Empathy Isn’t Complicated | Samuel Magee | TEDxWestMonroe

This talk focuses on empathy in action, and how a little bit can go a long way to changing someone's life. If it only took a $4 bus ticket to change someone’s life forever, would you do it? What if it was $10 and a hot cup of coffee? What if it was as simple as starting a conversation? Inside every person is the powerful life saving gift of empathy. Using his experience as homeless and addicted to heroin, Samuel shows us the powerful life saving effects of empathy in practice. The same practice he's seen time and time again helping people out of the worst circumstances.
When the standards of society and the prejudices in our own minds eliminate the possibility of becoming more empathetic and compassionate, what is lost? Our sense of community? Our responsibilities as fellow humans? Samuel shares the facts and illuminates some of the pitfalls of addiction and homelessness. Empathy can be applied practically and the result of its application is a connection with our fellow man. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It shouldn't be, but sadly, in today's world of social-media catalyzed narcissism, you're probably right.

@@yellowblanka6058 Being an Empath my whole life, I have to agree with u darlin.. However, I have found that there are a greater number of highly empathic individuals today than there were a decade ago, and there are more everyday. That gives me hope for the human race in the future. The majority of us aren't even initially aware of our "abilities" because it's not as talked about as narcissism is. We go through the first part of our lives thinking we're going crazy..lol.. but there are people like Sam here, as well as myself, who choose to educate and speak about Empathy and help others to understand what a gift it truly is.

Sad that there needs to be a Ted talk about empathy...it should be one of the most basic commonalities of being human. Real empathy that is, not "liking" a news story online, but actually talking to, empathizing with and helping your fellow humans in meatspace. Part of the problem is that it seems like most people have self-insulated themselves in their online communities of immediate friends/families/co-workers/hobbies/political affiliation/music interests and don't seem to acknowledge people outside of their social/socio-economic sphere.

There is no substitute for person to person interactions. Also "meatspace".....nice

@@samuelmagee1215 Thanks, though I certainly can't take credit for the term, it seemed applicable here. Part of the problem is the frictionless nature of friending/talking to people online. It's definitely a dual-edge sword, on the one hand the anonymous nature can lower people's guard and make them feel more comfortable with being vulnerable and talking about their problems, on the other hand it gives the worst elements of society some measure of anonymity to vent their vitriol on strangers. I hope you and yours are doing well and have a happy, healthy holiday season man.
