Elly at her summit I could hear her at that time life in Amsterdam. For me she is the ideal Lied-singer

The definitive version, in my opinion, true perfection and a real understanding of the meaning of this beautiful song. Ameling's legato line just goes on and on, showing such great control. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sublime! The pianist also plays with such sensitivity...beautiful.

No single performance is ever "definitive." Have you heard Souzay's marvelous performance of this mélodie?

Absolutely, agree with dulcicanter. It's a shame for recording companies that very few of her recordings are available now, and young listeners can't hear one of the finest concert singers. Here in Japan, NHK TV is going broadcast Edith Mathis's 1986 recital tomorrow. I really wish they will do the same to Elly Ameling. She toured Japan almost every other year in 80's.

This is truly an exquisite interpretation of this immensely difficult and beautiful song. Elly never fails to reveal such sensitivity and musicality. Phrasing, breath-control, sense of flow and overall shape is perfectly appplied here. Such a joy to hear and of course wonderful rapport from the master accompanist, Dalton Baldwin. I recall her two appearances in Grahamstown South Africa around 1972-4 to be amongst the most memorable concerts ever.

This is one of the most beautiful of all the French chanson. Elly sings it as magnificently as any great interpreter of art song ever could. I would love to see a video of hummingbirds with her singing in the back ground. Absolutely wonderful!

Oh goodness. She did many wonderful recordings. She was Dutch, so look up the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Her voice was really that LAST, I think of lyricism. Tastes went wayward after that.

@@swarze Her old recording of Das Veilchen by Mozart, which I checked out on an LP from my public library as a grade school student decades before the Internet, was what got me hooked for life on Lieder repertoire. Imagine my surprise when I learned that her actual doctoral degree from the Rotterdam Conservatory was in French chanson, not the German stuff that has made her famous! I totally forgot that Le Colibri was by Ernest Chausson . . . pretty embarrassing, considering that Mons. Chausson has been my very favourite French composer since my earliest childhood.

Superbe ! Dommage que l'enregistrement (visiblement un 33t vu l'époque) soit déficient : il manque "bruit de" dans la phrase des bambous, le disque craque... Merci malgré tout d'avoir uploadé cette très belle version, par deux très grands artistes !
