. but you'd have to scip some bits. maybe only have on full volly at the beginning. although if you practice enough you could get pretty shifty at deploying the falling line. can't argue it works great if you can pull it off.

I was in multiplayer and I had 6 Winged Hussars vs 4 Line infantry, 3 skirmishers 1 bodyguard and 2 light cavalry. I charged my Winged Hussars head-on no tactic and won, no lie.

It´s a great tactic but in the future; Make sure that there isn´t any friendly fire amongs your troops, especially when you have a smaller army than the enemy. In the video I could see both your line and light infantry get shoot in the back by their fellow soldiers.

@klemenculk1 multiplayer play for empire is unfortunately restricted to combat and not the grand campaign. In order to play online you have to buy the game on steam.

if i was in that situation playing as the the one who outnumbers and get caught in such a trap i wouldn't have stayed there being shot from all sides and getting friendly fire cuz your troops can't deploy properly. It's best to retreat in that case, leaving one or 2 units behind to cover your retreat, then you can work on an other angle.

when i am outnumbered i set up a double line with units in a v poking out of the line it means the enemy have to take out those infantry before they advance but the infantry in the strait line can still attack.

I spent 700$ and I got a really nice Asus gaming laptop. The processing power is pretty weak, like 2.4 Ghz with overclocking, but I have a 9800m graphics card, so it runs fairly smooth at ultra settings.

In my experience, this strategy only works against the AI, as any human player will use cavalry to break the skirmishing thin lines, and masacure the undefended artillery.

@Qurion2 you don't really get outnumbered in MP (unless you heavily upgrade your guys, in which case you would deserve it).

His artillery has canistor shot. The french would have been routed before they got in melee range.

I think that the only way that this strategy works is if you have high ground so your second line of line infantry is shoting over your other units to avoid friendly fire. by the way I am not good in english;)

I once took 400 to140 men and wine with canister decimated themdid something like that for a siege A hole pikemen as bait and 6 line units took900 to my 74 or something relatively close to that

If you have lets say two regiments of line infantry and have one regiment placed in front of the other, can the infantry behind accidently hit the one's who are in front? If you have Fire At Will on an the target is in range for both regiments..

i thought the falling line strategy should of been like line infantry at the very back, light infantry just a little bit further than the line infantry's range and then same thing for the other light infantry group then you start pulling the first light infantry out and same for the next light infantry group to the front of the line infantry

instead of waiting for them to come to you, you got about 2 extra volley off at the cost friendy fire and bad formation. This is really bad. you won due to your artillery, not your anti micro.

You don't really mind the friendly fire? I always take that into consideration before positioning my troops, unless it's on a hill. Then one unit can fire over the top of the one in front.

That doesn't work on more advance players. Since your cannons are locked on the hill tops and the enemy has 7 units of infantry and cavalry advantages,the enemy can launch a quick infantry charge with 4 line-infantry units, the other two concentrates their fire one flank, and then the last one swing to behind of your infantry lines in a nice thin line. The cavalry will be reserved for reinforcement. The key of this strategy is to pin you down with hand-to-hand combat and use number to flank.

Not really, there are many instances in history of larger armies being destroyed piecemeal by smaller forces. Look at the campaigns of Frederick the Great for instance. The goal is to concentrate a superior number of units on an isolated portion of the enemy forces then exploit the breakthrough.

What are the disadvantages when spreading your line infantry so thinly? Except for the vulnerability to charges, that is.

when they are coming pretty close to the main army put them behinde and above your line infan on the hill so they dont hit your line infan. And flank them with your horses when they charge your lines wat they will cus of your canons riping them to shreds , and never sacrifice them like you do at 5:25. works every time for me, and with less casualteys then you. dont wont to brake you down , but why do it like that when you can have less casualteys and inflict more damage on the enemey ?

OMG , no no no. When the enemy has more units then you theyl allways come to you. So wat you do is: put your canons on a hill and your line infantry below them on the hill so your canons have a clear shot. If you have horses put them on the flanks, i nevr make a army without 2 horse units, preferably even 4. then use your light infantry like you do (falling line) cus they can fire further then the enemys line infan.
