One of the best live performances you'll ever see. It was a song written for that moment in time (1968 was a tortured year in the USA) and he never performed it again. Elvis used his voice like an instrument and knew when to be soft and when to turn up the power. Autotune etc has spoiled a lot of music today.

This was written specifically as the closing number for Elvis’ 1968 Christmas special. It refers to MLK’s famous “I have a Dream” speech. MLK had been murdered earlier in ‘68. It is also about RFK and MLK’s murders. The show marked his “comeback” to live performing after making movies for years. He starred in 31 movies!

This song was written by Earl Brown. He was asked by the producer, to write a song relating to Elvis’s discussions/feelings, in tribute to MLK shortly after his and RFK’s assassinations. I don’t understand how you couldn’t understand the lyrics? He was very emotional when he recorded it. Elvis didn’t write any of his songs. He just owned any of them that he sang.

Great reaction! As others noted this is a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. who was murdered 15 minutes from Graceland, Elvis’ home. That added to the agony of Elvis Presley’s heartache of King’s assassination! It is no wonder he sang this song was such emotions. Probably his greatest performance. Also, Elvis was informed the day before this concert of how many men had lost their lives in the Vietnam war, which was going on during this time, and was severely shaken. Thus the red scarf he was wearing was a tribute to our servicemen and women who lost their lives in the war.❤

Disclaimer: Elvis movies should be recognized for what they are, mostly 1960s teenage fun movies, light hearted, except for a few quite good serious films. Please do not confuse these movies (esp the mid 1960s) as representing Elvis as a serious performer. His manager negotiated a 10 year movie contract back around 1960 when the movies & associated movie music was still good. However, by the mid 60s the movie companies did not let him evolve and kept him in the same formula, and the soundtracks also got worse. This was NOT Elvis' doing his best & failing. So don't look at an Elvis movie and think this is the best Elvis is capable of. This 1968 performance of If I Can Dream is from his big comeback and puts to rest what Elvis was all about musically.

@@jjbud3124 Unfortunately there is no telling if & when a video will be blocked. There are numerous reactors who somehow do get through entire Elvis videos without ever stopping or saying a word. I have seen this numerous times & none of it makes sense -- why some can do videos w-no issues & others have to do all sorts of things to prevent it from getting block. There's just no way to tell what youtube will or won't do.

if you know how he fought for this song in the racially divided 60's. I lived his era. I was 12 in '56 when he came on Sullivan, already a way to controversial figure he was absolutely hated by the adults in America and was a teen sensation. It was post WW11 and teens were coming into available money and buying power as a block. They literally carried him the first year of his appearances. It wasn't only girls either, it was all races and some rebellious males too. The churches hated him, the teachers hated him, and it was a strange excited era. He also hung out with blacks which was a problem for whites. You must see the short Documentary "Elvis Presley and the Black Community", actually radio stations were breaking his records right on the air. I don't know of any artist who faced that much hate. "If I Can Dream" was sung with passion because MLKjr, was an inspiration to him and he financially support King. Actress Celeste Yarnell was with him on the movie set of "Live a Little, Love a Little", she recalls watching King's funeral on TV with Elvis, she said he cried all the way through it. He was so in tune with changing race relations the movie covered a little but not much. Also his generous humanitarian efforts covered in "Elvis Presley King of Kindness", will shock you. Elvis was so much more than a handsome singer, over his 23 year career he wanted to bring people together, he did every genre of music from gospel to opera. His 3 octave range is showcased in "Now or Never", "How Great thou Art', and many more even an impromptu "The Lord' s prayer. He combined country, gospel, R&B with a truly different sound. He didn't write music but as you stated before artist were not encouraged to write there own music, when he signed up with RCA they had banks of union writers sending him songs to try. in the making of the 1968 "Comeback Special" a TV smash, Producer Steve Bender, relates how it all came to be. Bender was not an Elvis fan and was asked to do a Christmas special. When he met Elvis he bonded quickly with him and found him to be basically shy, but also knew what he wanted. Elvis had been made fun of in the medium of Television in the 50's and was not keen on doing the TV special. It was a idea of manager parker who had made an arrangement with NBC who financed another project for Parker and demanded Elvis do some kind of Special for sponsor Singer machines. Bender tells of how the whole group loved Elvis immediately, he went around to every stage hand and sound engineer introducing himself and thanking them for their help. Bender said that from the Beginning, they all realized that Elvis had not performed in almost 9 years because of his film commitments. He was terrified. they all wanted it to be a big success and worked hard to reassure Elvis. It was a smash and almost half of America watched his return to performing. The documentary of the special is on "The Gates of Graceland with Steve Binder". One more thing, when Elvis got to hear the "if I Can Dream' song, right away Parker said, "no, this is not a song for Elvis", and Elvis said, " I want to try it". On an empty sound stage with Bender in the control room, Elvis requests a dark stage, he rolls up in a fetal position on the floor and sings the song which Bender said raised the hair on his arms. He knew the song would be the greatest song Elvis ever performed. Thanks.

Elvis had many Great writers that wrote songs for him usually with his imput as to what he was looking for. This Song was written especially with Elvis in mind knowing his Love and respect for Dr Martin Luther King Jr and his I Have a Dream Speech. I really loved your review of this song. I was a child waiting for the Elvis 68 Comeback Special to be on TV. My entire family watched this. There were 12 kids in my family and 2 parents😊. You could have heard a pin drop during the special. Everyone in my family loved Elvis. Most of the songs he sang during the Comeback Special were songs he recorded earlier in his career. So this is the live version of the songs with a little different twist on them. Elvis was not a songwriter. All of his songs were written by someone else. Mac Davis, who was a country music singer, wrote a few of Elvis songs specifically for Elvis. If you ever get your hands on the Elvis 56 CD, or whatever is out there now, there are so many cool rock n roll songs on there. You can tell the difference between his voice in 1956 when he was so young, versus his voice in the 60's and 70's. He undoubtedly had one of the greatest voices of all time. Thanks for your reaction. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqZ6pduHfdnAh84.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings, also the assassination of Pres. Kennedy & Vietnam. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. Hi Jacob … i liked and subscribed. He never sang this song again but he did do an unused version in the iconic black leather suit he wore on the “ring” set. You can find it if you look a little. Slightly less intense. Also, he dung “Memories” and his voice just so imperfectly PERFECT... 1 of a kind sound. Like Juan Gabriel.

1956 was the first television performance on the show called Stage Show. However apparently he did a donut commercial in 1954 for Southern Maid Donuts unfortunately there has been no recordings found to date. I love the way he sings this song.

There is another version in Black leather suit from the 1968 comeback special. He gave it his soul. They added a philharmonic orchestra and I feel it drowns out his voice. I prefer the untouched original version. Elvis is one of the most diversified singer of all time. Was able to hit high notes and he took pride in training his voice to sing in the lower register. There was no "rock and roll"before 1954....there was blues, country, pop and gospel. In 1954 Elvis was given a chance by legendary producer Sam Phillips to record at Sun Records and Elvis spontaneously during a break began playing and singing "Thats Alright Mama" by Big Boy Crudup....Phillips ran out of the booth and said "Now thats different" Phillips saw that this was not blues, not country, not pop and not gospel.....it was all of them combined. That is rock and roll. Elvis first song was 1954....Chuck Berry, Little RIchard, Bo Diddily all had their first hits in 1955. So Rock was born in 54-55. I suggest you look at Elvis' song "American Trilogy" from the first Worldwide concert(1973) by a single performer, to see Elvis' range which is many times underrated because he is identified by his 1950s huge hits like Hound Dog, All Shook Up Don't Be Cruel etc. BB King said about Elvis: "He could sing any style and make you believe it was his only style. He could sing anything. I don't think they got it wrong when they called him the King" Elvis only actually wrote one song in his career and co-wrote 2 more. He had contracts with legendary writers like Leiber and Stoller, Otis Blackwell etc to write his material. The Song "If I Can Dream" was written because Elvis was doing the 68 TV special and during the rehearsal Senator Robert Kennedy was shot in LA-Martin Luther King was shot in Memphis a couple of months earlier...and this had an effect upon Elvis.' He told his producer he would like and original song to end the special with that mirrored Martin Luther Kings iconic "I Have a Dream" speech..... so one of the musical directors, Earl Brown, went home and "overnight" wrote this song. Elvis learned it the next day and did 5 takes to get the ending of the special. The entire special from start to finish was shot over 4 days time (not a lot of time) it has live segments before an audience...productions numbers and the closing all in 4 days. Elvis lived at the Burbank lot for a week total before the actual start of taping he helped with pre-production to decide the format of the show. All done in 4 days taping, no autotune, no electronic gimmicks, no computer corrections. Elvis is mentioned in the top 3 artists whenever the question who sold most recorded units worldwide is asked.....you do not get there without talent, charisma and showmanship

This particular song was actually written by Walter Earl Brown specifically for Elvis. Mac Davis wrote a song called "In the Ghetto", originally intended for Sammy Davis Jr. who turned it down. Sammy suggested Elvis sing In the Ghetto, which he did and it was a big hit for Elvis.

Those who don’t appreciate The Colonel, overlook the fact he got contracts for Elvis, which were afforded to only the top echelon of artists from all time. The 50% publishing deals go back to the time of Al Jolson in the 1910s and only a handful were ever afforded them.

All common in that time, it was an era of great songwriters who often worked in teams. The artists that wrote some material on their own also did a lot of covers. The record companies had their own songwriters an provided the artists with songs to record. Managers making that kind of deals was also common. Lester Melrose, the man who became Arthur Crudups ( The composer of Elvis' first hit That's all right Mama) manager owned the co-rights to more than 3000 songs without writing a single song in his life.

The glitzy Elvis movie did not appeal to me. It portrayed more what had been said about his early career than what the reality was, and from the start a lot of crap and criticism was written about Elvis. Elvis and his music was about fun and positivity.

Great song and performance. However, the Elvis movie was very disappointing. Largely because Elvis is an impossible guy to recreate.

Exactly. Elvis carried any show by himself. No back up dancers . Pls stop talking to the end of the song. U are ruining the emotion of the song. U raddle on & on.

Putting Elvis in charge of speaking on narcotic abuse is like leaving Dracula in charge of the blood bank. Hypocrisy: What is an example of hypocrisy? People who tell you not to eat candy while they chomp away on candy all day.

I don't know what are you talking about. Get informed first before you make any comments. Elvis died of a heart attack not over dose and he was using a lot of medication for different medical conditions not just for fun. So, to me you sound as a very ignorant person

If you wanna hear Elvis really belt, check out this link for How Great Thou Art from December 1975. This is one of my favorites, he even re- does the end to put more into the BELT!! He actually won 3 Grammys for gospel music, 2 for different versions of this same song.

@@rong805 The reason I can't agree that all versions are good is that (1) the visual of the enhanced version is spectacular (2) the sound was improved (3) there is some amazing closeup footage of the backups. When video quality can make you feel like you are almost there, that's the cherry on the cake.

@@rong805 I replied awhile ago but looks like it disappeared. The version I refer to is live, which does make a difference, it has been enhanced so the visual is outstanding, the audio is fantastic, there is also great footage of his backups to see, & there's nothing like seeing him do this live & the expressions on his face.
