Elizabeth Smart says she'll never ask "stupid questions" that fault abuse victims

Elizabeth Smart says she believes Wanda Barzee being released from prison is still a "danger." The now 30-year-old was abducted in 2002 by Brian David Mitchell and Barzee. They held Smart captive for nine months before they were captured and convicted. Barzee is set to be released from prison today. Only on "CBS This Morning," Smart spoke to Gayle King about Barzee's release.

You know these crimes that the perpetrators had committed ultimately aren't their fault, right? Violent crimes such as this are always committed because they were either abused themselves in some form or another. There's no such thing as free will. It sure is easier to think that someone's responsible for all of it, but that surely doesn't make us a better people. Before anyone starts jumping on me. I'm not defending rape. I'm simply suggesting that hating anyone isn't fair.

@@IAmHoTSHoTzz Yes you are defending rape, and it's disgusting. (If you don't want people to "jump on you" for your messed up comment, maybe consider not posting it.) A large part of the population (including myself) had a bad childhood or faced abuse growing up. Yet most of us don't turn around and rape someone or ruin someone else's life. There will always be some excuse to hurt another human, if you look for it. But anyone who criminally hurts or rapes another is completely at fault and should be punished accordingly. Also, until you've been raped yourself, don't tell rape victims that their "hateful feelings" are unfair.

It's about the fact that she still carries around the religious manifesto that Brian wrote to this day, fifteen years later. When Elizabeth wrote about how she was feeling about her last parole hearing that she accidently missed, Wanda's own daughter commented on Elizabeth's post and said something along the lines of that Elizabeth needs to stop speaking out about what happened because it happened so long ago and that Elizabeth wasn't the only one affected by the situation. The comment infuriated me. How can you go onto your mother's victim's social media account and tell her that she needs to stop speaking out about her experience and try to downplay her feelings about it. So I told her this, and she responded that I didn't know what her mother went through as a child. That sent me off the handle. Now you're justifying your mother's horrible actions against an innocent 14 year old girl due to her past experiences? Ugh. Wanda does not deserve to be released and I'm so scared for the public and their children now that she is out.

Wow that’s unbelievable, I feel for Wanda’s daughter in a way because she didn’t have a say in any of this and it wasn’t her fault that she was put in this kind of situation. However, you’d have to be a messed up person to justify the things that those people did to Elizabeth. Nobody in their right mind would ever try to make excuses for her mothers actions and on top of that go on the victim’s social media account and tell her (basically) to move on and to stop speaking out. Elizabeth is doing a good thing by still talking about this and her story is very inspiring. She’s helping many men women, and even herself and her family by continuing to speak out about this. Elizabeth is an incredible woman and I think it takes a very strong person to continue to speak about what happened. She has all of my respect 😊

I just wrote a comment before reading yours. I don’t agree with pardoning Wanda due to abuse experienced in the past but it is important to recognize the possibility that Wanda May have Ben repeatedly raped by who knows how many men. It is important to understand that abusive men like to abuse women and then use those same women to abuse other women to appear more innocent. Everyone will get caught up in the idea of a woman abusing a woman and be distracted from the fact that at the end of the day this man did the hard core abusing and did the raping and enjoyed it. We don’t have to choose between recognizing the abuse of one woman over the abuse of another. Maybe they were both victims of the same abuse. What happened to Elizabeth is unfortunately very common in a lot of societies in that women from the man’s family, after being programmed and abused themselves over many years will help him to abuse other women. It is important to see how many men use women to not only facilitate abuse but use them to take the majority of any public shaming that may Raul’s from it. I don’t know if the daughter of Wanda was asking you to want a lesser sentence for her mother or not but I think you should be less dismissive of her words regarding her claim that her mother Wanda was abused. You should look into that. Who abused Wanda ? How did they abuse her? When did they abuse Wanda ? Men rape because they want to. There is no manipulating them into doing it. The act is satisfying for them. Wanda on the other hand was not doing the raping and couldnt benefit from that act. What was motivating her so you think? Maybe she saw herself in Elizabeth being raped and became angry at her own childhood vulnerability and took her anger out on the victim, Elizabeth, like the rest of us do. Maybe, like the rest of us, she was trained to hurt and blame the victim in order to accommodate the agenda of male rapists

I remember vividly when Elizabeth was abducted, I had graduated High School that June and I can still see the People magazine cover with her smiling back. At 17 I was one of those people who asked STUPID questions, thinking if she was out walking with them across a street, why not run or scream? But it is incredibly unfair to ask that, and everyone experiences trauma in different ways, all that really matters is she is alive and healthy today.

    1) My heart breaks for Elizabeth. 2) Due process is what I love about this country and in this case it was the prison who miscalculated her release. Even if the lady begged to stay in prison until 2024 they would not allow her to just stay. 3) I do not think this woman is an imminent threat to anybody but herself and she will probably end up in a psych ward.
