The Smith Family bought the Ranch back in 1975 with its existing old craftsman-style house in a worn but functional state. It was not until 2014 that the Smiths embarked on a major and meticulous remodel and expansion of the house, transforming the structure into what could only be considered a living piece of art that preserved its historical integrity while incorporating modern functionality. Attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the house. Much of the redwood and fir used in the project were sourced and milled from the Smith’s timber holdings. In an era where the emphasis is put on the economic bottom line and not pride in craftsmanship, it’s a rarity to see the level of quality construction.
The house consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 baths with each room showcasing the different woods used to their true magnificence. The house is serviced by PG&E with a backup generator. Two wells provide the water. Besides the house, there is a stand-alone and sturdily built Workshop/ Garage. Opposite the house is also a tastefully done studio cabin. There is a consistent and harmonic theme between all the structures. One clearly sees the appropriateness of the structures to the environment.
Wildlife abounds on the Ranch, and from the perch above the meadow where the house is situated, one can take in this menagerie as if it is an ongoing play of nature that is ever-varying. Elk, blacktail deer, wild hogs, black bears, wild turkeys, valley and mountain quail, bobcats and mountain lions, and blue grouse all call this home.
There are ample useable acreage that could be developed for orchards, vineyards, and gardens. Livestock and horses would also thrive in this setting. The Elk Meadow Ranch is a canvas that is ready for its next steward to enjoy either as it is or to modify to suit their needs.
