If I'm not wrong her name is Sertab Erener, not Şebnem. She studied as opera singer in her beginnings. Very powerful voice indeed.

I recommend Sertab Erener and Izmir Big Band's performance of the song "Olsun". It's truly extraordinary.

She is a graduate of Istanbul University State Conservatory. This conservatory is one of three high quality Classical Music conservatories in Turkey and its tradition is very strong. People said that; When the conservatory education was over, many institutions, especially the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, wanted to add Sertab to their structure. But Sertab has decided to go her own way. When I was at the same school, many of Sertab's teachers were still at the school, and they had repeatedly said that if she had continued her career as an Opera Artist, she would have become the Maria Callas of today. Sertab Erener is also the 2003 Eurovision winner.

Sertab is a legend imo i listen to her for 25yrs ... she is one of the best singers in history ... i see her at the same level like mariah carey and whitney houston ... But she just cant sing in english ... her voice sounds good only in turkish ... birds fly away when she sings in english or german ... 😄

@@okanneci because i am the biggest sertab fan there is... i grew up in an english and german country ... i listened to sertab singing an old german song before that was bad and listened to her english songs i will always love you(whitney cover), everyway that i can, here i am and she has some more english songs but they all are in one word ... çöp! ... tarkan too he ruined his career with his english album ... turkish singers cant sing english ... get over it ... Everyway that i can won the prize 2003 because the choreography from the 4girls( 3 of them german) was great and the songs of the other countries were even worse ... meaning she got lucky that there wasnt one good song that year ... My favorite song of sertab is yanarim and olsun and many other songs from her in turkish ...

But you have no idea about harmony, breath, intonation, lietmotive and similar technical issues in Sertab's songs. For this reason, it is very normal that you do not understand why it is unique in English or in a different language. As a normal listener, you have a simple complaint.

@@okanneci yea you got that right i am not a singer or expert just a fan over here... back in the day i bought many cds of her and me and my friends(who were not turkish by the way) listened to her many times in my car... but all those things you listed like harmony, breath control etc become more or less useless or lets say it wont transform very well once you sing in a language which is not your native language ... and i am sure, 99% of english speakers would agree ... prove is: you will find lots of reaction videos from americans to sertab songs but just like me none of them like her english songs too much... why is it hard to understand that ... i am sure you know a lot about singing ... maybe you are the next sertab who knows ... i would buy your cd and play it my car ... :-D

I didn't say it's a Turkish word. I said normally Turkish words doesn't end with the letter b and that's why many Turkish people tend to write her name with a p by mistake. Plus, the spelling and prononciation of foreign words and names that are commonly used in Turkey, frequently change according to rules of Turkish and especially those b's at the end are replaced with a p in many cases. There are many Sertaps (with a p) living in Turkey, not in Sertab Erener's case though. But, that's why people sometimes assume it should be a p in the end.

Interesting, agree your analysis.

This is her at that age.. from 90s till early 2010s she was an alien. She has bullet proof voice and technique but those aren't even anything compared to how she delivered the story and the emotion. Her mentour Sezen Aksu is a master of that and thank god she transfered that to Sertap.

I am listening to sertab since 25yrs she is amazing i was at her concert 10yrs ago and her concert was almost empty but i enjoyed the hell out of her voice and we came in eye to eye contact ... lucky me... This is the best reaction video to her voice... and the time i watched this video it was like rediscovering sertab once again but with you ... thank you very much dear ...
