I’ve listened to many versions of this brilliant song. This is the best. Emmy is just incomparable. She is the queen of country and after this version I realise why. She is just brilliant in this version.

Beautiful performance of one of the saddest songs ever written. "There won't be a mention in the news of the world/of the life and death of a red girl named Lillian/who never got any further across the line than Meridian" is just a heartbreaking lyric.

This song can be about anyone who never got a chance to live a full life. My brother died when he was 11 years old in a swimming accident and I knew a kid with whom I went to school who was hit by a car. He dropped some change and stooped down to pick it up. Another young woman I knew was killed in a car accident in her twenties. Unfulfilled destinies are the hardest to understand. Sometimes when I see lights on in a house at night, I think, “I wonder what stories are going on there.”

Every song begins with with a hand reaching into the soul of "man". There are not many performers who can capture the spectrum of humanity as Emmylou Harris does...she has covered the mournful loss of kindred love to the exuberance of southern life to the broad linkage of every American region. Be advised: Emmylou Harris is a picture of the southern soul with and artistry of grace and empathy for life played on a big Gibson guitar.

Can words of a song touch the humanity of small town southern America better than this? Such a beautiful song capturing the sad, soulful reality of the era. An angel touching your heart remembering the people we lost in the war and the suffering remnants of their families. I grew up in a "red dirt" small town world in South Carolina during Vietnam.

Emmylou said in a concert or interview that she was driving on a state highway heading to New Orleans and saw the signs to Meridian and was also thinking of people with sad lives touched by the tragedy of war, poverty, abuse and so on. And out of all this she wrote what I consider one of the best songs she as ever done and written by herself. Her prowess as song writer (check out Beat the Drum Slowly) is rarely recognized.

Me and my best friend Lillian And her blue tick hound dog Gideon, Sittin on the front porch cooling in the shade Singin every song the radio played Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town Me and Lillian Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian. She loved her brother I remember back when He was fixin up a '49 Indian He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind Up around the moon and back again" He never got farther than Vietnam, I was standin there with her when the telegram come For Lillian. Now he's lyin somewhere about a million miles from Meridian. She said there's not much hope for a red dirt girl Somewhere out there is a great big world Thats where I'm bound And the stars might fall on Alabama But one of these days I'm gonna swing My hammer down Away from this red dirt town I'm gonna make a joyful sound She grew up tall and she grew up thin Buried that old dog Gideon By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard, Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard Got in trouble with a boy from town Figured that she might as well settle down So she dug right in Across a red dirt line just a little south east from Meridian She tried hard to love him but it never did take It was just another way for the heart to break So she dug right in. But one thing they don't tell you about the blues When you got em You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom There ain't know end. At least not for Lillian Nobody knows when she started her skid, She was only 27 and she had five kids. Coulda' been the whiskey, Coulda been the pills, Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill. But there won't be a mention in the news of the world About the life and the death of a red dirt girl Names Lillian Who never got any farther across the line than Meridian. Now the stars still fall on Alabama Tonight she finally laid That hammer down Without a sound In the red dirt ground
