I am a Fire Chief and had a person walk into the Station with Tungsten Carbide ring stuck on an injured finger. The ring cutter did not even scratch the surface. I quickly researched this on the internet and used this technique to remove the ring. It worked great and the person was very thankful. Thanks to the help of our maintenance person as well.

I had a tungsten toe ring that stubbornly refused to come off. It was too tight in the first place and when a small amount of fluid enlarged my toe further, it had to be removed. Following the excellent advice in this video allowed to me to quickly and painlessly free my toe from tungsten bondage and avoid any further problems. I was amazed at just how brittle tungsten really is.

This absolutely worked beautifully. Went to a jewelery store having forgotten my ring was tungsten. My ring dulled their cutting tool without taking a scratch. This saved me the horrible trouble of getting back into shape! cracked after 20 seconds of trying.

Great video - my wife was worried about this very issue. She was concerned that if I was in a car accident or something and injured my finger that the doctors wouldn't be able to get it off since it's so tough. Great explanation and great results. Thank you for posting this!

Very cool. I've been told by a couple of jewellers that nothing could be done to get the ring off if anything happened. Nice little trick.

No, the material must have a nil ductility transition temperature above body temperature.

Thanks! I was told this type of ring was more dangerous! on the otherhand, it is unlikely to bend into a finger like a gold one could if slammed in a door!

@azuldiablo08 apparently not, I know of someone who spent a night in A&E trying all manner of cutting tools without success, they eventually used the above method to remove it.

Or a good quality vice - easier to control. Put put a plastic bag around to collect the pieces. Yeah really impressive that many think tungsten rings are so indestructable that they're unbreakable. As you see that's not the case. It might be stuck so it cannot get off without damage but cracking it isn't that hard with right tools (don't use a hammer! :D). Tungsten carbide is brittle and inflexible like glass albeit tougher and harder. That's why it keep up so good in everyday wear and tear.

"Tungsten carbide" is the hardest material ever to be used in jewelry creation. Pretty sure diamonds are harder, but if we're discounting gemstones, titanium carbide is still slightly harder than tungsten carbide.

a jeweler's diamond saw will take care of it just as well and will not cut you, just the same as the saw used to remove casts from broken bones.

Soap won't work if your finger/joint is swollen. So who is the moron? I would hate to be the poor sod that comes by you in this situation. Luckily it won't be me or anyone who watches this video.
