Well done Man! Best demo I’ve seen by far. Apart from the fact that you can play. I used EMGs throughout the 90s and they served very well. Later I found passive pickups to be a massive change that culminated in a constant hunt thru many boutique brands before finding Fralin Vintage hots. I’ve recently gone back to EMG’s to drop into a cheap strat copy. I struggled a bit with the brittle nature of passives. EMG’s are consistent and solve a lot of issues. I’m looking forward to hearing them again and seeing what they can do for a Harley Benton. Another tip I’ve heard is to lower them for a more vintage passive tone

Great demo! I've had many EMG sets over the years. Although they're not the only brand I use they to stand out for their tonal versatility and amazing headroom. I don't think you can really take the single coil strat sound, even into the late 20th century, without EMGs. The Gilmour set is wonderful. I'm about to load another set on one of my strats. I also love their 81 humbucker, but at the moment I'm in more of a single coil mood.

Great review. I just happen to get this in my YT feed. I have the 3 SA's in a strat I'm building now.. I don't have the expander or the SPC. I am thinking about the SPC. I play blues and classic rock and metal. EMG's are great. .I don't think they are too compressed unless you add way too much distortion! I love them.. Thanks for the review and great playing and tone..

I built a custom strat using the DG20 back in 2000. I absolutely love it. The EXG works very well to scoop those mids out when I am doing metal rhythm. I tried the 81 as a sub in the bridge slot to see if I could improve my already stellar sound but ended up putting the SA back in. I also have an 81/85 setup in an explorer but find the DG20 to be 100 times more versatile.

Excellent review and on the point of sterility, I think a lot of that myth comes from the fact that so many early adopters in the late 80s were recording directly to their mixing board and compensating with eq and heavy compression. I actually like that sound but, for sure, that is a sterile kinda sound.

  • @nsen74

I did like the SPC more than the EXG knob. I’d rather have the SPC with a passive tone than EXG. One thing I do like about the SA pickups is the sustain was better, the clarity, and there was an even balance with the strings. No drop outs. With my Fender noiseless sometimes when I do bends they pitter away or sound thin when doing bends. With this setup, it doesn’t have that issue.

If you want classic strat clean sound consider Fender Original '57/'62 pickups and save a bunch of money (unless you need the noise/hum cancellation). Consider putting a stacked humbucker in the bridge if you want more output there.

I used to put DiMarzio in that metal box too.. Until I got some sweet low output sweet PAF pickups in an ESP LP copy. That changed my mind immediately. It just looks like these will have sweet spots. Might need to barrow the wifes nail polish and mark some dots for quick settings until I get muscle memory. As far as sounding like a vintage 50’s with staggered pole pieces. When Im clead im modulated solid state, jazz chorus, when Im not Im full on cranked cooking tubes. And compressor is always on. Some of my fav tones are those old lace sensors. These remind me a lot of those. I do wish it had more db on tap though.

I think the 81/SA is EMGs best combination. Unless their X-series variants better them, I haven't made my mind up on that one. If anything else does what 81 and SA does I'd be equally interested. No matter the brand or whether it's passive or active. To my ear some Bill Lawrence pickups get close to the punch and clarity, namely L90/L45. For high gain rhythm SD Distortion can sound remarkably close to the 81. I urge everyone to keep an open mind and let your ears decide what sounds good.

That is a gorgeous strat. I have a MIJ Fender Pawn shop 51 that has the Texas special neck and the fender enforcer HB in the bridge. There is no tone pot for this guitar. Would a set of emg improve or enhance the tonal possibility? Right now I use a mxr 6 band eq a boss ce2 and for delay and some womany tone OD I use a mad professor golden cello which is an awesome pedal. If I had a spare I would send it for you to demo but mine is glued to my PB. I have 2 other strats, both stock, so I am not too nervous about modding at least one. Would love a review of your guitars as well as your pedal board or what you are using at church if you are still playing there. I saw the patron link for your ministry. I will check it out as well as your email. I play at church too and am always looking to learn and improve in all areas.

Hi Toney! great to hear from you! yes I think the EMG DG20 setup would be great for one of your strats. I love both passive and active pups myself. I think removing the tone knob is great for humbuckers but not for single coils-to bright and tinny with no tone knob IMO. Yes Im still leading worship Ill do a demo of my pedal board soon! Also uploading an ORIGINAL worship song today!

I have both the SSL-1s and EMGs playing in a Pink Floyd tribute. I seem to like the EMGs live more due to noise, buzz. Etc. The SSL-1s due to the crisp sound for blues.

@@nsen74 Thank YOU!! Man you have me confused in which. As everything I hear from both especially gilmour is out of this world. So either way! But being the EMG has no noise ....hmmmm. Well I can always try to have 3 strats. One is my black which ill add the ssl1 etc. And the red one ill buy and build. I have a classic vibe 60s though that for some reason sounds so amazing with the loaded stock Fender player series I put in it. Big diff. My Black strat has ceramic fender standards. In fact I just made vid using it. Hahahah. Thank you!!!

@@robertclarkguitar Nice. Yeah, well if you are really into Floyd go to Gilmourish.com. He explains every pickup configuration Gilmour had. I messed around with a bunch of them and came to the conclusion that the EMG SA's were the best bet because I get an overall better sustain, clean, clarity which works best for those soaring solos like in Comfortably Numb plus no noise whatsoever. People complain about how sterile these are. I agree they have one kind of sound but that sound is amazing. These sound great through modulation pedals and processors. Not so much with fuzz but with distortion built into the amp they are great. I'm a big fan of the SPC knob but not the EXG knob so much. EXG knob can get muddy, cut out the highs, and add a scoop. Good for heavy metal, but that not my thing. If I were to get a passive pickup set to get the Gilmour sound I would go with either (SSL-1 neck, SSL-1, Middle, and SSL-5 Bridge) or (Fender CS69 neck and middle, and SSL-5 in the bridge). I think along with the EMG SA's these are the best configurations. The one with the best sustain though is the EMG SA's. Keep that in mind. Good luck

In your opinion, can the exg control be used to make a 24 fret strat neck pup sounds like a 22 frets pup, by boosting its bass ?

So the thing with this set is, they don't have the dynamics that a normal set of passives would have, so I use a rack mount expander in front of it, or digitally i will use Reapers Reacomp set to a pretty heavy upwards expansion to decompress thd pickups. When doijt that they gain the dynamics and feel of a normal passive set, with all the benefits of noise free active operation EMG is known for. If I don't have my rack or VST usable, I cannot use my DG20 loaded strat and opt for a different Strat with passives in it. Same goes with my Les Paul with EMG81/85 in them unless I'm playing metal which I rarely do anymore. But again, with the expansion, and not the "EXG Expansion", like a legit rack (of such a pedal exists that can 10:1 upwards please let me know), they feel like normal, but amazing sound pickups. Awesome video though!

Interesting thankyou I find the TS808 seems to be the ticket rather than the pickups and controls. Too much reverb and too toppy for me overall. The Clapton Strat is far simpler to me. And I have to say I find the EMGs sterile sounding, not natural. Lack roundness. I came away not getting it. Between 2 tube screamers, 2 of the EMG controls on off I just can't see the point. I get all this and more with a few pedals frankly. A treble boost and overdrive. Not my thing but horses for courses. I won't be buying

That reverb makes the guitar sound like a Chinese Dustbin lorry driving through an electric fire! Horrible! BTW I've got the EMG DG (SSS) pickguard setup in my Strat, and it sounds great. Not especially Fendery, but good.
