Emma: "You Left Me?!" (Once Upon A Time S2E14)

Фильм және анимация

The scene from OUAT S2E14: Manhattan that disclosed what was actually inside the box that August showed to Neal from S2E6: Tallahassee
Well, I was expecting something more magical or maybe a piece of Rumple's possession but I guess that was good enough. Hee.
Worthy quote:
1:04 Emma: You left me?! And let me go to prison because PINOCCHIO ask u too?!
Well, if I were in that bar listening to their conversation, I might gave Neal an awkward stare. :D
Do share with all the ONCERS out there!
Feel free to request any past OUAT scenes. I'll try to give it to ya dearie.

It kinda bothers me that she uses the word "prison". She wouldn't have actually gone to prison. Her sentence was eleven months - you don't go to prison for that sentence. Prison sentences start at a year and a day, anything under that is jail (which is different).

@@ThePinkDragon See it from her perspective though. This guy abandoned her, leaving her to take the fall for his crimes without so much as a goodbye. He left her with nothing but a car and a baby that she had to give birth to while handcuffed to a hospital bed and she was forced to give him up because she knew she couldn't give him the life he deserved on her own. Everything she did, everything that defined her as a person, including the amplification of the trust issues she developed from being in foster care all of her life, happened because he abandoned her. Tell me, if that was you, would you want to let him be a part of Henry's life after he evaporated into thin air, never to be seen again, all because he was afraid of the real her that she didn't even know about? He could've helped her find her family by telling her where to start and instead he kept it secret from her and disappeared without a trace. He kept a secret from her first. At that point in the story, he didn't deserve to be trusted.

I am just so blown away by how GOOD Morrison's acting is in this scene! Not trying to knock her on the rest of the show, but she is just so natural here. Maybe because the dialogue feels so organic, so real and she is channeling the damaged, pre-Storybrooke version of Emma Swan that lived life as an orphan and betrayed by the man she has to face once again in Neal. When I re-watch this scene versus so many others, it doesn't even feel like the same show at times. The writing, acting, the everything in this episode was just so Emmy-worthy!

@@kethcup Yes, I recall think that the first 3/4 of Season 2 was great, then the last few episodes fell off a cliff. Once the writers started doing the half-season arcs, which was hit or miss. I remember both 3A and 4A being good, but 3B and 4B being awful. I think Season 5 broke the trend because 5B was better than 5A. The show just lost it's way after Season 2, though. I'm a Captain Swan shipper, and I never really took to Neal in the short time that we had with him, but I honestly was so upset when they killed him off. I feel like he should have stayed alive for Henry because I really liked their dad/son relationship. I didn't really have enough time to REALLY like Neal because I feel like we didn't get much time with him. I'm not going to bash Neal-I'm not going to bash anybody-but I feel like it would have been cool to see Emma and Neal develop a friendship and raise their son together. Keep in mind: before Neal and before Killian, there was just Emma. There was a character named Emma Swan who was badass without a man and who wasn't in a love triangle that had Swanfire shippers or Captain Swan shippers getting into internet fights over which side was better. There was Emma and Henry and a single message that the show provided-hope, not romance. I'm for Captain Swan, but I'm for Emma Swan's happiness even more.

He did what he did because he was protecting her. Neal had seen what magic did to his family and believed in seeing the future, and so believed in what August was saying. Still, August was the real asshole here.

Emma and Neal were never meant to be IMO. But it felt so cheap to make a love triangle and then kill Neal. It almost felt like the writers thought Neal needed to die in order for Hook and Emma to really be together, which sucks. I agree it would have been so amazing to see Neal be around with Henry and watch him grow up. Especially since he didn’t really get time with him. A few days in New York them back in storybrooke only for them to be separated in neverland and then again when Neal went back to the enchanted forest only to come back and Henry doesn’t remember him. That sucks. I also think it would have been funny to see Neal, Emma and Regina like triple co parent Henry.

Julie McIntyre just out of curiosity, why? I mean it was still up to Neal whether to leave or to stay. The main reason why he bolted on Emma so quickly was because he was running from his father. Sure, he also partly left her because of the whole destiny she had with breaking the curse, but he knew that once she got thrown into that world, that once she was in that same town as his father in order to break the curse, that eventually if he stayed his father would find him. It was more about Neal being a coward and running from his father. Which is exactly what he said to Emma here. Saying if he knew who she really was from the very beginning, he never would’ve gone near her to begin with. He wanted nothing to do with his father OR anything to do with anyone from that. All August did was give Neal the option to leave. Neal could’ve stayed with Emma, and tried to figure out a way to not be detected by his father, but he quickly chose to bolt on her and on everything. It’s not really August’s fault that Neal left the way he did.

angien306 eh but he left her all alone as a kid when he was supposed to watch her and make sure she went back. Even if the family still sent her back, they would have been together.

  • @maheryand8894

    @maheryand8894

@@angien306 I don't agree, that would fly against how Baelfire had been portrayed so far. He was shown to be someone who could see the best in someone (e.g. his father, initially), actively trying to protect innocents from bad people and find solutions, and generally far from being a coward. And he was also shown as someone who loved Emma enough to stick with her against his father (which he actually did in that very episode). Maybe if he had known from the beginning he would have avoided her, but by the time August had come it was too late, he was in too deep to just leave her unless he'd think it'd help her. Ultimately he left because Pinocchio strongly hinted/managed to convince him that leaving Emma alone to go back to Storybrooke on her own to break the curse was her best chance for the future, and to save her family (instead of being an abandonned child with all the trauma like him), which is why he left her, giving her everything he had to at least soften the blow and help her as much as he could now that he couldn't be with her anymore (which August pocketed ofc). Pinocchio completely failed, he kept making things worse for everyone generally and this is exactly why he reverted to being a wooden doll. Best he could hope for to atone was to rewind the clock because that's how much he screwed up.

Yeah but August could easily have just said “I know you're Baelfire.” He didn’t because the audience wasn’t supposed to know yet and the only way for them to convey it to the character but not the audience was though a visual that the audience couldn't see. Characters doing things that don’t make sense for the sake of the audience is never a good thing. I always thought it was a sketch of The Dark One Dagger.

Quinn Sinclair thinking about it, it made sense that the one thing that could change Neal’s mind was telling him his real name. The dark one dagger is probably in every fairytale book in the real world that drawing that would not be that shocking. Either way what would be more shocking, a stranger showing you a sketch of a sword that happens to look like the one your father has, or the same stranger calling you by your real name that you have given up, a name you never even told your girlfriend but a complete stranger who you never met called you by that name. Neal’s reaction in that moment is spot on. He’s like how do you know that. A sketch of the dagger he could have easily gotten from a. Fairytale book, but not his real name. No Fairytale book in this world says anything about Rumple having a son named Baelfire.

When Emma says she's over it and him it's obvious it's a LIE if she was over him and what happened, she wouldn't have brought it up. She brought it up because of two likely reasons 1.) She needs to understand what happened, because she still has questions, and thinks about it a lot consciously or unconsciously. 2.) She wants to know that it hurt him to do that to her, and she needs closure but can't find it on her own because she's still pining away for him.

I just want to point out as well that Emma gave birth to Henry in jail - and giving birth in jail, from what I have heard, is really traumatic. They chain you to a bed in the hospital so you don't run (which they're actually not allowed to do; but they do it anyway), you often have to wait ages with no painkillers during labour before anyone will take notice of you, etc. I heard a story from one woman who had to wait for shift change while in labour, because the guard on duty didn't want to deal with it. There was another story where a woman just gave birth alone in her cell because no one would help her. Oh also, giving him up for adoption might not have been a choice - because you don't get to take your baby in with you most of the time. If you're lucky, you have to get family to care for the child. Emma had no family, which means she may have been forced to give him up. That's a thing - if you don't have anyone to care for the baby, and you don't get lucky with one of the prisons/jails that does let you bring the baby back inside, the baby automatically goes into the system. Emma probably adopted him out to avoid THAT, having been someone who also grew up in the system. So she has even more reason to be upset with him than the show addresses.

About the second part, Emma’s time in prison was pretty much up so there were likely alternatives. But either way, I don’t think she thought she was capable of raising him well, prison or not.

  • @LordofFullmetal

@@mckayleem3098 You don't automatically get custody as soon as you're out. Giving birth in prison causes enough concern in most places that you have to go through CPS to get your kid back. They don't just hand the baby over to you. The woman who had to wait for a shift change? She was told repeatedly that she would NEVER be given custody; that she was losing her child forever. That didn't end up being true, but it's what she was led to believe. With that in mind, it doesn't really matter how much time Emma had left on her sentence. The options available to her were adopting her child out, or letting him end up in foster care for god knows how long. The "alternative" you mentioned? That's it - foster care. That's the alternative. You really overestimate the number of choices a US woman who gives birth in jail has - they're often not even given basic health care that they're legally entitled to; they're certainly not given many choices on what happens to their kid. I know that Emma also had issues with not feeling like she could be a good parent. I'm just pointing out that, in the situation she was in, she also really didn't have much of a choice.

As a person who believes in the power of fate. From what I've seen throughout the show, fate plays an important role in the lives of these characters.. So, it's seemed like fate took a surprising turn for Emma.. She wasn't expecting fate to be so cruel... Why him? But maybe it seems that fate was giving Henry waht he always needed... Always questioned about.. Neal had spent most of his life trying to get his father back. To bring the man who was good, who was kind back into his life but as his father grew more obsessed with power, he only saw the dark side of it.. Only trapped in a word of dark magic instead of light.. Probably because all his other family members have turned to dark magic. Pan, Fiona, Rumple..it probably runs in the family.. How this fear of rejection, of the future, of losing everything we have can lead them making the terrible of decisions.. In a way Pan, Rumple and even Neal abandoned their love ones, a child.. This scene shows just how much this trust between them has broken. Neal failed to overcome his fear. His struggle between magic and how it affects him. And yet he wants a future with her but after the years of pain, mistrust and broken emotions... This is not the time for this. She placed her ways that he can't break... As for August.. He was selfish.. But in a world that you don't know at a young age, the world is filled with temptations.. Bad temptations.. So couldn't resist. He was a child.. And it became a habit. That why he turned back into wood.. He thought by setting Emma back on the right path he was going to get out of his situation but he it didn't.. He has finally forgiven himself. And has learnt to be forgive from others.. Plus, maybe fate had other plans for Neal. His relationship with his father, to me was more important than his relationship with Emma. Fate only gave Emma to Neal so he could finally face his father after all these years of pain and hate.. Emma was just that reason..

I hope the show explains how and it eventually turns him back into a man. Well, the fact that the Blue Fairy knew about a Land Without Magic at all is a major factor. Obviously, she can't travel between worlds, but she can probably look between them. For all we know, she was keeping an eye on Baelfire while he was in a Land Without Magic because he was the Dark One's weakness, so it's possible she showed Pinocchio a photo of him or something. She might've wanted for Pinocchio and Emma to one day meet Baelfire so the 3 of them could unite and break the curse in Storybrooke and with Baelfire on the side of good, defeat Rumplestiltskin. I know it's a stretch, but still, that's all I can think of.

She wouldn't have had a reason to break the curse if she and Neal stayed together. His leaving = her getting arrested = her having Henry in prison = her giving Henry up for adoption = Henry being adopted by Regina and growing up in Storybrooke = Henry tracking Emma down and dragging her to Storybrooke to break the curse. If she and Neal stayed together, they mostly like would have kept Henry and she wouldn't have a reason to go to Storybrooke and break the curse. I think that once the curse was broken and she found Neal again, the writers should have let her be happy though. I miss Neal

No, but my point is, that Emma would have ended up breaking the curse anyways. It's her destiny to be the Saviour, so she will always end up being the Saviour. If she had had Neal with her the whole time (who knows magic and the Curse are real), Henry (who wouldn't take much convincing to believe that fairy tales are true), and a happy life, it might've actually taken *less* time for her to believe the curse was real. Get my point? :)

tsyganko I might be biased because I was never a fan of Swanfire, but I feel like they would have lived far away if that was the case (making it hard for Henry to ever track them down if they ever gave him up for adoption; not saying that would be more probable idk they were young). I used to think that way as well asking myself "Why on Earth would he think it would be in her best interest to separate under brutal circumstances (betrayal), leaving her heart broken for years and miserable thinking she would be closer to breaking the curse that way?" I mean he knew the truth, he could have influenced her. On another hand, Henry was the one who brought her to Storybook. He was the key ingredient linking her. Neal wouldn't have been able to help. Maybe August knew something...I really don't know. It would be a good question to ask the writers honestly. I understand she's destined to break the curse, but maybe certain pieces had to be arranged for that to happen and August knew that. Maybe it has something to do with the writer. But what if Neal actually felt it would be in his best interest to do so accordingly? At that point he didn't know she was pregnant, and although it would make her hate him maybe he felt like he was fulfilling a purpose (also the idea of having his old life catch up to him and meeting Emma who is from a place of magic..) but also feeling free to get away? Again, they were really young.

It's not about being HER man; it's about being A man and realizing that Emma has more important things to do than getting involved with someone. Had Neal known about her destiny before they got serious, I would hope that he would have sent her on her way. Emma, on the other hand, needed to realize that it's not always about her. Had she not gone to Storybrooke: Regina would have been evil; forever; Snow and Charming would have been trapped in their lives as teacher and coma patient, Emma would have been alone for the rest of her life without ever meeting her parents or seeing Henry, and August would have died, per se. Besides, what else was Emma going to do with her life? She was a bondsman living alone in New York City, and she clearly did not like how her life turned out.

***** I disagree. You say it's about him being "A man and realizing that Emma has more important things to do than getting involved with someone." but yet, he said it himself, he wouldn't have gone near her if he knew who she really was because of the fact that he was running from his father. "Come on what? I was in hiding, I was trying to get away from all of that." He said he wouldn't have gone near her not out of any nobility in trying to give her a better life and have her fulfil her destiny, but because he was a coward. Plain and simple. He was scared of facing his father again and knew that by being with Emma he would have to face his father, which is the LAST thing he ever wanted, which is why he told Emma he wouldn't have gone near her if he knew who she really was to begin with. It wasn't because he thought or would have thought she had "more important things to do" it was because he was coward. If he had known from the very beginning when they first met, I guarantee you he would have left her in the dust pretty much as he stated all due to the fact that he was nothing more than a coward.

angien306 Considering that Rumple murdered someone just for bumping into Baelfire and staying behind abandoning Baelfire to be sucked into our world, no, Neal was not being a coward. Neal was trying to protect himself from Mr. Gold the way grown children protect themselves from alcoholic or drug-addicted parents. If you go back to when Neal and Emma first met, she was a stranger even if August told Baelfire Emma's background earlier. To me, if I have to choose between getting to know a stranger at the risk of seeing a toxic family member and running away from the total stranger to avoid said toxic family member, I would run away. I guarantee you that anyone who actually had to go through that would run away as well if nothing else was holding that person back.

Agree. It really ruined the writing for Rumple and almost gave Henry no purpose anymore. As much as I despised Captain Swan, it’s completely possible for Neal to stay alive and be a father to Henry while Emma was with Hook. But I’ll always think Hook should have been written off the show instead of Neal.

tapo jun I just think Neal offered a lot in terms of development for Emma and a Henry. Being Henry’s father would have opened up a lot of possibilities for good relationships to grow.

Neal is my favorite character I think he should have stayed on the show longer tho at least for Henry because Henry never got to see his dad again after Regina had to destroy the curse.

To me the biggest question is how the fuck did august know about baelfire?! That was WAY before his time and honestly, as a little kid who got turned human from a wooden doll he sure does know a lot. Maybe that apprentice got to him like he sis lilu

To be fair, Neal did chose to do the right thing, but he could've chosen an even better way to do it. Instead of leaving Emma to face this all alone, or keeping her from breaking the curse, which he knew had been given to Regina by his dad, he could've decided to finally face his dad and his past and go with Emma to storybrooke to break the curse. He was gonna have to face his dad eventually, I mean, the man precipitated a series of events centuries in the making just so one bad witch would use his mom's curse which he could use to hitch a ride to the realm he was sent too, it was only a matter of time before he was gonna find him.

Who else hates Neal? He just assumed Emma was still in love with him and that he was giving her her best chance. You know what her best chance is? Letting her make her own decisions and just being there for her and listening to her.
