For newer explorers who are just coming to the game, there was an important addition to the game that I assume came after this video was published. The Full Spectrum Scanner. This lovely scanner lets you do fairly robust planetary scans from anywhere in the system. This not only increases the value of your scans (though the DSS is still the best for value), but it gives you planetary maps within the system map without having to travel to a planet and perform a Detailed Surface Scan. So, if you're just looking for some funky planets to explore as Ant mentions later in the video, pop your FSS first and take a look around!

@@AksenowtCc You'll need a Detailed Surface Scanner, costs 250K. Doing a DSS on a world dramatically increases the value you get, but it's only really worth doing on water worlds, ammonia worlds and earth like worlds. You can get 1m per water world this way.

How to make your own road to riches: 1) Go to your star class map 2) Select stars that favor earthlike worlds; namely A, F, G, and maybe K if you cant plot a route using just the 3. (dont take this as earthlikes cant exist outside these classes, simply that the goldilocks zone for stars outside this range is too small, making earthlikes and other terraformables unlikely) 3) Add well paying stars; namely the bottom 3, Wolf-Rayet, White dwarf , and non-sequence. Also add stuff that will give you a good view if you care, like carbon and O 4) Apply filter to route 5) Find a nice end goal like Colonia or a nebula and plot route Unfortunately this method excludes ammonia worlds that favor colder stars, like M. But the vast majority of those stars only have useless balls of rock and ice so its not usually worth it. Enjoy the trip CMDRs o7

The thing is... Ive found several earth likes in neutron and black hole systems, but the systems always have other stars within the system that can host earth likes. So even if you have A, F, G, and K set to filters, theres plenty of opportunities to find earthlikes in any other system. You have to look to see what other stars are in the said system you're jumping to.

It's just rank progression and credits after all. So much of it is about the experience, the intangibles, seeing the galaxy from a completely different perspective. Oh and never leave the flight deck when exploring without appropriately shutting down all flight systems as you never know what you will crash into, even when theoretically nothing or no-one else should be there.

Why not include the ability to scan for RARE materials like Low Temp Diamonds in the void, I'd happily explore with my T9 kitted for Exploration AND Mining, The advantage of being able to mine LTD's in the void is that piracy should be non existent, but knowing F-Dev they'd make finding LTD's random, i.e. no scientific procedure and Pirate NPC's would magically appear in the middle of no where to steal the rocks.

@@denmanfite3156 Yes, it most definitely is more so than how exploration is portrayed in other games. I've looked to find Earth-likes and metal rich worlds, detail scan them and whatever other interesting/odd stellar system I came across. I also made a point of finding all the different star types available at that point at all stages of their development (i probably completed 75% of the matrix of stars available in game at that point). Learned a lot about stellar classification and their lifecycle in the process from external sources. What you probably got used to as "exploration" is in fact looting and is designed more towards the insta-gratification types (and hey, this can be done quite well and be experienced for enjoyment - not a problem when done right; when done wrong, it's only for the... intelectually challenged). And it already has a name that is more befitting: looting. E:D's concept is closer to what actual explorers would be doing: an expedition around the galaxy, mapping and data collection - still unrealistic for gamey purposes, but closer to what it should be all about.

@@OneBiteoftheCherry White dwarves have a pair of jet cones coming out of either end, and a massive exclusion zone (basically where your ship exits supercruise automatically and starts taking severe heat damage). You can use the jet cones to supercharge your ship's FSD to get a nice boost to how far you can travel on your next jump, but in order to get that charge you have to navigate around the exclusion zone without getting caught by it. And, as it so happens, the instant you jump into a system with a white dwarf as it's primary star you are put within seconds of the exclusion zone; either you pay attention and avoid it ASAP or you get roasted before you have time to get back to your controller (never go AFK when jumping!)

If you want to avoid issues with heat if you do crash into a star make sure you have heat sinks and materials to synthesise more, or use a really cold ship like a DBS or DBX, or engineer a ship to run very cold by using clean drives, low emission powerplants and no shields. Shields surprisingly generate a fair bit of heat. A fully engineered Diamondback Scout can run so cold, that it can scoop fuel AND have its FSD charging at the same time and still keep the heat under 70%. It also has an ambient temp in the single figures

Brilliant. I have been considering elite for awhile now and know that you can explore and I got that you had a jump drive, but how? Then you just lay it out there, almost casually, everything I've been wondering about and more. Thank you. Off to see what else you've got.

so a tip for the newer people watching this video in 2021: this vid is old so there have been changes that are listed below :- 1. the discovery scanner comes pre-fitted in all ships and has the infinite scan distance. To use this all you have to do is go to your firegroups and assign the dicovery scanner to whichever one you prefer. 2. there is also a full spectrum scanner that comes pre-fitted to any ship that you buy, similar to the discovery scanner. For the FSS (Full Spectrum Scanner) however, you need to add a keybind in order to use this. (i know its dumb) it has its own area in the settings which can be found under controls. 3. you still need to buy the detailed surface scanner. But the way to use it has been changed. you now need to fire things at a planet once you get near it. There are tutorials available on youtube that go more in depth on how to use these. EDIT: just wanted to add that im pretty sure you no longer take damage from using supercharged frameshift drives

The three tier stellar scanners are patched out as of 3.3 Beyond update. As exploration and mining got a "overhaul" in this update. New module that can help exploration/ survivability away from stations is the repair limpet controller for hull repair if ya smash your ship up on asteroids or planet surfaces.

Mr. Ant, I have recently decided to begin a trip to the Delta Quadrant, (Upper right hand corner of the galaxy), I'm currently about 1,000 ly from Sol but I've ran into a problem. I looked at my map and did the math and it said that it would be well over 600 jumps just to get to the border of the Delta Quadrant. I stopped my expedition for a while because I can't decide weather I should continue, or go back. By the way, I love your videos, they are very informative and entertaining! Your fellow commander, CMDR Tribble Kibble

I started my journey to the California Nebula which initially seemed like a massive undertaking. Shortly after messing about in the Nebula, asteroid base and moon base alike, I had set my sights for the Bubble Nebula. Like all things uncertain, I found myself making a quick course adjustment to the Heart and Soul Nebula...which is almost 3 times the distance from Sol to California. After adjusting my route to one less traveled, I was flooded with undiscovered systems that were lovely to explore and discover in turn for some credits. I’m currently now set to take off for the Bubble Nebula, of course after I spend some time in the beauty...the next course of action will be Sagittarius A. Be brave, be adventurous fellow explorers :)
