Whether you realize it or not, you're susceptible to email phishing scams. So how can you prevent phishing attacks and avoid these email threats?
Your best bet is to increase your awareness and be prepared. That's where the S.T.O.P. method comes in. When you receive an email, you should ask your self these questions.
Is this email...
* Suspicious?
* Telling me to click a link or a button?
* Offering something that's too good to be true?
* Pushing me to do something urgently?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes"...STOP! There's a chance that you're the recipient of a phishing email attack.
So what can you do if you suspect that the email is a fraud and your online security is in jeopardy?
Simple: use a different method or mode of communication to confirm the veracity of the email.

I would love to share your video. However, the beginning part about the "Nigerian prince" is too much of a stereotype and borders on racist. In 2022, we need to be more sensitive than that. Sorry to say, I had to find a different video because of this (the photo pushed it beyond cringe to "can't use it at all"). Take that part out, and we'll share this.

Thank you for having CORRECT captions on this video! A friend, a refugee, has just lost a lot of money out of her newly opened bank account, and I am trying to find videos where the English is clearly spoken and the concepts are clearly communicated - and accurate captions are also helpful. You win!

Very good information that you have made to alert people of these scams. STOP is easy to remember and works well. I usually look at the email address and right away they look hokey you know it’s not real. One I got the other day was a woman dying of cancer with no heirs. She told me, who I never met, that she was going to give me 5 million dollars. I was suppose to send info almost everything but my accounts, which I never sent her anything but deleted the email immediately. Thanks for the video.

That's a great point that I didn't address here. The email address is often a dead giveaway, but even that can be spoofed. In the case of Barbara Corcoran, the email address was correct (the hackers had infiltrated their email system and sent the email from Barbara's correct address).

I have done a lot of research on phishing. Your cast was the best I got something out of. Anyway, look what happens when we have secure boot installed. In the middle of browsing youTube I got a finishing installing my windows page. What did I do? Knowing I had secure boot I held down the keyboard start button. In 10 seconds I got a shut down window. I could shut down as normal. When I restarted it booted up as normal I could login as I normally do. My computer operated as normal. I inspected my defender settings. Nothing changed. I haven't seen the pop every again.

The only reason I opened, and downloaded the document was because I was supposed to receive a result for a family member.

And my bank/credit card company should stop sending me emails with "click here to see your latest statement". The email is legitimate but it also makes it "normal" for banks to send emails with links to click on to go to their website. Surely it would be far better if they asked you to log into your online banking without any link.

The easiest way is to check the email address most of the time you’re not have to look any further, I’m talking about opening up so you can see what the actual email address is. They are so hokey and misspelled and give you a chance for a good laugh before you delete and oh by the way I blocked them before I delete them. This works real well on my iPhone and iPad I don’t know about other brands, notebook computers and desktop

Why is it every time you try to get actual help with phishing all they tell you is how to identify it? What if I'm not an idiot and know when I am getting scammed? What I don't know is HOW TO DO SOMETHING TO STOP IT!

  • @AllThingsSecured

Point taken, although the purpose of this video is to help people identity and not fall for these scams. I'll be working on a different video to talk through what to do if you've already been scammed. But in your case, I'm not sure I understand - if you recognize that it's a scam, what is there to stop? A phishing scam is different than something like a ransomware, because as long as you know it's a scam, you can just ignore it.

Yes, I guess that could work. :) You could also just throw away your computer or stop using the internet. But sometimes we have to balance the practical with the secure. Sometimes we receive emails we need that aren't instantly recognizable, and we need a way to assess whether it's a scam or not.
