I have a whole house in stucco located in Arizona. Everyone just paints it every 7-10 years. I think skim coating it all would be awesome. I plan to look into Baby Fawn for my trim color. My roof is a terracotta color concrete tile. I want to highlight the roof not hide it.

Love German Schmear 27:40 especially over Brick. Love the look. To each her own. I saw a comment about loving limewashing. Its still creating a aged look as German Schmear does its just less expensive. Love the advice on painting trim.

This was very informative. Thank you. I have a brick home that I do want to lime wash. Not sure if that's the same as a German schmeer, but lime washing for certain color brickwork is stunning. Same for brick pathways. I come from a masonry city for hundreds of years. We see a lot of different colored brick. I think seeing different colors of brick would have be helpful, but likely not so common in the West, more so in the Midwest.

We lime washed our brick last year and it is not the same as German Schmeer. It is like a chalky paint look that allows the brick to breathe. German Schmeer is thicker and people usually just partially cover the brick allowing some still to show with that application. We used Romabio brand for the lime wash in their color Avorio White (softer white, more cream) and it turned out beautiful!!

Lime-washing brick is beautiful!! It is different than your German Shmear. Your city sounds absolutely charming!!:)

Great tips, y’all! We bought a 3-sided brick home a few years ago and my husband wanted to immediately paint it white. I told him, “heck no!” We have a beautiful brick color that’s timeless. Also, the great part about brick is that it is low maintenance! If we painted it, we would have to repaint it every 10 years or so. No bueno! Anyways, we made the best decision [for us] and he is now happy we didn’t touch it. 😊

This was so helpful even just to hear you using some of the language associated with exteriors! We recently bought a great home on a hillside in Virginia with gorgeous valley views. Unfortunately, the exterior is brown everything - siding, brick, shingles, trim, deck. We know we’ll do an exterior update eventually but I’ve been scratching my head over where to even start. It’s an 80’s contemporary style with some asymmetry, which is not my favourite, but I want to be true to what the house is while still updating it to be brighter, more welcoming, and reflective of us. This conversation got some wheels turning!

(Also totally open to any feedback you have about updating an 80’s contemporary home 😂 I find it funny that it has almost always been home styles I would never imagine myself living in that end up calling out to us)
