Much better than a national big box chain! Something the city desperately needed was a local business instead of a Walmart or target or any other big box retail for that matter. I still think the old Brookdale mall should’ve been left standing and been occupied solely by local business instead of box retailers.

Perfect thing to go into the old Walmart! I hope they do well!🎉

I’ve yet to visit an Asian market in town I truly like. They all have lots of cool stuff I can’t find in regular markets of course. But they almost always … - Smell bad - Contain LOTS of expired product - Sell questionable fresh fish and meat (e.g. liquid seeping onto the trays) - Present product in a haphazard manner - Have inconsistant labelling and pricing - Have dirty floors & dust on shelves - Have fewer staff than they need at checkout I generally have good luck with fresh produce, however. No better or worse than other markets. I wish one of these places would aspire to the same sort of quality standards as, say, Lunds & Byerly’s. I’m sure that means everything would be more expensive. But I’d shop there. Would you? These places also miss opportunities to target people who are new to these ingredients. e.g. How about posting a recipe for laab near the culantro and/or the namtok seasoning? What the hell are we supposed to do with a beef heart? Guide us! I’ll check this place out in a few months when they get settled.

I feel like it’s a hit or miss. The bigger ones tend to have the more problems you list since it’s probably more difficult to manage. Most of the smaller ones are usually better and are priced higher. Of course it’s all due to management also. I notice that small stores like golden lion tend to be good 90% of the time, but certain seasons they do have bad products. It’ll take time for these change. So far, I have notice most of the stores are much better than 5-10 years ago though. Slow but surely..

Viengchan Oriental Market is smaller and I had a great experience the one and only time I was there. There was a market with a very good deli up that way too. Drat. Can’t remember the name of the place. I think they do more business at the deli than they do the rest of the store. Would love to find a place with fresh and reliable laab on the west side of town. Same for banh-mi. Suggestions?
