“Colonel” Tom Parker is the “villain” who is played by Tom Hanks. He was an illegal Dutch immigrant and was born Andreas Cornelis Van Kuijk. He was elvis’ manager for all of his career. Mostly everyone regards him as the villain due to his lack of care for elvis. He did some truly terrible things such as taking 50% of elvis’ income which is insane since most cuts to a manager are usually around 10%. He also constantly made elvis do terrible films for a quick buck and never let him leave the US due to the fear of being caught as an illegal immigrant. It is widely agreed he pushed elvis far too much and into his grave to satisfy his gambling addictions.

Over the last decades Elvis has become a cartoon like figure, a caricature, a Las Vegas wedding prop. How did we lose side of his significance as a musical and culture icon. This boy single-handedly changed the course of music. Elvis didn't invent Rock 'n' Roll, nobody did, but he blurred and challanged the strict line between black and white music like no other artist had ever done or ever will. He broke down the doors for scores of artists to follow, black and white. Artists we otherwise would never had heard of. I hope this movie will get that across.

Hanks is playing Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who was an immigrant from Europe. Parker had a gambling addiction and to feed that he pushed Elvis to his physical limits doing tours. He also stifled Elvis' International capability because he didnt want to leave the U.S. because he never had a visa

From my understanding Colonel Parker was responsible for Elvis’ big break, but also responsible for his downward spiral into drugs that inevitably led to his death. Colonel work Elvis into an early grave.

  • @antonioborriello5287

    @antonioborriello5287

    2 жыл бұрын

@@geeebuttersnap2433 well, from what Elvis' closest friends and family have stated was that due to Col. Tom Parkwr pushing Elvis to do tour after tour, literally humdreds of concerts, which helped finance his gambling addiction....Elvis went heavy on the uppers/downers and whatever else to get him energized, to relax, and of course 'escape the fame' and depression. So, yes, indirectly Parker was responsible for that. But i truly believe most of his entourage were 'Yes men' and just pampered him and his addictions. I also believe, from what i read in the book from his closest friends and bodyguards, by 1974 Elvis was not himself, the drugs had him long gone. He needed a break, then what would have been great following that break, should of been a new challenge, like an overseas tour or a redifining of music; he could of done so many good hits in the 70s that others made theirs. I always like the song by Lynn Anderson;: "i beg your pardon, i never promised you a rose garden" for Elvis; he would of made that his own with his style.....and many more. Finally, most importantly......he need a geniune, true love in his life. His divorce from Priscilla shook him up and i feel he was lonely; missing the connection he had with her. That was partially his fault, all the fooling around, but i think when he lost her, he grew up. But that's life, riggt? We would all like to have done some things different.....but falling is the only way we can learn. Still, all he did will have the world remeber him, hopefully forever.

Thanks for reacting to this! As an Elvis fan, I'm excited to see the movie. You don't know what you're missing. His life, from beginning to end, is fascinating and unique. He recorded over 700 songs in all different genres. And his vocals are incredible! People get so hung up on his jumpsuits which he only wore for for about the last third of his career. Most are not aware of what a huge role he played in changing cultures worldwide and in helping to end segregation in this country. Sorry I went on a rant, but if you explore Elvis' music and live performances you'll be amazed. There's a reason he's still gaining new fans every day all these decades after his passing.

The scene on ferris wheel is symbolic nod to Parker's carnaval days ! Parker was good promoter which eas good for him but never got Elvis the artist and this lead to problems later Austin has Elvis' moves and mannerisms on point ! ...I feel that this movie will show the man behind the legend ! The drugs are a byproduct of the supper stardom that came with being Elvis Presley ! ! ! Elvis fans need to support the film ! He deserves his story to be told with respect on the big screen ! ! ! As a long long time Elvis fan there has been so much bias against him for this and that by people not knowing much about him other than rumours, that it was a relief and joy to see you approach it with an open mind. As others will tell you he was born into abject poverty and within a year or 2 of his life his father got put into jail for changing something like a 4 dollar cheque to 40.

This was a beautifully made film by the one and only Baz and the cast of unforgettable Tom Hanks, who plays the main character in Elvis' story for the film, and Austin Butler who is singing himself in this.He also lost his mother at the age of 23,the same age as Elvis when he lost his mother. This was a personal connection made between the two and brought him more confidence in providing the essence of Elvis Presley. The Black community was what shaped Elvis to be brought up into the legend he was and glad that Baz gave us the most factual evidence and made those inclusions of Elvis' life to form this film.No reason to label this film as a version of Elvis' life that is sad and heartbreaking, but his true life being told and brought to life in the way it never has been before❤

Elvis was able to capture the persona of all the characters he played to perfection. The 31 movies that Elvis made always entertained everyone who watched them. Austin Butler will most definitely receive the Oscar for his dynamic performance in “Elvis”. Great reaction, Colonel Parker helped Market Elvis to become the biggest star in the world but also stifled Elvis. Elvis was unable to perform outside the USA because of him being an illegal immigrant and he was frightened he wouldn't be allowed back in the country. Please react to Suspicious Minds, just pretend, Bridge over troubled water, make the world go away and you've lost that loving feeling all from 1970. These will show you the real Elvis.

My grandma saw him live, in his glory. The man has messed up a lot in his life, but even towards the end, when he was heavily dependent on pills and probably only lived on 2kg cheeseburgers, he sat down at the piano and let rip, even with his voice. He had some talent. Unlike many other musicians today, whose voices are simply digitally altered.

Then there's Tom Hanks, a great actor from decades gone by so U can't go wrong. His portrayal of the colonel, amazing & he sells it. So u won't be disappointed & of course the songs, can't forget them. Watch Austin sing If I Can Dream wearing that white suit just like Elvis, he nails that footage. Great direction from Baz Luhrmann, another hit.

    * * * Missing from this movie is his Country Music Roots. Rock & Roll is not just R&B. Elvis fused Country with Blues and his own brand of Rock & Roll was born. Also missing is the fact that Elvis biggest influence was not R&B it was Pop Ballad singers like Dean Martin & Bing Crosby. He did not set out to be an R&B singer, nor was he. Even Gospel music, which the trailer shows, there were other influences beside those in the community. At age 14, he met JD SUMNER (of the Stamps Gospel Quartet), which he came to see during an all-nigh hymn sing in Memphis. JD was a big influence on him, and later joined his band!

Thanks for your reaction. Neither Hanks nor Austin Butler look or sound like the characters they play. Parker may have been Dutch, but he did not have a heavy accent like Tom Hanks portrays in this movie (plenty of clips of him talking on KZread). Most actors who portrayed Elvis made the same mistake that Austin Butler makes: they talk with a deep voice that is more reminiscent of Elvis impersonators. Just look up Elvis interview clips and you'll hear he actually had a pretty high voice when he talked. And nobody who ever played Elvis was as handsome as he was, that is just impossible. Elvis was born in a 1 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqZ6pduHfdnAh84.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

This is going to be a great movie. Especially for me, as someone who's known (not personally, though that would be cool) and liked Austin Butler before this movie. But I think other people are going to know and like him after this movie. (And I wasn't surprised to hear that he's the one singing, because he sings in general, and impersonating and doing voices is a musical skill anyway. As someone who does a bit of it, but over here in Australia, I have some perspective on that subject). He's always been great. I knew him as a character called James on a tv series called "Zoey 101" which was very well scripted and well executed. But he's still the male Vanessa Hudgens has had the longest relationship with and he's naturally a blonde. 2 interesting pieces of trivia for yall. But I'm excited for this. I mean Tom Hanks is consistently brilliant as well. And to answer your "Why Elvis?" question, it's so that people can 'actually' know the truth about his story, rather than only 'believing' they know the truth about his story. But at least it's seems you've since realized from watching the trailer how arrogant and ignorant that 'question' is. Not you guys in general from what I can tell, just the 'question'. Other Baz Luhrmann stuff I enjoyed: "The Great Gatsby" remake (because yes it is a remake; I'd seen the original the previous year though in fairness it's not 'as' good), "Romeo & Juliet" also with Leo DiCaprio of course as well as Claire Danes and several other talented people and "Australia" the Hugh Jackman / Nicole Kidman film.

The Col. worked him to death. That’s the villain referred to. I’m an Elvis purist, you two are not. But, I like your positive reactions, this is the first & only movie biopic of the King that portrays Elvis’s genuine legacy including the singing which is all actual Elvis vocals & performances. People are reacting negatively to Tom Hanks in the trailer as. Col. Tom Parker, Elvis' manager. As much as I hate Hanks for his liberal wackiness, he's one of the best actors of all time and I'm positive he researched the role 1000% and nailed it in the movie. He is friends with Priscilla Presley and said about Parker: "I was expecting to hear stories about the distrust she had for ‘Colonel Tom’ Parker over these many years. And she said, ‘No. He was a wonderful man, and I wish he was alive today. He was a scoundrel in his way, but He took really great care of us..." Meanwhile Baz Luhrmann has only put out a limited number of movies - but they've all been award winners or at least award nominated including: Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia (which wasn't good IMO), and most recently The Great Gatsby. Elvis is only his 6th movie and he's already won a Golden Globe, 4 AACTAs and 2 BAFTAs with 20 total nominations (including an Oscar Nomination). He's also won a Tony Award with 3 nominations and also 3 Grammy nominations. So... Pretty impressive resume.

Something not a lot of people realize.... a lot of the music you hear in this movie is NOT Elvis. They used some of this songs later in the movie, but all the singing done from younger Elvis was actually Austin Butler's voice. There are certainly some critiques to be made for this film, but you can't deny the amount of work that Butler put into this role or that his performance was pretty spectacular.

Col. Tom Parker is reviled by a lot of Elvis fans because he roped Elvis into a lot of crappy movie and, worse, limited the songs Elvis had to choose from by requiring songwriters to give up half their royalties to get their songs recorded by The King. Because of this, the greatest vocalist on earth was too often forced to pick thru B grade material in order to find songs to record. Elvis was a genius who was starving artistically because of the limitations Parker put on his career.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 He wanted to record Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" in the early 70s and Dolly wanted him to record it. But she refused on principle to give up half her publishing so he never got to do the track. He almost lost out on "Suspicious Minds" in 1969 because the songwriter wasn't going to give up half the publishing, but in that instance it was brought to his attention and it's one of the few times he stood up to the Colonel. He said he didn't care about the publishing deal, he just loved the song and wanted to put it out. I think one reason Parker had such Svengali-like influence on Elvis is because he got to Elvis at the age of 19 and convinced him that he was the only one who could take him to the top (which was BS). And when Elvis did have great success he naturally credited the Colonel for much of it. He was a young dirt poor kid when Parker became involved in his life and career and that influence unfortunately extended all of Elvis' life. Elvis tried to fire him in the early 1970s but the Colonel had finagled their business arrangement (he received fully 50% of Elvis' earnings off the top) so that Elvis would have had to pay him several million dollars, so Elvis relented, the Colonel stayed, and the artistic genius inside of Elvis withered away. (It was also because of the Colonel that Elvis didn't co star with Barbra Streisand in "A Star is Born" in 1975).
