Mac Davis usually did comedic songs, would not do this himself, his audience would not take him seriously. He asked Sammy Davis Junior. Sammy said I can't, I didn't live this, but Elvis did. So he asked Elvis, and he said this is important, so he fought his manager to do this song. Elvis was poorer than other kids in the ghetto, he has indian ancestors, which he wanted known, the manager won that fight.

Elvis was dirt poor… his dad went to jail when he was a very small child because he needed money to buy groceries and altered a cheque. He never forgot his roots and spent his life giving to those in need. I would recommend you reacting to ‘Elvis- a generous heart’… he was filled with humility and love for others.

It was Elvis's tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King after his death. How big was Elvis? His Aloha concert was viewed by 1.5 BILLION people Worldwide. Keep in mind, this was before the internet or streaming. It was broadcast via satellite and remains the single largest audience in television history. Try to find the live versions of his songs, those are the best as you get to see and feel his raw emotions. Have fun!

I don't think Elvis was a song writer, but he definitely wasn't "just a singer". He had everything!!! From incredible looks, vocals. personality and 31 movies under his belt. He changed the modern world, no one will ever reach that level again.💞

@@setonhillstudios It was in Houston ( 1970 ) that he threatened to cancel, if his black backing singers were not afforded the star treatment. In 1973, he and a few of his guys appropriated some paint and stole into the Vegas showroom and painted black, some of the gilt angel figures that adorned the walls. The next show, he shone the spotlights on them and announced that he had " integrated " the Las Vegas Hilton ....

Elvis is just as popular, if not more popular today, than he was back then. Elvis is an American icon that is to be respected and treasured and we should be proud to have had him❤❤❤

Elvis could sing anything and be believable because he put his heart and soul into his recordings and performances. His concerts were absolutely unrivaled and fantastic. Thanks for this one. Great reaction and hope you will do many more. From his first television performances as a 21 year old in 1956 to his last in 1977, he was a phenomenon. There are iconic performances, especially from the Ed Sullivan show, the 68 Comeback Special and 1970 LasVegas to 1973 Aloha From Hawaii and beyond.❤❤❤

Yes, the 68 comeback special two songs from that, especially. The one in the white suit singing “if I can dream” perfect, heartfelt lyrics like you like. Then he did a sit down with a black leather suit playing “ trying to get to you” funny, it was from the same special because that when he was really humorous and sitting on a round stage with fans just right next to him like you never see today. After his songs in the 50s where he was so famous, he had to go in the army, didn’t try to not get drafted or get special treatment. When he got back, he was scared he couldn’t hold on and dance anymore because that stupid Colonel Parker made him do a bunch of silly movies for years. He finally decided in 68 to try to come back singing, and was really nervous about it. It brought him back to his fame and more. You can kind of tell him the black weather suit sitting down that he was a little nervous even though he was with his longtime buddies playing with him. Just subscribed for Elvis videos. And if you ever do the Beatles, you’ll have a subscriber for life, L O L. The Beatles are my favorite ever except maybe the Eagles and Elvis tops all of them. The Eagles are also hard to get past copyright, but they have the best songs! The best of theirs (The Eagles) is live “take it to the limit” with Randy Meisner singing it’ll be the most popular when you find if you look for it. They played many genres and split up for a while, and three of their people had great hits of the round you may have heard of them. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Joe Walsh. All in the Eagles at the time Randy was singing the song I’m telling you about. Live version of take it to the limit. Keep going Dude! Great reactions.

You need to dive into the rabbit hole. He recorded over 700 songs and has sold over a billion records worldwide . Elvis was an activist and was doing controversial music before it was cool. In fact his manager thought this song might hurt his career. To me, "If I Can Dream" from the 68 comeback special is the best. It was a tribute to MLK jr. It will make you cry. Another great message song from Elvis is “If I can Dream”, from Elvis ‘68 Comeback Special. It is a beautiful song with a great message, it is a tribute to MLK and Bobby Kennedy who were both assassinated in 1968. “Walk A Mile in My Shoes” is also a great message song. Elvis grew up in the ghetto. His father built 2 room shack with money he borrowed. Elvis twin brother Jesse was stillborn and he was buried in a showbox at an unmarked grave, because they were poor. Elvis went to black churches. He would not play a venue if his black members were not allowed. They stayed or he'd leave. I saw him twice and had tickets for his Aug 18th 1977 show, but he passed away Aug 16th 1977. I paid $14.00 per ticket. I still have them.

this was controversial when he sang it, in fact his manager didn't want him to. It was the turbulent sixties, assassinations, race riots, and Nam. Because Elvis grew up in a black poor area in Mississippi, he could sing this song with real passion. He was a generous humanitarian who loved his fans and was kind to others. He got a lot of flack from men, because their women loved Elvis. I've loved him since 56 when I was 12 years old. Thanks for this great reaction. Check out some of his Gospel songs, e. g. "How Great Thou Art", "Take my hand, precious Lord", "Crying in the Chapel" or the Gospel Production Number of his '68 Comeback Special. They're all great. Elvis used to gather his group AFTER his regular shows to sing Gospel with them for several hours.

You really need to check out Suspicious Minds (Live in Las Vegas". Elvis directs his band with his body movements and the band members watch him closely. Though he really didn't write songs he did his own arrangements of the music that he performed. Elvis has been inducted into FIVE different music Hall of Fames. "Tryin' to Get to You" from his '68 Comeback Special is an eye opener and really shows his charisma and personality.

Elvis was not a songwriter but he was very selective, from 1968 on, in which songs he sung. Often his songs resonated with events in his life or in areas he felt were important. Many songwriters wrote specifically with Elvis in mind. This whole catalog of live performances from 1970 and 1972 are gold. There were two concert "documentaries" made from which there is just a ton of great material. His early 1950s TV appearances are really good too.

Elvis was self-taught on the guitar, the bass, the piano, the accordian, the ukelele and the organ among others. He determined what sound he wanted from not only himself but also the band, his backup singers and the orchestra. He directed everyone on stage with various hand and body motions; he sang gospel, country, blues, R&B singularly and fused together. Elvis was one of the pioneers of Rockabilly & Rock & Roll. He is in the 5 main music Halls of Fame along with other 'lesser' Halls of Fame. Like most artists of his era, Elvis had others who wrote the lyrics to the songs he sang with a few exceptions. He has been listed as one of the top vocal artists of all times and has sold more than 1 1/2 billion records. He was the 'real deal,' authentic and generous to a fault. Doubtful that anyone considers Elvis Presley to have been 'just a singer.' Elvis recorded more than 700 songs & starred in more than 30 movies. Hope you do more Elvis reactions. You won't regret it.

I loved your changing expressions from the start to finish of this reaction! The great Mac Davis wrote "In the Ghetto." Elvis, like Sinatra, Crosby etc, was an interpreter of others' songs - a challenging skill in itself. Next reaction: possibly "If I Can Dream" from the 1968 "Comeback Special". Recorded shortly after the mind-numbing assassination of Dr Martin Luther King close to Elvis' home in Memphis, "If I Can Dream" was written especially for Elvis to convey its truths.

Thank you VERY much for reacting to this song. I hope you'll do more Elvis as you go. 😀 I used to own a copy of EVERY SINGLE ONE of Elvis' songs and albums. When I moved away from Alaska in 1978, I couldn't carry everything with me. I left ALL of my HUGE music collection (both records and tapes of more than one type and by dozens of artists), in my brother Frank's basement in Valdez. I never had the money, after beginning to live in California, to send for the things I had left there (which also included a number of BEAUTIFUL original pieces of furniture and other items my dad had made for me over the years before he passed away in 1973). A couple of years later, Frank and his wife moved down to (back to, for her) California, as well. They brought me a set of cheap encyclopedias with one book missing, that I had tried to sell to the Valdez Library before I left. It was such a terrible version, that they had turned it down. When I learned that he had sold EVERYTHING else I had left in his care, without even asking me beforehand, I cried for days. It took me a long time to forgive him for that (but I did). I still wish I had all those old records and tapes back, though (sigh). My brother Gary (the older of my two brothers) did a tour of Elvis' home, in 2009, and he bought me some CDs of several of the albums, because he knew how much I treasure Elvis' music. Answer to your question of whether or not Elvis wrote any of his songs: he never did. He was given credit as co-writer for many of them, however -- even though he was not. That was one of those very dodgy moves of producers even sometimes today. In the case of lyrics, if the lyricists wanted to make sure that Elvis (or other choices) actually sang their newly-written songs, they were told they'd have to give up some of their monetary claim (often up to 50%) to the lyrics. It also pretty much guaranteed that if they tried to sell their lyrics elsewhere, they would be going against the law, or if they did manage it, Elvis (actually his producers) would get additional money for the second copyright for those lyrics. None of that was Elvis' fault, except that he ultimately agreed to go ahead and let the producers do what they were going to do. It was what you did, back then (and still sometimes today). It's stuff like that that has made Dan Vasc (and many others) NOT go with music producers. With today's technology, there really is no reason TO do anything but produce what you create, yourself. You can always hire someone to do the things you don't do , or don't want to do, pay them a wage, and STILL make more money than you would by going through a secondary producer/publisher. "...a typical Elvis song..." Actually, "In the Ghetto" IS a fairly typical Elvis song. He cared a LOT for his fellow man. Wikipedia has a "List of songs recorded by Elvis Presley." that has great links that you can click through for more info. You will be able to find most of them on KZread, after seeing them in the list. Also included in the list are complete lists of the WRITERS, in which Elvis is never included. The writer of THIS song, is Mac Davis (one of my VERY favorite singers of all time). I think you will be quite amazed when you do. They need to be done in the order shown. The first one was posted only five days after Dan's father passed away, as a tribute to him. Roberto's favorite singer had been Elvis--in particular, the song that Dan chose as the tribute. The second one was created as a special gift, with a wonderful, tear-bringing intro that details why. If you react to Elvis' versions of those two songs, prior to reacting to Dan's versions, I will be really interested with your comparisons. AHA! Fact or fable, this seems to be what has passed down about how Elvis ended up being the artist that recorded. I googled quickly and found different stories about how this came about and a well known artist who decided not to record the song. but recommended Elvis. Online stories recount that Elvis pressed on after thinking about the song despite any possible controversy and ended up being the artist who recorded it and it became a hit for him. I found two different artists who turned down recording the song in a fast check.

You have no idea how hard Elvis fought to be able to sing this song, as his manager Colonel Tom Parker was dead against it ,saying it would stir up trouble as it was a sensitive topic as the Government at that time hated Elvis standing up for the Black people but Elvis would have none of it as he would not tolerate racism of any kind !

@@setonhillstudios There are a million stories of his kindness from him sending a fleet of limo's around Memphis every week to take the older folks to doctors ,shopping church, wherever they wanted to go ,to giving disabled kids in the front of the Audience a ring off his finger and ordering his security staff to see them home as the rings were worth thousands also he paid for Hospitals to be built and this is just a few i could mention !What a man !😍

He went against the wishes of his manager and recorded this song after being told not to. He was truly color blind when it came to how he viewed other human beings.

If you like this one, check out his finale song "If I can dream" from the 68 comeback special, "My Way" from the Aloha Hawaii world wide satellite special, "suspicious minds" from Vegas early 70's - theres just SO many songs and hes got different eras and vibes depending on what song and what era. His song catalog is Huge. Kentucky Raiin is a good one, and pretty much anything from the Aloha Hawaii satellite special. Also one that will blow your mind is "Love me tender" from early 70's vegas where he kisses like forty girls both on and off the stage - on the lips! lol All the women wanted to be with him and all the men wanted to be him.

Elton John did not write his own lyrics like you mentioned but he did compose the music!!! You should check out if I could dream by Elvis Presley and yes he was not a songwriter at all but he did contribute some lyrics to certain songs!!! And while you’re at it look at a young Elvis Presley from 1957 from the movie jail house rock!!!

Elvis wasn’t a songwriter. He had professional songwriters doing that for him, or he did Covers & turned them into his own, usually better than the originals, such as Bridge Over Troubled Water. Elvis grew up in poverty, in a very poor Black community, one of four white families living there. The songwriter, Mac Davis, offered this song to Black singer Sami Davis Jnr. But he said he had not experienced poverty & therefore would not do the song justice. Sami suggested he offer the song to Elvis, who was his friend, because he knew Elvis had grown up in poverty. Elvis’ manager did not want Elvis singing it, & said it could destroy his career. Elvis chose to do it, because he wanted people to understand why growing up in a ghetto could do to a child. His song If I Can Dream, was another one that his manager did not want him to do, but Elvis did it as a tribute to Martin Luther King after he had been assassinated. It’s a really good one to listen to (if you want to do a reaction to that one, use the one where he is wearing a white suit in the 68 Comeback Special) By the way, Elvis wasn’t just a singer. He played rhythm guitar, bass guitar, & piano. He danced. He created all of his own musical arrangements to his songs, including how he wanted his backup singers to sing. Try listening to if i can dream a tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Senator Robert Kennedy. Both were assassinated within a month of each other in 1968.
