It sounds like we’re getting the raw tone from the preamp or power amp section (I can’t remember where the sound comes from when you put headphones in an amp) but I’m sure with a cab IR or a physical guitar cabinet it sounds mean. It sounded fine in the clip from your egnator

Always start with knobs at 12 O'clock, then slowly start tweaking the way you want the sound to be

Personally I think it sounds like ass, but it did provide that "chainsaw tone" as advertised. If you are going after that tone of early Autopsy, Entombed, Mortician etc this pedal is right up your alley. The Thrasher pedal you demoed a while back was probably my favorite.

The trick to the HM-2 and all the pedals mimicking its tone is getting a little gain going on the amp (something between light breakup and ACDC-ish crunch), when you play them through a crystal clear sound they always sound really fuckin' weird and muffled which shamefully is the case here.

Nah, you just need a little gain from the amp, HM-2 style pedals sound fucking terrible if you play them through a clean sound (be it in the front through a clean channel or as you're suggesting through the FX loop return).

well, everybody have their own taste, but this pedal clearly goes specifically to a certain type of distortion, inspired in the Boss HM2 which was used and abused by Swedish and Finnish Death Metal bands of late 80s and 90s, a VERY influential metal scene back in the day. Its not easy to set and it doesnt sound the same with different amps.

Very Entombed sounding in certain parts. For those guys, at the time, it’s just what they had to work with more than it was a choice. And so that became the “the sound” out of the Swedish scene. The HM-2 really only does one sound, and that is fully dimed out. It’s got one trick unless you run in through a stack of other pedals and sound shaping like David Gilmour does and he could have probably ran anything at that point. Unless you can really appreciate and geek out on old school Swedish death metal, you probably wouldn’t get what this pedal is all about. The “is that thing broken?” type comments are cracking me up! I think EH did a heck of a job replicating it based on that alone!
