    Some clowns have been claiming The King just sang what he was given. He was in fact the first singer to experiment in the studio and tell the band and backing singers what to do. He was the original 'studio arranger'. Listen to his different takes on different songs and see how they developed from tracks 1 to 30. They often end up completely different from what the songwriter(s) had imagined, and on some you can hear him saying "this isn't working" or "let's speed it up a little." Listen to his amazing and totally different slow/fast versions of "Tonight is so right for love" and tell me: Which version (if any!) had the songwriters imagined when they submitted the song sheet.

    Gigsand Busking Sinatra and Pavarotti never write a thing either. This debate is about VOICE and (acc. to even opera singers like Placido Domingo and Kiri Te Kanawa) Elvis' s voice was second to none.

    Had RCA not ponied up $35K to buy out Sam Phillips in late 1955, this track was to have been the next Pelvis single on Sun. As it was, Nipper came across and Sam was able to pay outstanding bills relating to manufacturing and shipping recent[mostly Pelvis'] releases. The track went into the can and remained out of sight until the 1990's when released as part of the "Complete Fifties" box set. Pelvis likely would not have stayed with Sun anyway as he had become bigger business then Phillips could[or wanted to] handle going forward. Part of the deal with "Colonel" Parker was that he would get "His Boy" a better record deal. Actually, the Dog Co. really didn't put up the 35 grand completely. Parker was involved in about 20 thousand of it. The deal is somewhat convoluted but is documented in books covering the 1955 period. Once an RCA "Victim", there was an adjustment period for Presley as the producers struggled to replicate the "Sun Sound" without fully knowing all of the ingredients it took to produce a Sun record. Phillips, during his earlier career in radio had access to RCA engineering materials and built the Sun studio essentially to RCA specifications for broadcast use. RCA, in constructing its own rooms drew from the same sources yet, eschewed the "less is more by necessity" approach used at Sun. By overthinking all aspects of the early 1956 sessions, RCA execs, none too happy with what was the largest advance ever given to an artist up to that time, began to wonder if they had made the single biggest mistake in record business history. At least one frantic call to Phillips by Steve Sholes, who was the producer of those sessions revealed that there was a way to bring out the best in a Pelvis performance and that everybody should rethink the methodology in place up to that point. Conversely, Pelvis sought out Sam's thoughts regarding how Dogco. wanted to make records causing Sam to provide needed input in acclimating Presley to the bigger picture major labels expected during the recording process. History shows that soon enough everyone's fears on all sides were allayed and some great records followed. But for a minute, it is possible that as far as recording, things may not have ever left Union Avenue. Or, worse, other labels less familiar with the elements of early Rock N' Roll may have stepped in and completely misread the task at hand. At that point, had his recording career stalled or worse ,stopped after 1955, we still would be talking about the Sun recordings as the landmark achievements they are 64 years on. For the record, out of the 35 thousand paid to Sun, a total of about $5000.00 was Presley's entire share representing unpaid royalties to date. As for Phillips, shrewd investing both outside of the industry and in radio station ownership coupled with the development of artists such as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and others made him quite rich and to that end he never looked back with any regret letting his biggest artist go in 1955

    The only slapback heard here is from the built in tape delay in Scotty's EchoSonic amplifier. The video description is a bit misleading, but I'll try to explain. Sun didn't use reverb or echo chambers, instead relying on tape echo (recording a signal, playing back that signal and feeding that back into the record head), Sam accomplished this with two tape machines with the vocal mic (with some background instrumentation bleeding through) getting the echo treatment by going from one tape being delayed in playback to the main mono master tape, while the other mics are recorde dry without going through the echo signal chain.

  • @customrecordingco

    @customrecordingco

    3 жыл бұрын

    What you are hearing here is the tape delay tape. This is what would have been mixed into the console to create the master. The slapback you hear on Scotty’s guitar is from his Echosonic amp.

    By the time he landed at Dog Company, once the realization that everything could be monetized especially music publishing things began to change. After 1956, songs were submitted. If the writers were willing to accept severely discounted royalties and in some cases made to split the very authorship of their songs then, Pelvis Co. was interested. This eventally degenerated into the 17 year mostly shit fest of songs he carlessly recorded. There are a few exceptions. The problem being that there were only a few. And far between. He was eclipsed on the charts by mostly everybody that had come in his wake. As for most of the records, they were performed like the arrangements of whatever publishing demos were selected without any changes. In some cases reportedly, the demos themselves were released. Meaning - he ISN'T EVEN ON THE RECORD..... If you thought he didn't give a damn ( and correctly so) by now, putting out demos is a new low. Presley will continue to be studied mainly as the unfathomable enigma his legacy presents while the faithful will continue to elevate him ( mostly to only themselves) to deity like levels. Not for nothing, Col. Von Fifty Percent would send Pelvis' Cadillac Limo out on " tour". Dumbass " fans" would line up to see...........A CAR. Such was and is the reality that the faithful will support anything however remotely connected to,uh, "THE KING" And not in the least, declarations that can be found even on YT comment threads of "miracles" and lives saved directly attributed to JEEBUS,uh Pelvis,uh, WTF????. True. And very very sad. In some corner of hell, there is still laughter punctuated by the repeating of " Don't worry, boy, I tol' ya, you'd have a million dollars one day ". Followed by " Thanks, why yes, yes, you did". In the years following his demise ( or resurection or retreat into hiding depending on exactly what brand of tires are on your trailer home), Presley has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for the owners of his legacy, far more than he or the Dutch " colonel" ever saw( or stole) in life.

I used to be friends with Marshall Grant (bass) and WS Holland (drums) who played for Johnny Cash. They knew a lot too, because they were there when it happened, so they ought to have known.
