As a Canadian, I found it amusing hearing about your experience of winter. Good advice telling others not to come in the fall. Winter is a "thing" here. We plan our outings and travel by the weather. If you're in the Toronto area and need to get away for a long weekend in the summer, go up to The Muskokas (a couple hours north. You will see The Canadian Shield , and there are lakes everywhere. Ontario has 250,000 lakes. But be careful in the spring, it's black fly season in the wilderness. Algonquin park is also great for camping.

I'm London UK born, spent years in Nova Scotia, and now live in Toronto. Canada has good/bad points but overall checks off more boxes than the UK (and the US). Canada may not be #1 in too many things but does a myriad things very very well. Canada really doesn't have any major negative other than climate. Even there, 3 weeks in Mexico every February does wonders. Another issue is geography. It's wise not to judge Canada after only spending time in one city. The country varies substantially by region.

Loved this video Luke, we spent two years in Alberta and hoping to come back with my husband's job. I agree with everything you said especially American healthcare and the space in Canada!

I'm a craftsman aiming to immigrate to Canada from the UK for the reason of space and the fact that Canada still cares about their environment. Looking into immigration now as I no longer believe the UK is conducive to a happy healthy life any more. Cramped, frustrating, overcrowded and very little opportunity to make progress. I'll gladly lose a couple weeks holiday to buy a better quality of life there. Thanks for the video, useful

Yes I can imagine it's very tough. The UK is a beautiful place but just too many people in too much of a small space. I’m a registered nurse uk and we get 5 weeks but it’s really 8 weeks because of shift work and have that reduced down to 2 is a huge factor.

It is difficult to deal with I think me and my girlfriend will end up moving back to the UK before winter this year. Some people really love it out here and don't care about the holiday it's really how much that means to you. As far as being a nurse goes you would get treated very well in Canada. You could make triple your UK salary. Nurses in Canada are unionized so your holidays wouldn't be bad either. I think as a nurse you would be better off in Canada. Working less but earning more.

mary m Hello so I’m still in school currently (in the UK) but plan to move to Canada I’m thinking NB when I’m older. I want to be a dermatologist (haven’t decided yet if I’d train and then move or move then train) is that a job I could easily get over there? Also I know this will sound petty but what are your shops like because when you here of North American shops all you hear is Target but I’m aware there aren’t any in Canada just the U.S (which I wouldn’t want to move to personally) Also before I got my citizenship do you have any idea how the health system would work for me? I recomend Ottawa its between Toronto and Montreal and its a great city for schools and government work And you dont really need a car because of the good bus line OCTranspo About 5 to 10 mins wait and the bus line has its own reserved roadway so they skip the traffic and a monthly bus pass is about 80 dollars for unlimited use during the month but DO NOT TAKE THE TAXI its a ripp off There is also an underground train that opened up recently and most work is government stuff as for travel there are lots of good places in Québec and PEI also the Algonquin parc in Ontario is great if you like canoe camping (there's a spot with natural water slide) As for outside the country i recomend either going to Europe or skipping the US and going to Cancoon Mexico (great place) and when ever you shop anywhere make sure you have an air miles card it and ask if they take air miles that way you can get free flights every Canadians uses it (its like a points card)

Absolutely right on all of your points. Convenience and accessibility are my main factors why I want to immigrate to Canada from th the U.K. I can totally get you why you were annoyed. I hate the cramped streets, supermarkets, cafes. Everything. Going to Aldi here is one hell of an experience.

Good job mate thanks for that video I'm Canadian and for a long time enjoyed the place however recent housing prices have been a constant pain in the behind thankfully my parents got a place at the right time before all the shitstorm in the housing market back in 2016 avg house price was 500k You're right on about space, affordability is getting outta hands, taxes are kinda outrageous, healthcare is goin downhill but I wish govt did something abt changing that

Come to Vancouver Island! We've an amazing environment with Canada's mildest weather (sunny hot tourist summers) if you can live with it raining 40-50% days of the year (the kind of rain you can walk around in with a hoodie the vast majority of the time). Plenty of job prospects, be it white collar or blue collar. Extremely open to immigration and multiculturalism in the province. And you're very close to Vancouver on the island, just a quick ferry ride away (extremely affordable if you're not a drive-on, and you probably wanna use Metro Van's transit system tbh), but the island is generally much more affordable. Very desirable areas of the island are relatively affordable (Nanaimo, Parksville-Qualicum, Comox Valley). Not as affordable as Alberta, but you're paying for what you get (outside of Vancouver lol).

I may be heading in that direction after this COVID stuff is done with. We visited that area of the Island in July, also visiting next July and we fell in love with it. Rain isn't an issue as long as there is good skiing in the winter and if it's mild after living in Calgary you can appreciate it. Check out some of my more recent videos. And thanks!!

It is possible to negotiate vacation time depending on your employer, however you may have to accept a slightly lower salary. My wife managed to get 4 weeks like this.

Yes it is. Or just accept a higher salary and take unpaid time off. Unpaid time off was very uncommon in the UK but is common here. Toronto is an exception to that rule as Toronto is more like USA with regards to time off.

I'm from Wolverhampton mate so I understand about how busy the west midlands is! I've always wanted to move to Canada, hopefully I can achieve that one day.

Good video. Not sure your line of work, but there are jobs that offer more vacation. I get 5 weeks working at a bank. Two weeks is standard for most work places, but you get more days or weeks with more years of service typically.

Glad you get 5. I could take 5 but I wouldn't get paid for it, I get three currently. I hate it goes with service as staying with one employer in most industries won't get you much in your career but in depends on what your after

Worcester squad, honestly im debating moving I have a best friend in British Columbia and the only thing keeping me in the UK is the fact I'm 18 and have no money I want to buy my parents house before I leave we can get it for 40k it's a 4bed with a 3600square foot garden it leaves somewhere stay if everything goes south im struggling to see why to stay Canada even with there high tax it ends up being slightly more expensive and it looks way more fun an worthy trade off in my opinion.

@@Bella-mi5kw Depends on where you work. I work in health care under a Union and i get 25 days per year, 12 stat days and ive banked almost 10 thousand dollars in sick time. Also depends on where you live in the country. British Columbia is a pro union province so vacation time is better. Builds with more seniority

If you can deal with the winter, which I think is the worst part of Canadian life, and still like it, I believe you come to the right place!

So true. I have dealt with terrible UK winters miserable, wet, damp. You cannot walk anyway as it's so muddy and you will slip on your ass. At least here the ground freezes over and you can walk on it no problems. The winter is really as big of an issue as the person makes it. I embrace it that is why we moved to Calgary. If you don't like winter Calgary is an awful place as it's winter 8 months of the year basically.

I think by law it is 2 weeks only plus whatever stat holidays there are (generally if you are a full time employee you get them all), however to be competitive at least in my industry, a lot of companies base your time off on experience. Most companies I've worked for will give you time off based on industry experience rather than experience with the company, for instance, I started a new job in January, I have 17 years of experience and they gave me 5 weeks vacation. I agree it does suck starting out with just 2 weeks, you just have to find ways to stretch it out, for instance early on in my career, I would take 1 or 2 days off tacked on to a stat holiday weekend, fly out of Buffalo and go somewhere random like New Orleans for 4 or 5 days, or do a 4-5 day all inclusive to the Caribbean or Mexico in the winter etc.

Hey, yes I suppose that would be right for some industries. I decided to start my own business so that all the hard work I put in, I also get out, as to be honest I'm such a hard worker and have so much to give. Plus I don't want to live in Canada during winter I want to be some place warm so that was a really good motivating force for me! Ya, Canada is kind of funny in that it tries to find a middle ground between the U.S. and Europe. The aforementioned vacation for example. In Europe, you have a good month or more of mandatory vacation whereas in the U.S. you have no mandatory vacation. So Canada gives 2 weeks. Much more if you're federal government. With health care, in Europe nearly everything is covered or at least very cheap whereas in the U.S. nothing is covered without private insurance (unless you're on Medicare or Medicaid). In Canada, most things are covered with taxes except dental and prescriptions and a few other things.

Roads are quite narrow and parking is expensive in the center of cities in England . I had to pay for using old public toilets in some tourism spots in london.

Yes driving in the UK is a literal nightmare when you're used to the roads in Canada. 2 weeks is excluding the stat holidays. Canada gets 3 extra stat holidays compared to the UK however it does vary province to province. However in Sask they now get 3 weeks minimum holidays plus stat holidays so this is helping change the rest of Canada. It is very unusual for an employer to not give 3 weeks if you ask for it. Most good employers you start with 3 weeks anyway like my employer.

Interesting perspective. I agree with the vacation issue. Some employers increase the vacation period depending on how long you've worked for them. What has always annoyed me living here (in Alberta) is that it's cheaper to fly to any major destination in Europe, than it is to fly to Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, etc. Just crazy. As for our health care system, we've had some politicians trying to convince the electorate from time to time, to adopt an American style of health care system. No. Thank. You. Our system may not be perfect, but it sure is better than the USA and UK.

Thanks Luke, Great video. We moved to Canada from Scotland 6 years ago. Me, wife, two kids and a dog. We have not regretted our decision once. Our situation was different (everyone's is I suppose) but my wife managed to secure a work transfer within her company of 20 years, so we hit the ground running. The vacation subject is very interesting. We grew up in Scotland, and there was always this "two weeks in Spain" mentality. And of course you had to all go during the same two weeks in summer when the kids were off school lol. We have found in Canada, that people are more likely to go away in Winter, to somewhere warm. And the Spain equivalent seems to be Cuba or Dominican Republic. Summers in Ontario are pretty damn good. June to August are easily above 25 degrees, sometimes hitting 35, without the crazy humidity you get in Florida. So we never really felt the need to go away on Summer holidays. I totally agree. Winter is peak travel season from Canada. Even Spain is rainy during winter and not warm so probably in UK you have to go 6 hours + flight to get guaranteed warmth. Whereas in Ontario you can be in warm Florida in 3-4 hrs. In Calgary you can be in warm Phoenix in 3-4hrs. Warmth is never far. Glad you didn't regret it. I very much miss the Ontario summers they are fantastic especially with the lakes. If it ever gets too warm head to Beautiful Georgian Bay. Calgary has the mountains just over an hour away. Work opportunity is low right now. Rent in Vancouver is way too high. It rains relentlessly all winter too. You may be where you need to be right now.

Scotland is a beautiful place I have visited many times. Alberta is really tough place to live right now. Cost of living is very expensive considering the economy is simply non existent. Nobody would live here if the Rocky Mountains weren't there. Just bare in mind after living in Calgary it would be hard to adapt to Scotlands weather it rains as much as Vancouver Island with worse summers than the lower mainland. However if you don't mind lots of rain it is like a fairy tail place.

It would be Canada for sure. The people here are amazing. We've just moved out to western canada and the vacation issues that were bad in Ontario and the east are not so bad here out west (more laidback) however which part of Canada you move to really depends on your personality, what you do for a living (as some places are so expensive) and what your hobbies are. Vacation is a huge adjustment from the UK. You can fly anywhere in Europe cheap. Here in Canada it's more expensive to fly. Thanks for subscribing. Good luck hope you get PR!

Thank you for this, you're not the first I've heard talk about the holiday time, but presumably you can take unpaid leave? I'm also interested in the health care, I'm considering moving, even though I'm 51 - my education level makes up the points, but I do have a chronic illness and take regular medication...I'm worried that under the circumstances it's impractical.

@@neillrogers3604 tonnes of my own research. I was lucky that I had receiprical agreement with an immigration lawyer so they checked over my applications. The bridging work permit is the main one. Both me and my girlfriend got it. Lots of people get rejected though for that. I would get in the express entry pool for PR soon as you can. See how many CRS points you have before you move.

We have calculated points based on our current situation and are on the borderline (around 440). We arent going to apply for PR until we have been there for a few months just to see how we settle. That and we dont want to be turned away for our IEC before we even start!

One question I have is how difficult is it to find work once you land out there? Or is that something you must have in place prior to going? Ideally I would love a job within what my degree specialises in (oil/energy). So first off I'd do any job in all honesty unless I could secure one before leaving. Cheers.

Finding work was really not that hard. My girlfriend found a job in Toronto within 2-3 weeks. Then she moved on from that job a month later to something better. I found a job before we moved which is difficult if not impossible unless you're in a niche for what you do for work. If you specialize in oil and energy either Calgary or Edmonton would be an ideal place.

I also wondered about moving to Canada, but I just feel social life is much better in UK than Canada. Everyone in Canada lives 30 minutes away from each other, in UK you have all your friends in your area and if you are bored you can still go to the pub etc. I think its a huge factor.

Jon H everyone drives here so distance isn’t a problem. While the uk is denser. if you live in certain areas like southern Ontario, Vancouver, Montreal there are millions of people within a couple mins plus we have massive freeways

I agree if social life is your thing then Canada can be an isolating place and I think that comes down to space. However cities like Toronto are massively social places even more social than cities in the UK. So it does depend on where you are.

Hi Luke, I respect your preferences for different lifestyle and choices .. but I wonder if you ever thought of living in any small city in the UK instead of living in big cities or before moving into Canada? I am asking this because currently I am living in Southampton, a small city in England with my husband, and so far I found it less crowded, with less traffic, yet everything seems to be almost within the reach once I have the info about what to reach for when and how. driving may not be as comfortable as compared to that in Canada because of the 'Space Issue', but you might still be able to experience almost all flavors of nature within the UK and it takes even a few days to make the most out of vacation...keeping in mind that people in the UK gets reasonably more holidays per year. it's not even too cold here down the South in winter and the Summer also warmer compared to the other northern parts in the UK ... .. I hope you get what I mean ... I might not be comfortable living in the UK again for sure if I ever moved to Canada, because we are human and easily get attached to the things we slowly fall in love with - be it living in one of biggest countries Like Canada with a vast space all around, groceries within the reach, comfortable and spacious home, long and never-ending like roads, nice working environment and people, even though it is a bit disheartening when comes to 'how to make the most of our vacation with less holidays per year' ... Sorry for the lengthy comment .. however, thank you very much for the video and all the points you mentioned in the comparison .. I hope you guys are having great time in new country.

Hello yes we have sorry for such a long reply. The notifications were never coming up for these comments so I am replying to them all now. It was not easy to find out what visa but if you're under 30 you can take the IEC visa. Then if you like Canada after 1 year you can apply for PR via CEC class. I did secure a job before I went and it was tough to do so. However if you have IEC it makes it easier especially if you're in a skilled profession. I'm in software implementation but my girlfriend is in general admin found a job within 2 weeks of landing. We did but if your under 30 you can obtain work permit through IEC most EU countries have a reciprocal agreement with Canada and you can get a 2 year no red tape work permit. Thanks 😊

It's way better if you go to university in Canada. Reason is because then you are eligible for a work permit. Not only that after you finish university you can apply for a post graduate work permit and or depending on the length of your course apply for PR. Also you qualifications will be accepted by Canadian employers and you'll have better chances for getting a well paying job. Leaving fresh from university in the UK and trying to emigrate to Canada would be tough. Because you would only have the option of express entry which is a points based system. And as you would have no work experience your points could be not high enough to get PR. However as your under 30 your other option is you could apply for the IEC which is a no red tape way to a work permit. However its a lottery to whether you get picked or not for IEC. And also UK university qualifications wouldn't have as much value as Canadian ones on job applications in Canada. What did you do in the end? I'm a Brit in my late 20s about to make a very similar decision. I've been in Ontario with my British GF for 18months and we need to decide whether to renew our visa or go back. We are originally from London and (it seems) similar to you in that we came over with professional jobs. It's a tricky decision to make as, like you said, both are really nice. We are leaning towards extending at least for another year. Also, why on earth did you decide to live in Milton rather than Toronto?!

We lived in Toronto but it was too expensive and we didn't like condo living. Check out my new videos we ended up staying i got a job with a better company and moved out to Calgary. Love it out here will never return to the UK now we have PR and I'm staying forever.

It is cheaper. But you won't get government assistance loans here that's the only problem. You have to be a permanent resident for that. So you have to have funds to pay for accommodation and your university fees up front. At the end of university you can become a permanent resident

I'm coming to Ottawa from the UK in Aug to do a PhD and I have no fees (thanks to Canada scrapping international fees and my high GPA), and I get a $24k stipend per year. The MSc students get a stipend too I think.

@@LunakieCherrie Check to see what scholarships the university is offering, normally can be found under the finance/fees section on courses you are interested in. Most of the time it's just a form or a written thing. Post grad stuff seems to be funded because you have to do teaching assistant stuff along side your degree.

Quick update - 5 years later they now live in Calgary and he says he'll never move back to the UK!!!

Hey, so my girlfriend didn't have a job lined up. In a big city like TO it was easy for her to get a job within 2 weeks of landing. She does admin work. It doesn't matter really you just have to be able to afford that. Toronto is extremely expensive and with a solo income of under 60k that can make finding a place to live difficult as they will look at your income and think. As newcomers we had to put 7 months rent up front to get a condo in Toronto. You need to have $50k saved up minimum for two people to move to Toronto. Good luck

You can do both in Canada yes. I think you can stay on visitor status for up to 6 months. Depending on where you go just make sure you have enough money to satisfy CBSA that you can support yourself. Tell the truth also there is no law against coming as a visitor and looking for sponsored work.

If you're under 30 it's IEC. If not skilled worker program is another way you can move without employment sponsorship

You certainly can. Take the IEC visa and you can work for 2 years no red tape then apply for CEC class PR if you want to stay.

​@@JGarner.2004Don't listen to them mate I was around 13 when I decided the UK wasn't where I wanted to be. We actually see things the most clearly when we are younger. I went and visited family in the US saw how they lived compared to us and was like I'm leaving. It eventually became Canada because my family advised US healthcare system is a disaster. However if the healthcare ever changes I will likely move to the US as there are more opportunities for my line of work which is software. I also work for a US company now. Just one suggestion pick interior bc or Alberta because the costal regions of bc like Vancouver have a 3 month dry season with drought followed by 9 months of rain and miserable weather. Because Alberta is in the rain shadow of the rockies you have world class skiing and MTB so close. Not only that the sun shines 333 days a year and I can say it is probably more. I hate rain one of the reasons I've avoided bc. Good luck

I don't know i may go back to England soon as work benefits are better in England. Not only that it is warmer year round and green. Canada is cold in winter and has awful worker rights such as vacation. However obtaining permanent residence in the UK is very hard and expensive. Canada is easier. So UK is better

@@LukeOnTheMove Come to Victoria or Vancouver, the weather is as mild as the UK. I live on the Island, Victoria, it gets a third of the rain fall of Vancouver, rarely drops below freezing. Smallish at about 350000 people but very compact and walkable. Victoria has a rep for being British, whatever that means. Its really quite nice here, lots of lakes, the ocean, beaches, beautiful lush rainforests...if you like the outdoors, its nice for camping, cycling and hikes. Housing is expensive though but the employment rate is really good.

There is such a short supply of rentals in Kelowna and Victoria these places have the lowest occupancy rates in canada for rentals. That makes competition really tight. I wish it was different

Best way is IEC which anybody can get that visa as long as they have no criminal background and under 30 years old

If you were in Toronto I think it would be easier if your single especially with meeting people and making friends. But unless in your line of work you get paid over $70k you will have to go into a house or apartment share. Basic admin jobs in downtown Toronto pay between $40-$50k

@@nav4903 as soon as your 18 you can apply IEC when it opens. Apply every year if you don't get picked one year apply again. If you get invited to apply for the IEC visa apply for it and then try and find a job before you leave. In places like Toronto you will find work quickly. If you want some advice on industry or what to study here is some. Study dentistry and you don't have to be a dentist but even a hygienist or dental assistant you will suceed in Canada.

Its more complicated than that. You would need to qualify for a work permit which most people don't and its almost impossible to obtain. If your under the age of 30 you can get a work permit through the working holiday program from 2 years. Then you would possibly qualify for CEC Inland permanent residence after being in the country 1 year. But it depends on your education and a whole range of different things which you would need to do. Thats an explanation in the simplest of terms.

Some of us definitely do fucking SUCK at driving. Living here on the west coast, in an area with a higher than average/desired percentage of wealthy, entitled retiree types, traffic can be HORRIBLE during the day when they're awake and sequestering the roads from people that know how to shoulder check, lane signal, and maintain a consistent cruise speed. Lol

I agree. I think the drivers test is just not strict enough. We saw the same in the UK with people coming from Europe who had terrible driving skills and the driving went to shit from the big real EU push in 2014

All I know is ,as a resident from British Columbia, nurses are in extremely high demand as our baby boomer population (a large portion of the population) is retiring which means a loss of many nurses AND a massive increase in the need for nurses. Not sure exactly how a german would get that job here but there are lots of Phillipina nurses who come here, I cannotsee why a German nurse could not get a job but local unions have in the past made efforts to prevent the use of foreign nurses, not sure if they made any progress through changes in immigration or not. Bottom line is there sould be a LOT of nurseing opportuities. I am under the impression that our schools cannot keep up with the demand for nurses.

You first need a working visa which is very easy to get as a nurse. I suggest you do the come to Canada tool on the government of Canada website to see what you qualify for then I would move to either B.C or Ontario as pay and working conditions is best for nurses in these places.

As a British Columbian born and raised I find this video extremely interesting. I recently visited the UK and absolutely loved it. I think the number one problem I identified is simply just how young we are. We have absolutely no infrastructure compared to the UK. What will take me 2-3 hours to transit across Vancouver will take me 15 minutes in London via the metro and the busses. And Vancouver is tiny compared to London. I think what BC needs to focus on and perhaps the rest of Canada is infrastructure. If BC was more connected via affordable high speed rail for example it would literally be the best place on Earth..ironically the slogan of the province. The other thing is probably more a continental thing but we all literally work ourselves to death. My parents spent the last ten years looking forward to retirement..not the way to live.

No totally I get it. However London does not tell the whole story and is literally the only place in the UK. Not only that price of train fares in the uk will send you bankrupt. A monthly ticket from reading to London distance of about 60 miles is over £800 ($1400). At least transit is publically funded in Canada. Also you make a point about infrastructure well the UK cell towers are barely putting out LTE outside of London and internet speeds in my home city were around 25mb compared to Calgary I get 600mb and I get LTE in national parks

Through LinkedIn. Just messaging thousands of people. Paying for the premium LinkedIn. I tried to contact at least 5 people a day. Using a copy n paste message I had previously created. I did this for years and kept at it. This is what got me here. Believing in myself and not giving up.

Tax % is about the same. But no national insurance here makes it significantly cheaper. VAT is also way lower. Capital gains varies massively depending on which province.
