What is happening? I could be doing anything productive, but I choose to sit & watch Otto fix a drive shaft? Why? What compells me to watch this? I'll never own a boat. I'll never need shaft repair knowledge. It seems I got addicted to the problem solving skills of Otto Kilcher. I can't get enough of this wise crackin' wise man. The skill of one can help so many via KZread. Keep it coming. Thumbs up! I wanna see what project comes next.

I've never made it up to Alaska but it's always had a special place in my heart. My oldest brother lived up there for many years he owned a nice house outside Soldotna he was the Captain of a long liner fishing vessel on the Bearing sea for many years. We still have the videos he used to send home I remember always being really worried about him some of the videos out there were just wicked waves and weather. He ended up getting a divorce from his wife and they moved out of Alaska. He moved to Wyoming and then remarried and started driving semi for the fracking fields. And on one of his days off he was driving his pickup down the interstate and blew a front tire his truck rolled several times and he lost his life. That was 6 years ago now he was only 57 at the time the same age I will be this August. Sure miss him. Sorry for the long story but every time I see fishing vessels or anything about Alaska I always think of my brother

@OttoKilcher (a.k.a. Red Green - I.Y.K.Y.K,) THANK YOU! Thank you for taking us along on these wonderful adventures. You truly are someone I could call neighbor and be proud to have as a neighbor, and I do not say that lightly nor glibly. It's sad, but most people will never get to experience or understand how those who live in Alaska are a different breed, in a very good way, from the rest of America. Alaskans know that they need to rely on their fellow Alaskans to survive and sustain year round. I miss living in Alaska. I wish I had never left, and I most definitely want to go back. It's the only place that EVER felt like home. It's also sad that Discovery never showed this part on Alaska: The Last Frontier. The true reality of daily life on an Alaskan Homestead. There surely would have been more viewers if this part of Alaskan life had been shown on the show.

Check the fit and face of the coupling..? Never mind you’re checking now. Could it be an out of balance prop? Damn you never cease to amaze with your ingenuity. we do a lot of that here in Maine, we call it ” Yankee ingenuity” but facing an engine coupling in the boat… you’re a machine! I once had do drill a 2” stainless rudder stock with the boat in the water I used one of those magnet mounts and a go pro articulating tri-pod to hold my jury rigged oiler. Took two days of drilling and went through half a dozen Wal*Mart pillows and a stack of oil-sorb pads.. -Born in AK live in ME

"OK" work, as usual, Otto! I have to wonder how much deflection you would see in that shaft with all of those variables in play while it was in the boat (although probably impossible physically). .003 in the shaft, and whatever each flange was off, over a 12' length at X RPM. I don't know much about boats, but I have to assume that the RPM of that shaft is 'relatively' low with a 12' span length and no center supports. And another thing to note that I was curious about is how much the deflection would have changed at each end had the rollers been situated at the points where the deflection was the highest. Also, I would have liked to have seen the deflection measured along the shaft with the rollers being right at the ends, as close as possible to how it was when installed in the boat. Great content as always, Otto! Looking forward to more! -Dusty
