Emerald Square Mall in North Attleboro, MA: Built to 90’s specs; three floors of emptiness- Haunting

I will attempting to add time stamps to this dead mall video with notes, but can’t at this time. If I can re-edit, re-upload without a copyright strike I will.

    @@dailygrindkid yeah that’s definitely not the point of the video. There’s obviously lots of great stores still here and reasons to come here. The mall is capable of housing nearly double what is currently occupied at the moment, and the mall already has propositions to repurpose it to apartments etc. If we don’t document what it is now, we may not have a chance to do so in the future when things are torn down/demolished. This is not an insult to any business still there/thriving

    It's haunting to see the empty arcade room. Should be filled with children. I lived 5 minutes away from the Emerald Square growing up and would go with my Mom easily once, sometimes twice a week. We'd have our Mother/Daughter Dates on Friday nights, look around- always stop at Claire's to pick out something cute! :) Special memories. Thank you so much for making this video, SO much nostalgia!

    Excellent video and walk through. I especially enjoyed the time you took to take a peek in the closed, dark spaces so we could take a guees as to who was the former tenant. Most dead mall veterans simply run through the place with some history, but your approach was to present this mall as someone just passing through to remember the good old days. Your work helps preserve this time of retail in America, which has sadly passed. Bravo, and thank you!!

    22:10 - I remember, so many years ago, growing up just over the bridge in Pawtucket my friends and I would come here on Friday nights after school in the early 2000's. There used to be a line of booths here along the windows. So many times we'd look out and find the cars of people we knew. It makes me very sad to see what's become of the mall now, post covid and how poorly the local government has handled business growth compared to other states. I was last there in October 2022, it looks like it's only gotten worse since then.

    Thanks for filming this mall, I used to go here sometimes when I was younger. I remember the mall having soooo many stores/restaurants and being busy. Even 10 years ago, it was doing quite well. Simon properties owned this mall from I think 1998 or 99 until the fall of 2020. I heard stories that the rent in this mall was very high, thus why many businesses opted to leave, even before the pandemic. You know it's bad when a Dunkin leaves a mall, they had one in the food court. I think Simon Properties is partially to blame for the mall's downfall, along with of course the changes to how people shop/go out. Unlike many of the properties owned/managed by Simon, they never seemed to care about Emerald Square. On top of the high rent, they never did any upgrades to the property and let things fall apart. Then they abruptly left the ownership in the fall of 2020. It was then managed by JLL (Jones Lang Lasalle) until Sept. 2022, when Kohan Retail Investment group bought the mall. Let's hope this once great destination makes a comeback! One last thing, does anyone remember a carousel being in the food court? I certainly do but when I told my parents, they didn't remember.

  • @theconfusingwords

    @theconfusingwords

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for sharing all of this! I’m hoping to go back and check on it again soon. I’ve been told that Kohan is not the best with malls, putting it in not such good hands…. But this mall is truly beautiful, with nice finishes, I’d love to see it make a comeback. It was THE mall back in the day. If a Dunkin leaves a food court, that is truly a bad sign. Lol. But Simon has been neglecting many locations particularly over the past five years. If you’ve ever been to the Greendale Mall, that was among the worst. It was hard to believe anyone was managing it at all. Such a shame. I’ll keep rooting for the mall!

    Like a lot of people, I miss the malls. Yes, there have been gains for people as now we get things dropped off at our homes. But gone for the most part is trying on clothes before you buy them. All the money now goes to Amazon instead of being split up to many businesses. I am thankful Macys still is open although back in the day I seldom went there as I was primarily a patron of Felines and Sears. I miss Sears so much. I knew they were all but dead when Black & Decker acquired the Craftsman brand from Sears in 2017. It was one of the main reasons I used to go to Sears. Clothes and tools, perfect for a guy like me. It’s all in the rear-view mirror now.

    You'd be surprised how long a mall can survive if they still have their anchor stores like Macy's, Dillard's, JC Penny, etc. Losing Sears was a big blow to most malls including the one I work at. The JC Penny was considering closing their store in our mall around the same time and mall management knew that if we lost 2 anchor stores the mall was doomed. Fortunately they didn't close down so we are still limping along. It's still only a matter of another 5 to 8 years before it will be abandoned.

    End stage capitalism at its finest. Empty malls are just a symptom that retail as we all knew it is dead and gone for good and it ain't coming back. With so much invested money at stake having been spent to build these now-empty airplane hangers, it's no wonder that bankers and companies paying extravagant rents in office buildings are freaking out that employees sent home to work from home in 2020 have no interest in having to go back to working in an office. The internet has made the notion of cities and the need for shopping malls and high rise office buildings obsolete, and there's billions of dollars in real estate development going bust. I couldn't be any happier than I am for the greed class that stands to lose millions if not billions of dollars in the next great commercial real estate crash. Think of it as their reward for being the blood-sucking landlords they were while their malls were booming. Like I said, I couldn't be happier.
