Electronic Dice Kit - The Learning Circuit

In the previous episode, Karen did an overview of integrated circuits or ICs. This week, Karen chose an electronics kit that contains two ICs, a phase locked loop, and a ripple binary counter.
A phase-locked loop takes one external input and one internal input, comparing the frequencies of their signal and turns that difference into a voltage that goes back to adjust the internal signal. This process continues until both external and internal signals are equal. This process generates an output signal that slowly changes then stabilizes. In today’s kit, an electronic dice kit, that signal from the phase-locked loop IC is used as the clock input signal of the second IC, the binary counter:bit.ly/2F3ZHQ1

    i am kinda confused on this, where does the reference signal comes from and what makes it feel random, from what i understood the purpose of the two ics in this setup is to make a gradual transition and visual countdown untill we reach the reference signal but where does the random part come from to make the whole system not run in circles

    It appears the variable reference voltage is determined by the charge found on the capacitor (C2 10µfd ) measured on pin 9 (VCO IN)of the PLL (phase-lock-loop) IC (IC1). Pressing the switch (SW1) starts the charging of C2 while the resistor (R1 100K Ω) is trying to discharge it slowly). Although this isn't a great random-character generator, it is a great circuit to learn about counters and PLL IC's. I'm sure someone could figure out how to manipulate the output by timing the press length. I feel the way the LED's are wired is very interesting. You will notice (00:45) that the top left LED is wired in series with the bottom right, and the top right is also wired in series with the bottom left. If one of these is lit then the other must be lit also. If these are the only ones lit then the output is 2. If the other corners are also lit then it means 4. If the center is the only one lit, then the output is 1. If either of the corners is also lit then it's 3 or 5. The two outer-row center LED's are also wired together and they are only lit when the output is 6. The transistor (T1) appears to be used to cause the outer LED's to flash rapidly during the time the VCO in the PLL is balancing the oscillators. All the output pulses are directed to the base through the diodes (D1, D2, and D3) It replicates the die rolling around before it settles out.

    If I understand this right, the CD4046 just provides a trigger frequency for the CD4024. The "dice" value then depends on how long you have pressed the button. Could you not accomplish the same with a 555 timer instead of the CD4046?

    You could, and there are similar dice kits using 555s that do just that.

    Curious how the "display" works - it can't be just a 1:1 binary display in a different physical layout. That would work up to 5, but there has to be some kind of logic going on to properly display the 6. There has to be two different ways to display the 2 digit in order to get 4+2 to display the 2's dots in the middle of the sides instead of on the diagonal on top of the 4's dots.

    @@Chris-rg6nm @Chris urquhart I did look at the diagram (thanks for the timestamp), and you're wrong. They're using the transistor as an "AND gate" that turns on the middle side dots when both the 4's bit and the 2's bit are high, just as I suggested. Only 3 bits are needed to count to 6 in binary, but in order to display it correctly as they are represented on the die the 2 bit *HAS* to be displayed differently for 6 than for 2. You don't have to worry about turning off the diagonal 2 dots because they are already lit up by the "4" bit, but you do need to turn on those middle side dots. Anyway, thanks to your nudging I do now understand exactly how the display part of the circuit works. 👍

    i built one like this, the explanation was really helpful, FRy-Electronics has them and cheap off Amazon dot com, i want to combine 2 in a box, and then 2 ppl can 'battle' eachother ! luv ur videos

    Once again a Video that explains the easy part and leaves out the explanation of the tricky bit. Where does The RANDOMness come from? What does the button do? Why does it even stop at some number? ...

    The randomness comes from the length you hold the button down: that causes a capacitor to charge up, and the time it takes to discharge determines the number that shows up.
