Emetophobia: How To Get Rid Of A Tight Throat

I have suffered from emetophobia for years (and specifically having a tight throat) and have just recently managed to get rid of it for good! I found that a lot of people were looking for a way to get rid of it, so I thought i'd make a video in the hopes that It may help someone else.
I used to have a tight throat for hours and hours every single day and wasn't able to go out for fear of it making me sick. I desperatley looked for videos that might help, but nothing did. Finally, I decided to face the problem by myself, and after doing this method (only twice), I've happily been able to live my life completely without it! It doesn't even tighten when I think about it!
Would advise completing this fantastic stress relief yoga video by 'Yoga With Adriene' before you begin. You will feel amazing and ready to tackle the problem: • Yoga For Stress Relief

Please let me know if this helps you - I think it will definitely be more effective though once you do the technique by yourself.

The way I get rid of a tight throat is either chewing gum or ginger candy and water personally. But I'm glad to hear about your way.

i have been getting the tight throat feeling for years but ive never been able to decribe it to anyone. your description is so accurate and my experience finally feels validated :) i just wish i was able to make it disappear simply by asking myself “whats the worse that can happen”, you make it seem so easy! oh well i probably just need more practice. thank you for sharing :)

Oh I'm so glad I could help! Yeah it took me quite a while to realise what it actually was, so I don't blame you. Aah yes, it won't go over night, it takes practice to be able to really sit with the feeling and just observe it rather than push it away - wasn't easy by any means! Keep trying and see if it helps, but don't push yourself 💕 No problem!

i feel very similar to you. my emetophobia also started in year 5 at primary school, it’s currently so bad that i haven’t left my house in over a year, i have severe ocd because of it, it affects every part of my life. i relate to the things you said SO much. in fact i don’t think i’ve ever found anyone that relates to me emet as much as you did. i’ve had cbt, exposure therapy etc but none of it helped. i’m currently in a very dark, horrible, and incredibly painful place. but this video helped ease some of the anxiety. thank you. i’ve noticed you haven’t posted recently, i still hope you will read this x

Thank you for your message and I'm so, honestly, insanely sorry that you have to deal with this! I too had CBT (I go into that in my next video) I found it great for short term help, but long term required something else. Have you ever tried EMDR therapy? I'm currently having sessions and I would definitely recommend it if you can, it's amazing the effect it has on the way you think. I know what it's like to be terrified to leave the house, it's a slippery slope and so easy to do. If I have learn't anything from this phobia though, it's that you have to fight it. If you can do one thing that challenges your fear, even if it's a tiny, small thing, it will start to alleviate some of the anxiety. Like, walking 2 minutes out of the house. It may be terrifying the first time, yes. But if you do it again the next day, it won't be as bad. I promise you that. The third time, even less. Then maybe, when you feel ready, you walk 5 minutes out of the house. Challenge the fear, but don't push yourself. Know your limits. if you need a day to recuperate after that two-minute walk, do it. If there is one bit of advice I can guarantee to be completely true (because I've proved it to myself again and again and again), it's that the SECOND time of doing something terrifying will NEVER be as bad as the first. Never. I am telling you this because when you are at your worst point, when every waking moment is filled with fear, pain, and anxiety, challenging yourself, even a tiny bit, will alleviate that. It takes guts, absolutely. A heck-tun-god-load of guts. But it is 100% possible. And you WILL survive. Apologies for the essay, so difficult to get everything across without monologuing, haha! Do stay in touch though. If you have any questions or if I can somehow help in any way, please don't hesitate to ask. Stay strong, because you are GOING to survive this!!!

Hey, thanks so much for this! I struggle a ton with tight throat from my emetophobia and relate heavily with it getting much worse after a period of stress. Did you ever have trouble with dentistry as a result? I desperately need to go, but a combination of fears and panic make it impossible!

No worries at all! Weirdly I haven't had problems with dentistry but then I haven't needed to go for a while 😅 If you squeeze your right thumb within your palm though it's supposed to stop the gag reflex, so I wonder if that might help? I've used it several times in the past as a last resort and it seems to do the job. It's particularly recommended for people that have problems with dentistry would you believe!

No worries, don't push yourself, maybe take a break and come back to it later when you feel ready. But yes, if you can, try and sit with that uncomfortable feeling and just observe it for what it is. Don't try to relax it (sometimes forcing relaxation will make it stay longer, it has to happen naturally), just watch it, notice the muscles being used and how that affects what your brain is telling you. Sit with those feelings for as long as you can. Don't attempt to relax, just observe 😊

Usually once you're sick (say for instance, a stomach bug), your body doesn't have any reason to continue to be nauseous because it's gotten rid of the substance that's making it ill. Unless you're taking medication/pills/antibiotics or you're putting something into your body that is causing continuous nausea. This is as far as I have experienced personally, I am, of course, not a doctor 😁

I got my covid vaccine on Saturday and it’s now Monday, I felt so bad with it like the side effects was horrible, I couldn’t leave my house. My mum stupidly asked us to go out camping ( we go like 2 times a month ) I was really unwell with the vaccine and she asked me calmly if I wanted to go and it’s okay if not and I said no but i don’t wanna ruin it, she started going all mad and said she’s selling the camping stuff and she’s gonna turn the wiFi off and not pay the tv bills. and I said it’s fine. Right later on i went downstairs and I was shaking and sweating and I said I could hardly breathe and I was paniking like very bad I was crying. She said “maybe if you came out of your f*cking bed.” And I was like what 😃. And then she told me to take this numbing thing but I’m not sure that would help so I said no and she started getting mad at me about the whole camping situation and was yelling and I started crying and I said that I can’t deal with this rn and this isn’t the right time even tho I literally told her I could barely breathe like 5 mins before she was yelling. she started yelling and me and calling me rude and a b*tch. But this video helped me SO much. your vids have helped me through a lot of panic attacks. Thank you.
