Such a talented man with such an unfortunate turnout. He hits every note effortlessly and always has but he just can’t kick the dope.

@EverChasingDaylight there are plenty of videos without reverb from Jonny. to say that his voice "isn't all that amazing" is selling him short drastically...he only started using insane amounts of reverb recently. I think it's because he doesn't practice. the voice is like a muscle and gets stronger with practice...in an interview Emarosa said Craig wasn't showing up to any rehearsals or songwriting sessions for a long time. and yet he did shows like this...that alone is impressive

@sgtskysyndrome Yeah, this is definitely the environment that Jonny thrives in. Once again, thanks for being really cool. This was, in all honesty, a pretty enjoyable discussion.

@sgtskysyndrome P.S: I really appreciate how cool and level-headed you are in voicing your opinion in contrary to mine as opposed to ridiculing me/ cussing me out (which is typically the manner of most people these days). So, thanks for being a cool-headed boss and for bringing up highly valid points.

@EverChasingDaylight some valid points as well. about the harmonies though, they require more skill and technique and control...but in the end they accomplish the same thing that reverb does and that was my point. they highlight imperfections in the sense that it can easily be told if someone screwed up but speaking as someone who has seen emery live as well, i think sometimes the harmonies are a crutch because their solo voice isn't fantastic. one can be good at harmonies but not at soloing.

@EverChasingDaylight you did say something interesting about craig's capabilities though...the technique he uses is an easy way out. it requires skill and technique but its deceptive because it isn't his true vocal range. many singers now adays scream or yell to get past the passagio without going into falsetto. this can be bad for vocal chords (another reason he doesn't always sound so good) but produces higher notes. it also gives him that raspy sound without making him seem like josey scott

@sgtskysyndrome Harmonies typically are more devastating than solo performances. For one, it requires even more vocal control, in regards to blending with another vocalist and locking in tune (under the pretense that the other vocalist is in on pitch and in the same key). When harmonizing, there are certain intervals within a chord that vocalists try to produce.

@sgtskysyndrome These indeed are valid points. I actually watched his acoustic stuff before watching this performance (and i do prefer this performance). It is right to validate that his voice is good, however as a matter of my opinion I feel that it is not as great as some people over-glorify it as (which I feel I should have better specified). I do completely respect you're opinion; he is better than other popular vocalists such as Vic Fuentes, Craig Owens, and the like.

@EverChasingDaylight no probably by the way about the level headed thing. what's the point of having an opinion if you can't voice it eloquently or softly enough so as to persuade people to give it a chance? you are right though jonny has some unconventional style issues. his acoustic stuff isn't too bad but THIS is the setting he thrives in.

  • @sgtskysyndrome

@EverChasingDaylight the Emery guys are pretty good but I don't think they are better than craig... in fact they mask their imperfections with harmonies..same thing. Jonny's acoustic performances are misleading because, unlike emery, this band, and certainly DGD, don't have many songs that translate well to acoustic performances. He has a strong voice with a pretty good range, but that range is cut short when he is whispering to an acoustic guitar on a tour bus. Jonny has great technique mostly.

@sgtskysyndrome Part of the reason why I still prefer singers such as those in Emery is, again, because of technique. For one, there is the issue with his range. Yes, it is true that he has a good range that sounds healthier and stronger than most. However, when it comes along to jamming with to an acoustic guitar in a tour bus, it requires more vocal technique, both with breathing and tonal precision, to sing quietly than it does louder. Dang. These comment limits do suck haha

@sgtskysyndrome If Jonny if having trouble singing higher notes for reasons other than fatigue and sickness, then maybe some of the notes he sings live are not truly in his register which means he forces these things out (which is what i heard from his vocal performances). This is one area where he lacks technique; he doesn't take care of his voice by acknowledging its capabilities/ weaknesses and addressing each appropriately. Also, harmonies highlight imperfections as opposed to masking them.

  • @EverChasingDaylight

@sgtskysyndrome If one of the vocalists doesn't approach a vocal line in the same manner that the other does (for example in mouth shape or breathing), then that entire vocal portion typically will sound unintentionally dissonant and out of tune. So in actuality, harmonizing further exemplify a musician's vocal ability/ technique. Again, I do agree that Jonny Craig is talented. I just feel (in my opinion) that there are vocalists who are better.

In all honesty, Jonny Craig's voice isn't all that amazing. It's pretty good, but the reverb in this performance helps to clean it up a bit. I've heard them acoustic and his voice isn't all that great. With just an acoustic, his voice is naked, highlighting his imperfections and, at times, lack of technique. Don't get me wrong; he's good, but there are definitely other vocalists that are better than him, both inside and outside of this genre. For example:Toby Morrell and Devin Shelton of Emery.
