Electromagnetic suspension. All about the principles of its operation.

Ғылым және технология

Hi, everyone! Today on Subversion we will tell you about use of the electromagnetic energy in transport. From the very expensive and hard to build magnetic levitation trains (maglev) to personal automotive vehicles that you can use in your everyday life. Why is this technology not widely used in modern transport, although it was discovered long ago? Let`s talk about electromagnetic suspension and discuss the principles of its operation.

The BOSE system is very clever, no doubt. But have you ever heard of Citroens hydropneumatic system, introduced on B15H in 1954 and DS in 1955? Licenced to Rolls-Royce for the Silver Shadow and Mercedes-Benz S-class as an option for their versions of 5 litres and above. Which brands used the BOSE system in their manufactured cars?

We all have our preferenses about cars, the reasons for introducing new systems vary, economics, reliability in the long run, repairability, actual benefits and so on. In a situation when electric cars are being instroduced, the energy efficiency becomes more important as well as aerodynamics, recyclability and so on. Citroen has abandoned their fantastic system, probably due to cost, energy efficiency and the fact that a high pressure (90-140 atm) oil system will inevitably start to leak in the long run. It may also be a way to avoid criticism from environemntalist fanatics because of its oil contents. I will forever miss the best suspension system ever, as i am driving a Citroen C5 gen 3 with hydractive 3+. It works fantasticly well, and has done so since 2011. Before that i had 2 XM V6 with hydractive 1 and 2. But It needed some amount of power from the engine, and today range seems more important to customer.

RR, Bentley, and Citroen have all abandoned the hydropneumatic suspension, as it’s old technology. Most use air suspension, with RR specifically using an added rubber damper system for high-frequency vibrations. No production car has used this system as it was deemed “too heavy and expensive for commercial vehicles”. The only problem is, it makes things such as speed bumps obsolete, and cars can literally jump up curbs, etc... That’s the real reason I believe it was never used.

I agree that the Hydropneumatic systen was eventuellt downgraded on newer Citroen as a mean to löser complexity and thereby cost. A new oil, LDS replaced LHM and brakes were replaced with a cheaper Peugeot 508 system. But it was produced until 2015 when C5 mk 3 ended its produktion cycle, to the disappointment of many fans. As energy efficiency demands increased and electric cars became more common and sportiness became more popular than confort as a means to deal with Swedish "moose avoidance test" it have been fewer luxury suspension systems on the market. Citroen skipped automatic levelling for their cars, leaving just softer ride with a PHC system that is available with an active version. To some degree the have still kept oil as a suspension media. So, not abandoned, but simplifified for cost reduktion;-)

@@TheFakeNewsFrog I do believe that combination of factors contributed to the non acceptance of the suspension: the 2008 economic crises; the opposition and pressure by the cartel that dominated the industry that supply auto parts; and the weight and cost of the suspension, which could be solved fairly easy.

Electro magnetic suspension is common on many semi affordable cars but the BOSE system is FAR better. I mean it didnt even pitch half a inch.

Now this is good as well as bad, now miscreants will be unstoppable, no speed breakers will be able to stop them. Also chances of accidents will increase as there will be many speeding cars.
