Never😄! Ojukwu is NOT a coward by any metric. Most Nigerians are not very well read. It is not uncommon to find Nigerians talking about matters they know nothing about. Just pure sentimental nonsense. OJUKWU IS A NIGERIAN HERO. He saw the problem of northern domination and proposed a confederal structure to remedy the problem. The Yorubas are very tribalistic and servile. So they follow their leaders blindly even to their own peril. southern leaders know the truth but are unwilling to speak cuz of their lust for power. The constitution of the country is dangerously demonic. Restructuring and a new constitution are the only things that can save Nigeria. The first “coup” was not a “coup” but a revolution. It was A revolution for the soul of the country. Sadly, it did not stand. Ojukwu like many other powerful Nigerians at the time, saw the problem of northern domination. However, he was the only one who had the guts to do something about it. Sadly, he failed in the attempt. The yorubas were a divided house at the time, and fell under the control of the north. The Yoruba to this day, remains a stooge of the powerful northern houses.

He was not a good man. He played on the desperate need for freedom of the Igbo people for what ever sick reason. He enjoyed privilege. Why didn't he use his wealth to encourage education and form good business links for Igbo states? Why war? I really have no good words for that man and the same evil spirit is in Nnamdi Kanu who is willing to shed the blood of Igbo people again by deceiving people that it will work. Igbos were being killed all over Nigeria and the elders in Igbo land sanctioned secession; he was the de facto leader and had to be the face of the cause, and he did the best he could - the Igbos only found out that not only were they hated in Nigeria, but just like the Israelites, there are international and supernatural forces against their self determination. Whether that was because of oil or because of a general fear of Igbo ingenuity, the civil war was inevitable and might I remind you, Ojukwu had no part in the coup of January, 1966. He was just a child of destiny! As for him being a coward for running away, would you rather escape a lost cause to fight another day or remain foolhardy and die like a chicken? Let us not be self-righteous. Nnamdi Kanu is but a consequence of the injustices that not only the Igbos have faced, but every other tribe or ethnic group that's been held back by the unholy matrimony between Northern and Southern Nigeria (which in my opinion includes the middle belt); if restructuring is not done to salvage the situation and allow each region practice self-governance in a Confederacy, Nigeria would only head inevitably to another civil war and when that time comes Biafra would prevail whether anyone likes it or not. I feel that Gowon spoke then as a young man, but God allowed Gowon to be alive powerless and moving around with his Nigeria Prays, and witnessing the present day Massacre of people of plateau State, meanwhile the Igbos Gowon soldiers killed recovered and are obviously the richest tribe in Nigeria through hard work while Northern Nigeria remains the poorest and most insecure region of Nigeria simply because Gowon didn't implement Aburi Accord and went to war against the Igbos. Ojukwu remains the Greatest Igboman that lived in Modern History. A leader with foresight more than Gowon. Nigeria is now trying to agree to accept Aburi Accord 55years later. You are right. They both waste humans lives to settle personal scores. Years later they embraced and wined and dined together. Ojukwu's rank was restored. His pension paid in full, and when he died, he received a full military honours. Those who fought for Biafra fought in vain, till date they have not got anything from the FG.

Ojukwu is not just a hero but a Great Hero. Even in his grave, he is still a Hero. Even in his grave, he is worth more than ten gowon. Gowon ended up as a slave who enslaved his people. Gowon shamefully ran far far away after he masterminded the killing of Gen. Muritala Muhammed.

My father, May he rest in peace was a Ghanaian very senior officer at the Aburi Accords.

Was there really a killing of the Igbo people in the North? If yes, then Ojukwu's decision is understandable. Why didn't he die? Because if he had died in the war, it would have given the enemy the biggest satisfaction and would have been the biggest shame of his people. That would have crushed the will of his people beyond repairs. He gave himself the chance to explain his actions. Everyone would have been in doubt of his decision if he didn't. Respect the man.

What would have broken or crushed the spirit of his people is if he had been captured and subjected to public disgrace and humiliation not if he had chosen to stay back and fight to the death. That would have earned him the highest of respect from the so-called enemy. All of that giving himself the chance to explain as an excuse to run away goes further to confirm his cowardice. If he had had respect for word power in resolving conflicts he would have been diplomatic in his language and will insist on a diplomatic resolution to the conflict no matter what and wouldn´t have allowed the situation to escalate into an all-out war. There are so many other indications of his character during the war that reveals he was a coward but wouldn´t be necessary to bring them up here at least not for now.

They even flew to Aburi Ghana (the aburi accord) where he listed his demands. Which Gowon agreed on then backpedalled as soon as he returned to Nigeria. Ojukwu had no option than to declare independent states of Biafra. Ojukwu a coward? He fought Nigeria for 3 years! Ojukwu has 10× more balls than any Nigerian General, dead or alive! The Govt turned a deaf ear to all entreaties to protect Igbo residents being murdered and lynched in the North particularly Sabon Gari. Same Govt led by Gen Gowon turned a deaf ear and refused to honour the settlement reached during Aburi Accord. You want him to stay and give Gowon the last laugh when every other means of support from food to weapons have all collapsed. Go and read up the 'Act of War'. The most known war commander either commit suicide or go on exile. If you don't want you can form your own history, but just know that 1969 and 2023 has about 54 years in between.

This is typical of how Igbos present their case ever de4sperate to draw sympathy to themselves making others look like brute savages out to get the superior Igbo tribe. While the massacre of the Igbos was going on in the north the northerners were also being killed in the east. The number of Igbos killed was more because of the Igbos' mentality of settling in large numbers on others' territory to exploit them economically. If it could be argued that the Igbos have been enjoying a peaceful settlement in the north for a long time before the unfortunate political incident that led to their being massacred in large numbers then you will be shooting yourself in the leg if you want to make it look like the Igbos were innocent of what led to it. The fact remains that the first military coup was led by a majority of young Igbo military officers who killed top political leaders both in the north and in the west and failed to kill any from their part of the country. Any reasonable person from anywhere in the world would have seen that it was an Igbo coup except for the Igbos. And not only was Ojukwu a coward he was also a bad military commander and here is why. You see all the nonsense you talked about military rules in warfare that dictate a leader should run or commit suicide doesn´t hold any water because they were perceptions of humans not natural. Naturally in any combat, you assess the strength of your enemy against yours, and if it is overwhelming like it was against the Biafran then you will be not only suicidal but also foolish to commit your side to a military confrontation because the outcome is already programmed. What a good commander will do will be to hide behind a fortress which in this case is a diplomatic fortress so long it takes you to consolidate your strength and position. If you are a Christian you must have heard God being referred to as the Rock Of Ages. That´s because being under God offers you sanctuary from the devil because only a fool confronts the devil directly. It takes being in a position of AUTHORITY to be able to confront and defeat the devil otherwise you will be defeated. That´s why it is not really military might that wins wars but rather wisdom, understanding, and knowledge and that was exactly the case with the Nigerian civil war. What really brought the Igbos to their knees was the Blockade idea, not the superior military might of the Nigerian Army. People start dying of hunger and malnutrition mostly children which is another aspect of the war that reveals Ojukwu for who he really was a coward and a bad military commander. Now tell me how many of Ojukwu's immediate family members die of kwashiorkor, malnutrition, and others? How many of the top Biafran top military commanders of the war and their immediate family dies of the effect of the blockade? I´m sure they all had more than enough to eat and drink while the people they were leading were starving to death. Shouldn´t he as a commander have taken the possibility of that happening into account and taken the path of diplomacy instead? And while that was going on shouldn´t he have thrown in the towel to save his people before it got to the deadly stage he allowed it to spiral into? That was a cowardly act on his part so believe it or not he is accountable and responsible for the death of those not others.

@Julian Azubike Look, I am not saying Odumegwu Ojukwu is a bad man. I consider him a passionate leader, one who would be described as "a man of the people, for the people". However, it is wrong to dismiss the fact that he was wrong in his approach to " freedom" for his people. Odumegwu Ojukwu ran away! Because he knew the consequences of what would befall him for what he had done. Yet, people died, people fought, and people suffered, for a cause a majority of them knew nothing about. All I'm saying is if Ojukwu knew he could no longer lead the movement (obviously) he could have stopped it, rather than let millions of innocent civilians die. It's not befitting of a leader.

It's a good thing that this generation is rapidly coming to the truth of the whole matter. The biafran war was not fought by the Nigerian army against the igbos; it was a war fought by the world against a nation that would have led to the total liberation of the African people. Gowon was and is still a puppet of the colonial cabal. He deserves no honour. Ojukwu is not only a genius; he is an all time hero. He did the right thing.

It is true that the 1966 coup d'état basically led to the civil war. Ojukwu was a hero! It is true that he left for exile when Biafra fell. But, he did the logical thing to get his people out from an area where they were being massacred, and nothing was being done by the government of Gen. Gowon to prevent the inhumane massacre, and suffering of the Igbos, and other minority tribes living in the North. Any sensible person would have done the same thing Ojukwu did. Tribe regardless, you don't kill innocent and unarmed people, and expect someone in a position to rescue them to be silent about it. That is evil, it doesn't work like that. No one should blame Ojukwu. Pure and simple. God is so great that he is still keeping most of the key players of the civil war alive to say exactly what happened. That is when Nigeria will embrace 'reconciliation'. But, they insist on playing the game of chess and unnecessary ego.

I agree that the Igbos, Yoruba and other tribes were marginalized by the Northerners this was the plan of the British anyways to keep the north in power so they can keep taking our resources. so many people died so many lives perished all because of what?? The tussle for power Ojukwu knew that Biafra wasn't ready for war they didn't have the logistics, they didn't have enough arms Biafra wasn't equiped even when the Nsuka university boys insisted for war he could have explained to them the consequences of war, because of him my people died may the souls continue to RIP IJN he couldn't even fight to the end instead he ran away💔 I just can't comprehend what was truly on his mind, He wasn't a visionary leader, He wasn't a master strategist, He didn't submit to the spirit of God for guidance and knowledge. The war was driven by ego and opportunistic goal, indiscipline by the army, pride and vengeance. Ojukwu should have sacrificed himself on behalf of the millions of Easterners killed by federal govt policies. Rather than return to Nigeria on the platform of a northern political party to pursue agenda of those he had fought against He is no hero, just an opportunist

What were the conflicts that were not resolved? Who assured the Igbo’s of safety in the north before they began their journey back and over 30k of them paid with their lives. And please don’t tell Nzeogwu was an Igbo man because he is not.

At Aburi what happened? Who refused to implement what was agreed? Who brought war to the poor people Gowon on talked about? What did you do to help that same poor people you talked about? Where is Gowon?

No, General Ojukwu never had been a coward, but fighting with all his virtues to defend the rights and lives of his Eastern regions peoples. In fact the one General Gowon who declared the police action was the coward whose the resultant issues of that brutal war perished three million Easterners and thousands of the federal troops, that brutal war turned Nigeria into anarchy where now till today, no Igbo man or Eastern person can invade the presidency through an election. I do think Gowon is honest at all about that war, even though he goes about conducting prayers, in that Gowon has not apologized nor ask forgiveness for his brutal war, that he said was civil. But Ojukwu did apologize and even General Philip Effiong did also.

What as Nigerians achieve what ojukwu was fighting for is still happening today ojukwu is my hero i love him. Now 2021 after BIAFRA it is ODUDUWA nation so sone thing is wrong with NIGERIA

Ego centric war that was aimed at serving the personal interests of some persons. Sadly, some people were made to think it was a was for their liberation. Eventually, when and where the main actors sat down and shared glasses of expensive wine to reconcile their differences, the gullible masses knew nothing. It's just a pity for a country.

I think Ojukwu should not be judged harshly by history considering the shenanigans by officers of the Nigerian Army at the time. His conciliatory tones fell on deaf ears. After considering his own educational background he decided to match the effrontery of soldiers who had put the country in jeopardy. Let us not forget, oil and gas, which sustain the Nigerian economy were at stake, along the interests of other foreign powers and that was a tall order, for one region to fight against; 75% of the country. It my view that when countries face irreconcilably differences they must opt out for a political stratagem which would benefit all concerned. Until very recently, there were no Generals in the Nigerian Army of Igbo origin until a famous TV station pointed out the height of discrimination suffered by Igbos in Nigeria. Countries want to hold to other regions without the benefit of economic resources to that region and the ghost of Biafra may rear up its head in some part of the world.

I’m a Yoruba man, Ojukwu is an Hero, Obafemi Awolowo is the coward. If Obafemi didn’t side and form alliance with the Hausa people, everyone will have their independent and be friendly neighbor by now. But the will of Obafemi Awolowo to stay in power didn’t let him see the bigger future.

He was a COWARD! He started a war the led to the deaths of millions of Nigerians knowing he can't win it. He biggest blunder was forcing minority tribes into his agitations. People choose ignore the fact that Biafrans soldiers wasted lives of minority tribes especially in Agenebode(Edo) who chose not to be part of their agitations.

Listen very carefully Mr Ademola, Ojukwu will remain a hero in the eyes of his people. A true son who personified what his people believed in. He sounded the Igbo drum loud and clear, he dared to challenge the norm, he had laid the foundation for the identity of the igbos. Today every Igbo man knows that they had the courage to fight against oppression in the past. They can fight against oppression tomorrow. That was the greatest achievement. If other people in Nigeria cannot, the Igbo can and will.

Igbos don't care if he is a boss. The problem of dictatorship is complex. He is leading his people out of marginalization, whether it is done as a democrat or as a commander that is not the point now. Igbos are looking up to a person who can pull them away from bundage. Stop crying more than the bereaved, you are not an Igbo man.

The Nigerian civil war aka Biafran war was an unfortunate incident that happened in the course of history. Formerly, I blamed Ojukwu for the occurrence of the war, bit now that I made some findings about the root causes, I get to understand that the Igbos were marginalized and even the Yorubas by the hausas in the army. Anyway, I pray such war or civil unrest should never happen again because of the innocent people at the bottom of it all
