You nailed that comment @NightEldar, many songs like this you want to remain quiet and low key, if it isn't broke, don't 'fix' it. The song stands on its own, just play and sing it as it was written as an homage to John Lennon, the starkness is part of the beauty, that is what such a beautiful piece deserves.

Gary Stephens I'm a huge Beatles fan.. But nothing compares to Elliott. I honestly whole heartedly believe Elliott was possibly the greatest songwriter who ever lived. Yes, better then Lennon. Elliott was so grossly overlooked, probably because most his music isn't instantly accessible. But he had it all - A prodigy, master guitarist and pianist. Well versed with many other instruments. The most emotion I've ever heard in a voice. The most poignant, heart wrenching lyrics ever written. And apart from the music, he was just such a lovable person. So smart, funny.. He made being awkward cool lol. He doesn't have the largest fanbase, but it is so so rare to hear someone say they hate Elliott Smith. I've never seen an artist on youtube with such a low dislike to like ratio. Not everyone gets it, but the ones who do, REALLY get it. Elliott was a genius swept under the rug. Maybe he and George are jammin somewhere in the cosmos :D

Guy got a freakin treat to play acoustic with Elliott and actually get him to play songs fully through haha. He was kind of bad with that at this point in his career due to his addiction. It's hard to tell if he's totally out of it or if it's meds, or if he really is just that shy and reserved. No one has mastered fingerpicking/strumming acoustic like Elliott. His ability to use a dozen plus chords, carry a bass line, a rhythm and a melody all on his own is unparalleled. His ability to put any finger on any string individually, in an up or down stroke, is wild. I've spent thousands of hours trying to learn to play some of his songs. Angeles being my most proud accomplishment.

I guess the reason why he didin't get as big as he deserved is the fact that to like him, first you've got to accept that life is ugly and pointless. Most people are afraid of coming up with this realization, and that's why Elliott never really hit the mainstream and will never do. His music points out life contradictions and gets you to call it into question. That's obviously not a bad thing, but somehow people just want to stick to the ideal meaning of life where everything is achieved with effort and life is always fair. Fuck no. Life isn't good all the time. And that's what Elliott's music is all about, at least for me. This is why a lot of people won't never like Elliott. They'll say that "his music is sad", when in fact, it's only about their fear of accepting that life isn't as good and happy as we are taught to think, that, indeed, life can get you all fucked up.

hot doge I agree with the "meaning" point. You've got to make it up for yourself. If you wait for it to come to you, you will fall into the dangerous trap of nihilism since meaning will never come by itself. However my point was that happiness or sadness themselves don't exist as a mood. You're never fully happy and never fully sad. It's normally a mix of both. All of us have concerns that feed the shadows of our life and other things that light it as well. And Elliott's music seems to meet that sort of contradictions that existence has in its nature. Of course you can find a meaning in life, but it won't remove the pain. The pain won't remove your meaning either. I think existence is way more complex than just being happy or sad, which is what we are taught as kids. The first mistake is to think that we can find a full state of happiness and leave all pain behind. And only when we realize the cold truth that pain tends to strike back, and that it's impossible to get to that ideal state of full happiness, it's when we feel disappointed with ourselves and fall into depression, because you know, we thought we had overcome pain forever and it was never going to come back. Because we think we can only be happy or sad at one given point in life. The sooner we assume that pain is likely to hit us in the future, the less afraid we will be of it and therefore the happier we'll get. It's like people can't assume that pain and happiness can walk hand in hand, because that's what existence is all about. If you don't assume it, and think 100% of happiness is possible, whenever a 10% of pain strikes back it will completely overshadow the remaining 90% of happiness. Life is all about contradictory emotions and Elliotts music sums it up pretty good. I know it sounds so easy to do, but putting it into practice and assuming or being tolerant with pain is probably the hardest thing to do on earth...

i don't think i'm imagining this -- at 1:52 when jon plays his fill it gives elliott the faintest hint of a smile -- i think he was pleasantly surprised by jon's musicality and genuinely enjoyed playing with him

after many rumours saying that this song was dedicated to Julian, Paul or one of his partners, John said that Jealous Guy was about him, talking about his insecurities and the way he treated himself. This makes me think about the similarities with Elliott and the way he probably identified himself with the lyrics written by his idol. Such an emotional, genuine and honest cover.

God, he was always such a lovable guy but as Jon Brion stated, something was clearly not right with him here. Apparently it was the last time he saw him before he all but disappeared for a few years.

Elliott's eyes look pinned. I mean, they always sort of did, but when he was at his worst (and sadly, there us footage of him at his worst) he would act befuddled. He is doing it just a smidge, here. Sadly, it was a foreshadow of the near future.
