A guy in Turkey, suicided himself through this song when drinking his last wine and smoke. He made a video just before his suicide and explained why he was doing it. He seemed like a good man in our opinion and for that I'm dedicating this song one more time to his brave soul. Rest In Peace Brother.

6 yıl olmuş. Neden Mehmet Pişkin bir ikon haline dönüştü diye düşündüm. Sanırım hepimizin aklımızdan geçenleri, dilimizin dönmeyeceği şeyleri anlattığı içindi. Ne zaman üzülsem, aklımda aynı düşünceler belirse bu adamın intihar notu, ona yazılmış olan Ölmezdim ve son dinlediği şarkı adresim oluyor. Garip bir şekilde yaşama daha çok bağlıyor bu beni. I can't even breathe when I'm watching this clip. It's just totally perfect in every way. Her voice was a musical instrument. Even the greatest of singers sound naff compared to Ella. Her voice was so unforced and pure, yet emotively dead-on. You don't have to scream and shout to express an emotion, Ella just lets her flawless tone do all the work. Ella Fitzgerald was a gift from God to the world.

This my all time favorite Ella song - so beautiful and sad it's almost painful, it just touches the soul - Ella is at the top of her game here - simply untouchable - an absolute treasure.

This is probably my all time Ella Favorite. Just tender and heartbreaking. I also like this orchestra version much more than the Cole Porter Songbook. This version is loosened up and lets Ella probe the lyrics to find even more meaning. Absolutely Fantastic. As far as I'm concerned, Ella is royalty; both for her musicianship and her humanity. She never believed that she was anything close to as great as she was. Love You Ella.

++Dennis Hartnett I actually prefer the Cole Porter Songbook version. I'm not saying that one of us is right, or wrong. I think I see what you mean about her being looser because she improvises and adds extra touches of embellishment, etc. However, for me the melody is so lovely that Ella's extra touches here do nothing to enhance it, in fact detract a wee bitty. In fact that is a fairly common issue with Jazz singers - how far can you stray from the melody without spoiling it and the way the lyrics tie in with the melody. For all Ella's instinct to improvise, I don'tthink I've heard her actually sacrifice the meaning and mood because of her improvising as some Jazz singers at times do. (I think Sarah Vaughan at times does just that when improvising. At the end of the day singers are not horn players.) I also find the strings here a bit too lush for my taste and prefer the other accompanying arrangement. Still, I did enjoy it even though I prefer the Sole Porter Songbook version.

Ella had an unexpected hit in Britain from the Cole Porter album with Every Time We Say Goodbye. At the London Palladium everybody wanted to hear this song and Ella, who often forgot the words (ref: How High the Moon on the Berlin album) struggled with this 'ordinary' song which had become a huge hit on the BBC request programme "Two-Way Family Favourites" which linked families in Britain and the many army personnel in Germany.
