You might have noticed too that land under cities is sinking because of water extraction. So there's a sort of double whammy effect. And you might have covered artesian and sub artesian wells. In UK this was on the school geography syllabus over fifty years ago. Sadly for us the boffins have been telling us about climate change as well as ... but what have we done ... quite right, sfa. Al Gore was and is correct, apart from the date and location. Suggest those who can migrate away from low lying coastal regions or buy a boat and develop an appetite for sea food. Sounds like you haven't been following the latest updates about their self driving vehicles. I don't care about Elon or Tesla, but their self driving tests have made a TON of progress in the last couple years. By next year, it'll almost certainly safely drive around any town, in nearly any weather. I think people need to quit underestimating the tech, it's ready and would save a lot of lives compared to human drivers.

No. It will not. It's a dumb pattern recognition algorithm. It will help us sift through mountains of data faster but that's it for a while.

Calculators cannot sift through mountains of data and compress them into a concise, concentrated, useful format through linguistic questioning as an input. One of his predictions was for 2029, 5 years from now. Something I've noticed in 30 years of following certain medical research is that anytime anyone says 'within 5 years' they're pulling that projection straight out of their backside. It's enough time for something to develop, but not so long it seems out of reach. It's a totally arbitrary figure, and once you become aware of it, you start noticing this old chestnut cropping up everywhere in science and technology.

If the bureaucrats and regulators had pushed the auto manufacturers to speed up their development of driverless vehicles and relaxed the restrictions slightly we would have had driverless cars a few years back. Tesla's technology has shown it is already safer than human drivers by quite a significant margin. That demo was really bad - it was slow and quite unresponsive and couldn't even handle voice. GPT, Copilot and Grok would have done a far better job.

Why are you asking people on the street? They aren't AI engineers or any experts that would have any clue as to the timeline? Also basic AI 101 - The AI used for driverless cars is completely different than the one used, say for ChatGPT. They are more or less containers of preset AI designed for those tasks. We only need someone to combine all of them into a system large enough to hold it all.
