Thanks Celine. I hadn't thought or used Shrink Film in a long time either, but I love how easy it is to do in this little pancake maker. It was too much trouble before, and now it's super easy and fun!

to check grain: Cut two items of the same size and shape...draw arrows on them each one different direction .top to bottom, side to side. also put the same marks on your remaining sheet so you can identify which way it will elongate next time and you can see which way your shrunken pieces elongate. Luck all around.

If you put it directly in the bottom without the paper, you would have to wait until it cooled down entirely to take it out. This way you can take out the paper to cool and move to the next one. Also, if any of the ink sticks to the bottom, it would not be on a disposable paper, but have to be wiped out of the machine (And perhaps not noticed until it gets on your next thing)

That was such fun to see all the different things you can do with that pancake maker. I like to work at night and for embossing that would be great because I can't use by embossing gun then. That bee came out very nice.

Most shrink film will shrink more in one direction than the other so the final oval shape is normal for the material

This is so cool! A few days ago I watched another KZread experimenting with the mini pancake maker with the shrink film and all kinds of die cuts. She had seen Marion’s KZread as well and I then watched hers too….amazing! Of course I had to buy a mini pancake maker to try it out. I noticed you had embossed Devid’s feather die from his new ECD collection and that is one I had planned on embossing in my mini pancake maker. I was hoping to have tried this out already but I just haven’t had a chance. It looks so fun! I loved your multicolored bee….that was my favorite too! Thanks so much for sharing this super cool way of embossing and using shrink foil…love it! 🥰

I feel like the entire crafting community is going to end up with a mini pancake maker in their craft room once this catches on. I have only seen one other crafter and Marion doing this. YES! That's exactly what I thought. I had the melting pot years ago and had fun experimenting with that too. This method is much neater and easier clean-up.

Back in the day we used sandpaper on the shrink plastic to get the matte look and help the colors stick better

Some years ago, I stumbled on the info that #6 plastic can be shrunk (a lot of my grocery and lunch containers were #6 - look for the number embossed into the plastic). But I also learned that, unlike shrinky dinks (and you can still get them), the plastic for containers would get stretched more in one direction than another, and that it "remembers" this when you shrink it, leading to uneven shrinkage. I saw people drawing rulers on the #6 horizontally and vertically and then shrinking to see how it would change size in each direction. I suspect the plastic you were using might shrink differently in different directions - you could do the ruler test to see. This wouldn't be as obvious for other shapes, as it seems to be just a little off. Might be a totally different reason but I thought I'd mention this

Shrinky dink also would shrink in one direction more than the other, so we always considered that when using it. I had forgotten that until i saw her oval.

I give Marion all the credit for this genius idea. I knew of the mini pancake makers and such, but would never have thought to use it in the craftroom this way. Isn't it fun to learn something new?!

Is this pancake maker trapping the piece in one area? If it's pinning down the plastic that might explain the oval shape? How big is the gap between the two plates? Is it exactly level? Maybe try putting parchment on top too, to keep the pieces flatter, then when you whip out the sandwich of parchment papers, you can press immediately on top to flatten it straight away, rather than wasting a few seconds trying to get paper on top to flatten, because it may be too cool already. You can probably flatten a ton of these at once between parchment by ironing them. In fact...you could do them in hair straighteners! 😳😳😳 Oooh I'm gonna experiment using my straighteners! Could probably melt embossing powder and shrink plastic too! 😲 Thanks for the ideas! 😁😁😁

I should be thanking YOU for the ideas! My pancake maker doesn't quite touch when the lid is closed, so I will have to try the method of putting a piece of parchment on top, then flattening while it's still warm. As for the oval, I suspect, as many viewers have, that there might be a grain to the shrink plastic, so I will have to do some more experimenting on that.

Card cutouts work good also.

Yes, I saw Els Van de Burgt use that in hers and since then, I have purchased a mat just for this purpose and am using it now. Works great!

Thank you for the amazing idea, I will definitely give it a try. Also, I think the circular shape didn't shrink circular due to uneven heat on the surface. Irregular shapes you don't notice it, but the places that have more heat shrink more and faster. When you apply patches with a regular iron, the heat is not the same as the one when you use a professional press iron. But I think the idea is great, if you don't say it, people wouldn't even notice that the shape is a little different. Thanks again. I subscribed. 😊

Girls, I do not have the experience as both of you, but I'm a very picky observer. My opinion about the irregular oval shrinking from the round original one depends on *what's in the interior* stamped on the circle due more ink in on side than the other. I'd try a plain circle or a mandala ( very regular + equidistant holes also!)stamp to check this feeling of mine. (Sorry for my second language English in order the explain myself🤦‍♀). Like tissues being called Kleenex, Shrinky dinks are a brand and shrink plastic is the type of product whatever the brand. Just heard of this and came here after seeing Els from Elizabeth Crafts use this method to shrink. I'm going to be looking into getting one of these little machines!

Shrink film has a grain of sorts meaning that it will tend to shrink more on one axis than the other, it's more noticeable on a circle than on other shapes. 🙂

I know. I'm not sure if it's the temperature or what, but you really can't overheat these if you watch your timer.

the person who said shrink plastic has a grain somewhat is right...but possibly your circle clung to the sheet you had it on...maybe a non stick base would help...this was a great shrinky info video...one of my favorite processes that you took to a completely different level.

Thanks great video - I am ordering the mini pancake maker.😊 Just a suggestion - maybe just pullout the parchment paper leaving the piece on that parchment paper and then use another parchment paper on top to push flat - will save time when still warm to get flat the shrink plastic flat?

Yep, you're exactly right. I started doing that and it works very well!

I heard a long time ago shrinks dinks days that there is a directional grain. One way cutting will show a different shape versus the other way. Hope I said that right.

Why couldn’t you punch a very small hole through the plastic once it’s shrunk?

It's quite small after shrinking (and thick) and my crop-a-dile is the only tool I own that could get through it, but even the smallest hole would be too big. That's why you should punch it first. Then the hold also shrinks. If I had a small drill, I think it would work, but not sure if it would be too brittle. Something to consider trying for sure.

What percentage of shrinking is there? Maybe 50%

The Shrink Film packaging says it shrinks to 20% original size. Quite a reduction!

I couldn't find one at the Walmart in Crescent City CA but I found a waffle maker😢😢😢

Hope you find one because I doubt the waffle maker is going to get the job done. LOL!
