He couldn't listen to the wise Baldwin IV. All that blood shed could have been avoided and Jerusalem would have been kept. You can hear in his voice when he says, "So be it", that he knew that Jerusalem would fall after his passing, but also he knew that God was willing it. He could find solace in knowing he did everything with wisdom ordained from God to lead people the best he could. Best King ever.

Definitely would’ve saved a lot of bloodshed and the kingdom but Balian turning it down made a great plot for the movie 🔥

So by denying his Kingdom, he actually did what the King taught him. He listened to his conscious even if it cost him everything knowing God would be the ultimate Judge. Amazing.

If you haven’t seen the movie, the reason he says no to marrying Sybella (Baldwins sister) isn’t because of anything that would happen to Jerusalem. He wouldn’t do it because it would’ve been a death sentence to sybellas current husband. Balian (Orlando bloom) didn’t want to be the direct cause of someone’s death or murder, even if it was sanctioned by the king. So he refused.

But sybella's husband in movie deserve to be killed because he is criminal he killed many people. But this man made many mistakes by his unwise decision, one is he aid in escaping a criminal from execution(he didn't kill him second time too), 2nd his kingdom lost, many innocent people were dead because of his unwise decision. A criminal life is worth of 1000s of innocent lives? No , not at all .

You have to admire Balian. He loves the kings sister but doesn't act on it due to her being married and won't be the cause of her husband's death. The movie is so charged that I love the fact they have so many moments like this where Balian uses the things he is taught and applies them to his life as closely as he can. Especially the Latin quote he translates; "As we are, so shall you be".

He’s a blacksmith, a mere civilian of no noble blood/ancestry, making him at best Consort to the Queen, Baldwins sister. In the realm of man, where the bad often outweigh the good, women are either to be feared and eventually punished and executed, or used as a tool for their benefit. After Baldwin died, his sister was married off to the French Templar, and look where that got Jerusalem. War was inevitable in such a place, where relics of old drove men mad into doing countless atrocities for their “so-called” gods. Baldwin was king because he was made to be, chosen to be King, not by choice. The Blacksmith is a man free of choice, able to be anything he wants, yet follows his heart into what’s just and noble, following his father’s footsteps. He knew that Jerusalem was burning long before the day of siege and saved himself the burden. All others lives were forfeit, often by the choices and decrees of old men with titles and power, corruption and vanity disguised by pretty religious aesthetics. There was nothing he could have done, whether he was consort or as the man he played out throughout the story; the Muslims (unfortunately) were going to take over by force. He followed the wisdom of Baldwin, as well as his heart and good nature, not power or want for nobility, for he was a man! A true man, of conscience.

Maybe the reason why Balian refused Baldwin's request is because Christian kings of Jerusalem had a history of violence under the guise of "God's Will". Throughout the film, Balian is told that Christians sought Jerusalem because it's what God wants. In reality, taking Jerusalem was just a snack to feed the ego of men. It was never about what God wants, but it was about the glory, gold, privilege, and honor of murdering those who don't have the same faith as you. Should Balian be king, in whatever way that makes it possible, there's a chance he would make the same decisions of the previous Kings, decisions that lead to violence. He would be pressured by the Pope, as well as other royalties who would want the Holy Land. There will never be another Baldwin IV, no man who is brave and honest enough to seek for true peace with the Muslims. So, Balian refuses. Just an idea though.
