The moment that we saw how he invested ALL his proceeds from Paypal and sank it into two industries which desperately needed reform for humanity but at the same time were death sentences in terms of expected return it was about as much proof as you can get that you are dealing with a different individual. These kind of billionaires would make a great advert for how Capitalism would work. Unfortunately not always the case.

Why does everyone try to compare Elon to Steve Jobs? Jobs was a master of design and marketing, and easily one of the most influential idealists to ever live. What people miss is that Elon is an engineer, inventor and industrialist. A more accurate comparison to Elon would be Henry Ford, James Watt or Benjamin Franklin. Good fictional comparisons could be Tony Stark (obviously) or Peter Weyland.

I think Elon admires Tesla. Tesla was a great inventor and innovator but not a good entrepreneur and salesman. Thomas Edison took credit for many ideas of other people, but he was able to sell those inventions and profit off those invention. So in that way Edison is more like Musk.

So far the things that Elon Musk have done have not affected the everyday lives of people, other than maybe Paypal. SpaceX and Tesla are both remarkable achievements and they might eventually trickle down to everyday life but Steve Jobs created things that affected everyone. Take iTunes, it completely disrupted the way we perceive music.
