Elvis Presley, The King - Polk Salad Annie
Live in Las Vegas 1970
High Quality
Some of you all never been down South too much...
I' gonna tell you a little story, so you'll understand where I'm talking about
Down there we have a plant that grows out in the woods and the fields,
and it looks something like a turnip green.
Everybody calls it Polk salad. Now that's Polk salad.
Used to know a girl that lived down there and
she'd go out in the evenings to pick a mess of it...
Carry it home and cook it for supper, 'cause that's about all they had to eat,
But they did all right.
Down in Louisiana
Where the alligators grow so mean
Lived a girl that I swear to the world
Made the alligators look tame
Polk salad Annie
'Gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
For the mama was working on the chain-gang
What a mean, vicious woman
Everyday before suppertime
She'd go down by the truck patch
And pick her a mess of Polk salad
And carry it home in a tote sack
Polk salad Annie
'Gators got you granny
Everybody said it was a shame
'Cause the mama was working on the chain-gang
Whoo, how wretched, dispiteful, straight-razor totin' woman,
Lord have mercy.
Sock a little Polk salad to him
Yeah, you know what, yeah, yeah
But daddy was a lazy and a no-count
Claimed he had a bad back
All her brothers were fit for
Was stealing watermelons out of my truck
For once Polk salad Annie
'Gators got your granny
Everybody said it was a shame
For the mama was working on the chain-gang
Sock a little Polk salad to him
You know what meets a meal mention
You sock a little
Hey, hey, hey, yeah, yeah
Chic a bon, chic a bon, chic a bon bon bon bon
Chic a bon, chic a bon, chic a bon bon bon bon
Sock a little Polk salad to him
You know what meets a meal mention
Sock a little Polk salad to him
You know what meets a meal mention
Chinc, chinc, chinc, chin, ling, ling ling

Question how can a man who never learned to read music never wrote a song he sang but has the musical genius to put together a heart stopping show every single time? That’s how you know what ELVIS PRESLEY had was a God given gift. He felt the songs in his whole being and danced the way it made him feel. Priceless!
@ko7577

I think him not writing the music had a lot to do with the sincerity and excitement of the performances. He wasn't just singing; he was listening to the music with the audience and loving it just as much as they did. It made his performances joyous.

I think one reason Elvis is so good is because it’s like he lets the music take over his body and they become one he just feels it

Craziness! What I really like about this performance is what it shows us: how Elvis conducts the musicians. He was an incredibly good arranger.
He was so comfortable on stage, he found a note in his pocket while doing a concert on front of thousands of people and he just read it and keep going. I like that

My Uncle worked at the Hotel as a Chef in Hawaii. My Aunt flew me to Hawaii to see him in for his satellite concert! We got to go to the back exit area as he walked down the hall to his room, he wiped his forehead on a hotel linen napkin and tossed it to Red and Red dropped it in a bin. After they left, I ran over to grab it. the others in bin were sheets, the napkin was still damp and had streaks of his makeup on it! I still have that napkin today, framed! 💖
I’m 60 years old and I’m from Switzerland (Lucerne), I’ve been listening to Elvis since I was 10 years old, I watched Elvis' live concert in Hawaii in 1973. I appreciate many kinds of good music, I also know all the songs of Johnny Cash and June Carter (Great) and other great artists. However, Elvis remains the greatest musician and entertainer of all time, but in all his songs, all the power of his soul comes out. One could also say that he gave his whole heart to his listeners. This way is definitely unique and I think it will remain so. Denis Herger

I am a 75 yr old grandma . Loved Elvis then- love him now. This is my favorite performance. Watch it everyday. Have watched the Elvis movie everyday since it came out and have 2 copies. I have all the books and so many cd’s and DVD’s of his music and live performances and of course 6 Elvis t- shirts. There has not been nor will there ever be anyone like him again. We will never see the likes of a Entertainer like Elvis Presley again ❤ l go to my local football stadium its half empty Elvis would have filled it a 100 times over, sadly missed God bless him and his family ❤❤
It’s one thing to listen to Elvis. And it’s a totally different thing to watch him. He was the greatest entertainer this world has ever known.
In addition to his incredible raw talent, astounding unmatched musicianship...he is funny as hell. His comedy is subtle.... but it is strewn through his performances. Just pay attention! It’s a joy watching this man doing his thing...

Forreal! This is probably the first time I've watched any Elvis at all when he was in his top Vegas years (& only familiar with the later mess like everyone else unfortunately... 😔) and it's an absolute treat to watch him just kill it like this! There's absolutely no question how completely dialed-in he is towards every last music-related thing happening in his midst because that sense of completely commanding the stage comes through so loud & clear that it more or less eclipses any of the other parts of his personality you can see on display here, imo

Best part of Elvis performing live was how he just made it so fun and enjoyable. Even times where he screwed up the lyrics...it's the purest inside view of his fun and light-hearted personality. Where some artists would jump all over anyone who messed up, I can see Elvis poking fun after the concert. Best way to retain the respect of your musicians & backup singers. Everyone makes mistakes. It's how you make it work when it happens on stage. Definitely humanizes the guy and makes him more relatable to the average Joe.
Elvis conducted the whole orchestra just with the movement of his body. Simply fantastic. ❤UNIQUE❤
