I’d like to hear him sing this song today as a much older and wiser man. To me he missed all the emotion and meaning of this melancholy song.

No, not really. Reg (Elton) had been hired to play and sing the songs in a way that would get pop artists to record the songs. These were not recorded for commercial release, but simply as music studio promotional demos. Warlock Music Publishing wanted to sell the songs to other artists for commercial recording. I think Reg interpreted the songs very much in the style of what he himself was recording at the time. His piano playing and voice are very similar to what he released on his album "Tumble weed Connection."

@@RonnieFriend A great info, ThanQ but all I meant is that Nick was so good but I said it in my way and maybe it sounded goofy but I meant no harm for Reg ( I admire him tho!)

Si Nick viviera y oyera esto, pediría morír otra vez...El único cover de Elton John muy bueno sobre Nick es "day is Done".

Sounds like a commercial version. Not being a hater but it just sounds so radio ready compared to nicks unique voice and style.

Yes, exactly. Reg Dwight was hired to record these songs for the record company, so they could try to sell them to commercial artists. These demo recordings were not made to be commercially released, but were used to promote the songs.

Good question. I don't know any more of the story, however. I just know that these were unreleased demos that somehow surfaced from the studios into the hands of collectors. I agree with you about Nick Drake, by the way. Very powerful, sensitive, deep recordings that he did - a shame he didn't do more. His own versions outshine young Elton's by far. But at the same time, as a obsessive collector and fan of Elton's music, I was incredibly delighted to hear these Nick Drake songs done in the style of Elton's "Tumbleweed Connection."

It just occurred to me that I have an old album that has a cover of "Sweet Honesty" that surely came about because of these Elton John promotional covers. She also included 2 early Elton John songs, before he was well known. Kate Taylor's "Sister Kate" album 1971. She is James Taylor's sister. I have the album on vinyl, purely because it has Elton John covers on it! But here's somebody's KZread upload..... kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGuipKecdLfWgNI.html

The song is great, Elton John a great singer and musician. The version is good. But all the shades of the Nick Cave's version are gone. Lot of respect for EJ, but original version is far far better.

what's strange is that his demo version for "Your Song" sounds way more whimsical and Nick Drake-y sounding than his Nick Drake cover songs. .
