The four scenes of the Suite Pastorale are taken from Dix pièces pittoresques composed for piano in 1881. As was often the case, odd Chabrier next created an orchestration full of subtlety and vividness for certain pieces: Idylle (No. 6 transposed up one tone) with the flute's translucent limpidity, Danse villageoise (No. 7) which switches between minor and major, Sous-bois (No. 4) with its softened nuances and Scherzo-Valse (No. 10) with its utterly rustic exuberance and joy.

I like this music immensely. Beautiful evocation of countryside without being mawkish.

I have just discovered Chabrier. Thank you, Gerard, for your explanation. I now understand why this work is a 'suite'.
Genius in all ways.
This is an orchestration by Chabrier of a bunch of the most 'pastoral' of his 10 'pièces pittoresques' to form a "suite pastorale". Chabrier had a genius for the orchestra, so these pieces find a new life under their orchestral trimming. The suite is composed a posteriori, of course, but the succession of movements is convincing.

Yes, like Ravel who orchestrated most of his own piano pieces, Chabrier's orchestration is without fail delightfully idiomatic.

One need only listen to this and Le Roi Malgre Lui to realize what a versitile master of orchestration Chabrier was. He was a great and perceptive devotee of the visual arts as well. One of my very favored composers!

MrVektriol Often I don’t like orchestral recordings from Naxos, they sound mechanical. This recording is a nice surprise.
