EMERGENCY! Hopper Bay Opens on a Moving Coal Train!

Ойын-сауық

An eastbound Union Pacific train hauling coal for Omaha Public Power in Omaha, Nebraska hits it's brakes hard around 6:15 PM on February 27, 2018, just west of Schuyler, NE. The train stoped after the crew noticed that one of the bay doors on a coal hopper had opened and was dumping coal onto the tracks. The train was only stopped for about ten minutes; the conductor went back and closed the door and they went to *set out the car on a siding.
*I'm assuming they set the car out. Once they started moving again, they didn't go very fast, so my guess is that they put the car with the problem on a siding in Schuyler.
Power: Union Pacific AC44CW 7206, UP ES44AC 8027, UP AC4460CW 7045, and UP AC4460CW 7325

    Standard length of trains is 130-135 cars which is about 7200-7500 feet long. I was a conductor on the BNSF out of Alliance NE. The longest train we had was 150 cars right around 10K feet in length.

    Nothing quite like the sound of hundreds of breaks grinding during an emergency stop, wild stuff. I always wondered what would happen if a hopper dumped during transit.

    After watching a couple of times, I don't think he went into full emergency. Dumping the air can cause more problems then it solves. He had the ability to set brakes from both front and rear ends of the train and I think that is what he did.

    Agreed, there was no air pop so he most likely just set it to "continuous suppression" to get it stopped as quick as he could without going in to emergency braking. Glad someone in the cab was paying attention to what was going on behind them, big kudos to them!

    Everyone chill out, coal hoppers do this once in a while and it's not an emergency. The doors don't swing low enough to hit the rail, the malfunctioning car will be set out and repaired by a carman. Eventually either the railroad or a contractor will come out and clean up the spilled coal.

    I'd say the engineer was watching the train behind him after passing through the grade crossing, either because that's the rules, to watch it until it's clear, or because he saw the people standing there, or both, and so he just happened to see the coal come out. He was a lot closer to it than the camera was, and he may have seen the exact same thing happen before, so he didn't panic, he just put on full, but not emergency, brakes to bring to it a stop to clear the problem up (and to avoid strewing the coal along more track than he needed to; I doubt coal could easily derail a train. Which is not to say it couldn't happen, just not very likley)

    Kel Harper I'm not exactly sure how the engineer knew to stop; he probably was looking back or looking in the rear view mirror. I doubt that the coal could derail a train as well, so they probably stopped just so they wouldn't loose any more. Thanks for watching!

If you figure 119 tons per car then a 170 car train would be 20230 tons + 4 X 215 = 21090 tons of train. These cars have dumping gates and equipment so most of the coal cars I see are the bathtub gons and can carry slightly more load than these.

    Somehow seeing all that mass coming to such a violent standstill never ceases to amaze me. I have been in a passenger train once that was at it's top speed of 86 miles per hour when an air hose came lose. I usually "sleep" (I close my eyes, but keep paying attention to my surroundings) on trains that I take regularly, but upon hearing the loud thumb and then a huge hissing noise combined with a fast decrease in speed "woke" me up instantly. I was facing in the direction the train was moving and was gliding out of my seat when that happened. When the train came to a very abrupt halt (cars swinging back and forth for a couple of seconds) I could smell the brakes :P.

    Hehe, it's actually in my reply to the video, but yea, an air hose came lose (which has the same result as using the emergency brake). At the moment the emergency brake was applied I was expecting a shock to go through the cars or hear a loud bang (even though I was almost always at the back of that train, because that was easier at the terminal station.) It's the same thing with hearing a train use it's horn for the first time and then for a second time (using the horn is only allowed to avert a possibly dangerous situation in The Netherlands, like someone sitting on the edge of a platform unaware of the oncoming train).

    Wow, really? You aren't even _allowed_ to use the horn in the Netherlands? In the US they are mandated to blow the horn at every grade crossing by law. Which is good, seeing as how many people don't pay any attention at all and try to cross in front of trains, even when there are crossing barriers and lights and bells. I say let evolution take its course! =/ Of course in Europe they probably also have fool-proof barriers on every single grade crossing to prevent anyone from even trying to cross in front of a train. Got to save the stupid people from themselves. What else is government for? Interesting the cultural differences between regions, and the ways they manifest themselves. I was amazed when I first realized that locomotives in Britain didn't have headlights (not sure about now). You mean they just drive in the dark without any light? But then I thought "well, odds are they wouldn't be able to stop fast enough to avoid anything anyway", and the British seem to prefer to spend all their money designing barriers and track systems that make it impossible for anything to get onto the track. And they say that it's good to have night vision, better than to have a headlight, especially with how dim the lights were back then. As for stopping in time to avoid an obstacle, it's even less likely on British trains, since they only carried brakes on the locomotive and a single brake van: another thing that shocked me. In the US the idea of running a train without lights and with only two brakeable units in the whole train would abhor people. I guess because it would be a lot more dangerous driving that way on a typical US railway, especially back 150 years ago.

  • @Dutch3DMaster

    @Dutch3DMaster

    6 жыл бұрын

    Kel Harper Horn usage is allowed, but only to test if the horn is working or to warn someone who is to close to the edge of the platform or near or on the tracks (last thing usually only happens with people committing suicide, actually). I think the reason we are not allowed to use the horn here is because people pay attention quite well, and you are taught to do so from a very young age on. In primary school we were visited by personel from the national railway company to teach us a few things about safety around train tracks and crossings. Trains also run at a much higher speed than they usually do in the US, it's not uncommon to have a train cross a crossing at 86 mph (top speed for non-high speed trains), which gives you about 15-20 seconds from the moment the bells start ringing and the lights start to flicker before the train arrives. People know because of that not to try and cheat death (well in most cases that is). I'm absolutely sure British trains have headlights and have had them for years and also that every car has brakes. Also, in my opinion, overusing the horn like they do in the US could very well have the opposite effect, people hear it all the time and stop paying attention because of it. KZread user weeardguy made a video how the constant horn usage would sound in The Netherlands, you can look it up on his channel if you'd like. I agree about the cultural differences though, I can recall a couple of clips from Dutch railroad crossings that were visited by American You tubers who were absolutely astonished to see a train pass the crossing at high speed without using it's horn one time.

    Hold shit, that's a lot longer than I thought it was. What was that, 200+ cars? Amazing to think that all that time it took to build up to speed, all the energy that those engines produced to bring all those hundreds of tons up to 40mph, that was the same amount of energy that was created and absorbed by the brake pads as heat when the train stopped, but in the course of like 30 seconds instead of 4 minutes. You could probably heat a house for a whole winter off the heat generated by that stopping train.

    This is most likely what happened, I can't tell you how many times unloading high-speed ballast trains that the railroad would get local reports that our train was on fire. Hell I've even had MOW say the train was on fire b/c they weren't close enough to see that we were dumping rock. With what appears to be a barely cracked door I'msure the engineer looked back, saw "smoke", said holy $#@! and slammed the brakes.

  • @dochutto

    I did not see the conductor walk back to the leaking car, it is very unlikely that he even knew about the leak. The signal was probably not favorable and the engr applied a full service brake application, the DPUs applied train brakes at the same time enabling a good stop, although the trains brakes sounded as though they were in full emergency. This coal car is a leaker, there was an air pocket from previous leaking and the heavy braking caused the coal to fall further down, leaving a small pile on the track. One door does not open on these air dump cars, they all dump at the same time and for safety's sake the crew likely did not have the main reservoir hose hooked up, we never did.

    Most places use rotary dumpers now. They can't be sorting out the train by which cars are rotary and which are side dump, it's easier just to fit them all with rotary couplers and dump them all the same. You can rotary dump a car fitted with side-dump or bottom-dump hoppers, but not vice versa. No sense in scrapping the cars just because rotary is more popular, and this way they can be sorted out and used for jobs that don't have rotary dumpers when needed.

  • @kelharper7971

    @kelharper7971

    6 жыл бұрын

    When pulling from the front, about 150 cars is the maximum, depending on the terrain. Any more than that, and the couplers will just pull out, or you'll pull the train right off the rails in a curve (because you are pulling a very heavy train with a lot of power at the front). If you put engines in the middle or behind, you can get 200-250 cars, because you basically are running two trains connected together. As long as you have 3-4 average locomotives per 100 cars, there is no real limit to how long a train can be, provided the locomotives are divided down the length of the train and not all pulling from the front. The real limit is yards and sidings; where are you going to stop a train 5 miles long, or pull out of the way for another train? It's not practical. And of course, people who have to stop for grade crossings already feel annoyed at having to wait for 120 cars. Try making them wait for 500. But literally speaking there is no limit to how long a train can be, as long as each hundred cars has enough engines to pull it. But of course, a train that long would take a very long time to remove the brakes, because you'd have to pump up the brake reservoirs and brake line in the entire train. That can already take ten minutes for a long train; if you had cars with leaky hoses, you might not even be able to pump up the brake line enough to remove the brakes on a train 500 cars long, unless you had the compressors in all the locomotives working together. Real answer, in the real world, 200 cars is the realistic limit, usually closer to 100. You might find longer trains, but not by much, and not very often, and only in special cases, like Australia, where it's big and flat and straight.

    Not really. I don't see much sign of the wheels sliding, just a very brisk stop. The squealing is the brake pads on the tires, and if the wheels are still spinning, then they probably are sliding. Even if they are sliding, the fact that they are turning will make sure that the wear is distributed around the tire, not creating a flat spot. Same idea as ABS brakes, in a way. As long as the wheels don't lock up, you're okay. Both because sliding creates flat spots and wears the rail, but also because sliding friction is actually lower than static friction, and it will take longer for the train to stop. Which is exactly why they use ABS on cars (that and you lose all steering once the tires start sliding).

    I will say that here's one excellent reason to always park on the _near_ side of the track when doing something like this. You don't want to have to walk all the way around a train to get home! I that happen once when I was walking somewhere, and I was seriously contemplating climbing under one of the cars to get to my vehicle. If I hadn't had my dog with me, I might have done it. I figure there is no way the train could start moving fast enough that I wouldn't be able to move, even if by some terrible chance he started just as I was crawling under it. But I didn't, I walked back up the road again, and he moved in another ten minutes. But he could have been there for 3 hours for all I knew, and then I don't know what I'd have done, expect try to walk around it. Which would technically be trespassing! Bastards.
