Big Momma Thornton. Otis Blackwell. There's a list of songs Elvis imitated & duplicated. He almost added "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton to the list but she didn't want to give up half the publishing.

Elvis is the most imitated singer on the planet, period!! He wasn't imitating Perkins. Perkins version is a hillbilly style while Presley's is a rock song. Presley's version far superior!! That's why his known for the song. Who gives a crap who wrote the song.

Elvis did a good cover of the song but personally I prefer the original and the Eddie Cochran cover better. Perkins. Cochran. Presley. Holly. In that order.

James Monroe you are in fact correct that carl Perkins wrote the song. Carl was supposed to be the one performing it in front of a live television audience but he got in a car accident so Elvis was sent in his place by the owner of sun records in Memphis Tennessee. Carl Perkins never forgave Elvis or the owner, Mr. Phelps, about this because if we’re him in Presley’s place he would have become famous. But instead he was accused of stealing a song that was already his. Elvis had a good voice and he was pretty, however, Carl was an arguably better musician and songwriter.

@@rachaelheap2981 Uh a little problem with that story: Elvis signed with RCA Records in November 1955. Elvis didn't record BSS until January 1956. Carl's version was already out. RCA wanted Elvis's version out but Elvis didn't. He didn't put his version out until September 1956. Carl's was the biggest hit of the two though these days it's more associated with Elvis, whose energetic version makes you forget Carl did it first.
