Emerson's Over-soul: Connecting with Universal Consciousness

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an essayist, lecturer, poet and philosopher of the 19th century. Emerson was a champion of individuality and a critic of the pressures of conformism imposed on individuals by modern society.
In this video I'm going to examine two of Emerson's essays; History and The Over-Soul.
Emerson believed that all peoples are an outlet of the Over-Soul. The Over-Soul is the unity which unites all people into one being. Because we are all a piece of the Over-Soul we have an inlet to every period in history. Since we all share the same Spirit we can sympathize with any period in history and experience what they experienced in ourselves.

4:36 “Understanding the voices of birds, are the obscure efforts of the mind in the right direction.” Funny he says that. In studying music and the collective unconscious I came across the Zebra Finch. A bird who even when raised alone in captivity, learns how to sing their genetically inherited song independent of outside instruction. Which illustrates the music is implanted in the bird. This raises the question, what music is implanted in me?

The English psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist in his book "The Mastery and His Emissary" suggests that fossil records of our early ancestors suggests that humans used to communicate with song much like birds. This could explain why music is so important in our culture. Music communicates thought's and feelings. "Affect" is the music of the soul.
