Embarrassed about going to community college

If you decide to take the community college path, you may face some criticism... some embarrassment... some shame... maybe a combination of all 3.
But don't worry, I've also experienced these things as well.
I will tell you the mindset that you need to have in order to ignore these feelings and be a successful transfer.

I went to community college, transferred to a university, worked in industry for 4 years, went back to get my masters, and then returned to industry. I’m now in a career I love, while making more money and having far less debt than most people I know. Starting in cc is a solid choice and will save you thousands.

Only thing embarrassing about cc is the kids there that go there and act like it’s high school 2.0, always being loud and obnoxious in between classes. You can tell that they aren’t there for an actual education they are just there to hang out with friends and never go to class

To which community college are even attending to or have you went to? What gives you the right to misjudge community college students like that? Do you even know what most students go through? Let me tell you... as hardcore, as universities are, a proper community college is no less. The competition is fierce. Most of us, students attending cc are planning to transfer, and many of us don't have money to afford 4-year institutions so we are eyeing scholarships. Our honor societies require a 3.5 GPA to get in, and at least a 3.0 semester GPA to maintain membership. You think you would do good? I'm a 3.75 honor student transferring from a community college and I'm number 8 from a class of 900 students. I applied to the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship and ranked in the top 100s out of a pool of 1300 applicants. I was not even selected over three other students of my same institution. Am I mediocre? Am I a high school student 2.0? Come check the classes I've had living the life most of us have to live. I worked my a&& off for two years working 40 hours a week while taking care of children and going full time to school. Don't you dare to disrespect the honor and dignity of a community college student. There is nothing embarrassing or wrong about attending cc, the fact that it is 2021 and you still have those ignorant stigmas in your mind is baffling.

@Brandon Rhodes Let me quote it and break it down for you, "Only thing embarrassing about cc *is the kids there*" He didn't talk about cc students? Who did he talk about? Who are the kids? Please let me know, oh, mighty know-it-all student. He says the embarrassing thing about cc is the kids that go there, so who are the kids? The students, of course. To deepen into this then he says "...[the kids] that go there and act like it’s high school 2.0" what makes him say such thing? If he had said, "some community college students go there and don't perform" I would agree. Underperformers are everywhere. However, generalizing like he did is just deeply wrong and he deserved to get the answer he got. Why? Because as I stated before in my last comment, community college, like college in general, is no joke. You need a 3.5 GPA to belong into an honor society, and at least a 3.0 GPA to maintain membership. Honor courses (That I have taken 3 of those) require triple the amount of work in comparison to a regular course, and the GPA competition is fierce. Ivy League institutions rarely welcome transfer students (Princeton and Harvard are examples of this) and schools that offer a decent amount of scholarships nitpick on every single part of the student's transcript. The fact that after knowing such facts, you still feel you have the right to question the sacrifice and work it takes to a community college student to succeed academically and transfer, reveals your obnoxiousness and not to say your classicist, and deeply misinformed points of view. The fact that Mr. L feels that students that go to community college are nutcases "always being loud and obnoxious in between classes" it's also another misconception. There isn't anything wrong with creating a community and sticking together as long as we don't have class. One of the excellent upsides of community college is the facility students have to create or fit into many different communities that help us get involved in leadership. High school 2.0? Just because we're loud? You have never been to an honor student event and it shows. Also, you told me to stop coping and admit that my school isn't hard. Mr. L says community college students skip class the whole time, now I challenge you to show me your GPA, and let's compare accolades. Let's see if I, skipping class would have earned everything I accomplished. As for right now, I am a 2x presidential scholar, 1x honor roll student, 1x Dean's list scholar. I am also a Vice President for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter of my community college, and a Chair of the Honor student Affairs Committee serving as an administration Liason between PTK, SGA, and the administration of my college community. All of this while maintaining a 3.75 GPA, and after being selected as one of the three ONLY recipients in my state to have received the PepsiCo SMILE scholarship worth 25,000 a year. And have been selected as a semifinalist for the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship finishing up as a finalist in the top 100. I was awarded the Teachers Union Honors scholarship and belong in the top 10 of a class of 900 students. I have more achievements and accolades than your ignorant and belittling persona will ever accumulate, and I am just getting started. Stop coping, just admit you're a failure and that you need to belittle others to feel better about yourself. Seek therapy. Mic dropped.

I grew up in New England, MAAAASSIVE pressure to go to one of the ‘prestigious’ Schools, as others in my family did. But I looked and noticed the big Boston schools (Boston University, Northeastern, etc.) charge $60,000+ a year for tuition and fees. Cape Cod Community College, however, only wanted $500 a class…$500 A CLASS! I went there, commuted from home, earned my Associate of Science in IT with no debt, transferred to UMass Boston and only had a few semesters left to get a Bachelor’s. At my second graduation for my Bachelor’s Degree I was LESS than $20,000 in debt for everything academia related! And guess what happened next? I got a job at a good company just like everyone else, and now I work next to people who went to BU, Wentworth, Northeastern, etc. and they say “I wish I did what you did!” …and that folks, is all you need to know!

Went to a community college, took 4 years because I had to work at same time. I am now 60 have been working as a software engineer for 35 years. CC was the best route because I was able to hang out and work the computers inexpensively. I now see the young SE with $100k student loans and they can’t engineer or code very well, sure in a few years . But they didn’t have that sink or swim environment that turned me appreciate and focus.

But when I told him where I went he instantly shamed me and said I should’ve went or registered to GA Tech or KSU (big schools in Georgia) and 4 year college, when Ik my ass is going to be in huge debt and considering I have personal problems that hinder some things. Seriously I felt so ashamed of myself and I never talk to people about my school or show my school life because of it. I just don’t know what to do :( I feel like I’m going nowhere in life

Yep, you get a lot of criticism. I went to community college when I was still in HS and because that was on my record other kids thought I was a loser for daring to go there. But it's SO way cheaper and a great way to get your core classes out of the way and even your Freshman year's worth of your major. But what really gets me is the assumption that if you go to community college then you must be stupid, you must not have been at the top of your class and I graduated in the top 1% of my class with a 4.0 GPA, but ugh people just assume that you are stupid, but in reality, you're actually making very smart choices! I say go wherever you feel is best for you!

Same my HS gpa was 3.67 UW (and got Golden State Seal Merit Diploma which is basically the New York Regent Diploma for the state of California scoring high on multiple standardized tests and doing well on important core classes) and I took 11 college classes while at HS on CS and got certified with adobe products and Microsoft office. I'm still going to a CC to transfer as it seems the most logical financially as I am first generation and extremely poor.

Actually felt this SM, except my GPA was a tad bit shy of a 3.4GPA, super average I know I wish I tried much harder in my Freshman and Sophomore year but thats beyond the point. (I am still a senior and still have to graduate in June). Like many high achieving high school students I too had dreams of going to the top universities straight out of college in order to meet the standards of my peers and make something of myself. Luckily, my parents are very accepting for my decision to go to community college next year however many of my parent's friends and some of my peers even criticize me for making the decision to get my 2 free years of community college since I also live in California and CA residents get 2 years free. Anyway, despite all the AP classes I have Aced, AP exams passed, and a dramatic increase in my grades in my Junior year. It would seem like I have everything figured out for myself. However, I decided to rethink my choices and felt like dishing out 16-20k a year for something I am not 100% sure of is not really what I want to do. hell, even some of the peers that looked wary of my CC decision are just settling to the closest college to them w/o knowing what they are getting themselves into. Within the past 2 months, I have learned to just take advantage of this opportunity, my second chance I would say. and ignore what others say. And I am lowkey happy with my decision.

What matters is your major and your job not the name of the school unless you are going into a prestige focused career like law (and even then thats not the whole harbinger to success). @Venetian Tiger UC Davis doesn’t want people with an excessive amount of units. I don’t know about any other UC. (Also, UC Davis states that first year students should graduate in a “timely manner.” They don’t want students to spend time in college trying to figure out what they’re interested in). You should check the UC campuses that you’re interested in. Your advisors are right: don’t transfer to a CSU: you’ll accumulate units... but, if you stay in a cc to try to raise your GPA, each class that you take will decrease your chances of getting into UC Davis. I recommend that you apply right now to UC... before you sign up for any more classes at your cc.

We should abolish community colleges and let these people go back to high school and yes hey they should be allowed to attend the same high school as regular high school students (but different classrooms)

A liberal arts degree is worthless. I went to community College 40 years ago and retired with a comfortable income. It was the best investment I ever made. Cc is the best bang for the buck you are going to find.

There’s no such thing as a “worthless degree”. It all depends what you decide to do after college.. your “degree” should not limit on what you think you can do career wise ... Imo that’s the mindset a lot of ppl fail to understand .. ppl think that if they major in biz, that they can only do Biz... if you major in art, that you can only do art... unfortunately this is a major flaw in ones thinking imo....

@@KRHEE I think there are actually degrees that are worse than worthless. There are many socialist courses that ruin a students value in the job market. There are employment services that screen these people out so companies don`t have to deal with them.

Just because someone works a 9-5 everyday, shouldn’t take away from their knowledge. That 9-5 employee can easily be more successful than you within a year especially with todays resources. You can work hard n go to school and work hard at a 9-5 . Everyday. God forbid you do all this to impress others just to pass away next week, THATS what’s really sad, y’all are programmed to literally work to death.
