American colleges are becoming a joke. Most of them have officially abandoned the traditional method of recruiting students based on objective standardized testing (like the SAT). Instead, they are playing a game which they call Holistic Approach that puts excessive emphasis on factors like extracurricular activities, teacher recommendations, college application essays, racial quota, special preference given to children of alumni and first generation college students etc. Make no mistake. These things absolutely have nothing to do with a student's academic potential. We are witnessing a historical decline in academic standard of the American college education.

A well rounded individual with grades, personality, community involvement, ambition to succeed despite disadvantages, is much more impressive than someone just sitting there scoring well on an exam but offers nothing else. The most well rounded students will be more successful in college and at their careers than someone who has no idea how to communicate and work well with others. This whole elimination of affirmative action programs is going to fall completely flat, mark my words. American universities have thrived because of the program and they’ve churned out very successful students of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s such a shame what’s happening with our schools just because a few people didn’t like that they weren’t accepted to the university they wanted. We can’t all get into every college we apply to.

@@sayitloudblcknproud First of all, I disagree with you that people who score well on an exam cannot have other things to offer. Second, there is absolutely no indication that this Holistic Approach used by American colleges will churn out the kind of well rounded graduates you're talking about. For example, I don't see a statistical correlation between legacy admission or athletic admission with the students' ability to communicate and work well with other people in a work environment. Nor can I see a correlation between raced-based admission and community involvement. Of course, I too admire people who have the ambition to succeed despite disadvantages, but I don't believe that we can determine if a student would have that characteristic simply based on a college application essay he or she writes. Third, colleges are academic institutions and the best job they can do is to provide academic training to the students. Their professors are best equipped to do this kind of job and they don't know how to train the students to be a well rounded individual. Therefore, we should leave the judgment to the employers who can decide exactly what kind of people they want to hire. At the end of the day, parents spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to send their kids to college to learn the technical stuffs like mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, economics etc... They don't send their kids to college and expect the school to turn them into a well rounded individual. As you well know, the Supreme Court of the United States has determined Harvard and UNC to be unconstitutional. People sued these schools because of injustice, not because they were rejected by the schools. Let this be a wake-up call to the colleges all across America.
