British trophy hunters killed thousands of elephants in Sri Lanka during the 19th century and the early 20th century. Major Thomas William Rogers alone reportedly hunted 2000 Elephants for sports. Over 50000 wild population was reduced to 1500 finally when the British colonizers left Sri Lanka back in 1948.

You should look up Chobe in Botswana and Hwange in Zimbabwe, divided by border, that's where the concentration is. Elephants everywhere!! They removed border fences to allow free movement of elephants in the region.

In northern part of Botswana they are everywhere. Their movement is not restricted to National parks or Game reserve. You could be walking to school or work in the morning and you will be walking past a herd of elephants

Still 7 thousand is a small number , given srilanka is tropical forest Island.

In Congo, we have the largest forest elephant population, a cousin of the savannah elephant. More than 7200 are counted in the biggest National Park. Now working in conservation, I can tell you that most elephants tend to move across a great distance, so it's likely that the country that shares borders has counted in their estimate an elephant moving back and forth. We have collared many elephants to track their movements, one of them spends most of its time in Gabon.

Еще больше удивляет, что их большое количество проживает в Намибии и Ботсване, где климат засушливый с пустынями и полупустынями. Значит там кормовой базы для слонов хватает. Больше должно быть того, что труднее воспроизводится. Беременность медведиц длится 190-200 суток и рождается 2-3 медвежонка. Беременность слоних длится 23 месяца и рождается 1 слонёнок!
